I like the A-10 warthogs, but I love the AC-130 "Spooky" gunships. They can linger over the target much longer and carry a lot more weaponry. During the Vietnam war A buddy of mine who was a gunner in the early versions of the AC-130s out of Thailand into Vietnam said they all wore steel boots because of the bullets coming up through the floorboards. The current Spookies can suppress ground fire so quickly and effectively that they were seldom fired at in Iraq or Afghanistan.
We are of a generation. I remember watching the Spookies operate, from a comfortable distance atop a Saigon hotel. There was a steady stream of light, even though only one bullet in 10 or 20 was a tracer.
