The real problem, Graham, is that a family cannot be sustained on a man's wage alone. I think many women would prefer to stay at home and look after the children but it's just not possible nowadays.
That is a United States problem. I could have easily supported my first family, but my wife was bound and determined to have a career. We traded a happy life in a 2000 sq ft house for misery in 5000 sq ft. with babysitters and housekeepers.
There are quite a few guys here in Ukraine working remotely to earn American salaries with third-world expense budgets. Bonuses are no prejudice - we are all white. Good schools. Good public transit. Health care that pretty much works.
Peachy addresses your question in her book, without IMHO answering it satisfactorily. I'm not sure there is an adequate answer if you are constrained to stay in America.
Cost of living can differ by factors of 10 depending on location. But the premise of feminism is fair - get women in the work force to force lower salaries. Few women will ever become CEOs because that's not the plan. Wonder if the executive pay ratio took off with the arrival of large numbers of women in the work force?
Seems in many businesses workers are being exploited but we accepted that. I know I turned down offers because they didn't agree about my value. OTOH, my skills had no geographic limitations.
We tried it for 4 years. My husband's salary covered our basic outgoings. But things break and need replacing. The car and the boiler broke and we landed in debt. We have a modest house and a modest lifestyle in a small town.
In my experience it's not possible for a family to live here on less than £40k ( median salary is £27k), and even that would be a stretch. To be comfortable (with second hand car, a holiday in the UK) you would need at least 50k.
To confirm my point, our family of five, plus in-laws, live comfortably on just about exactly £40k. We bicycle - no car. Public transport works. Utilities and services are cheap. Tuitions and child care are reasonable. The yield of our garden is bountiful.
The kids get summer vacations. My wife finds an excuse to go abroad for some conference or another every other year. As for me, I chose to build our house close to a very swimmable lake and river. Simply don't feel any need.
Graham. Thanks! Loved your review! ❤️ You got my curiosity piqued enough to read her other Amazon reviews. The best part is that I loved her “bio” particularly when she mentions her conversion to Catholicism. Her humorous wit is a precious asset.👇
Peachy Keenan is the pseudonym for a writer and mother living deep behind enemy lines. Peachy gave up a career writing for corporate behemoths so she could devote herself to her family, post on Twitter, and let her freak flag fly as a contributing editor and regular essayist for The American Mind, a publication of The Claremont Institute. A convert to Catholicism from secular nothingness and liberal feminism, Mrs. Keenan resides in Southern California, her ancestral homeland. She identifies as a husbosexual, which means she is only attracted to people who identify as her husband. She shares a home with her husband and children, who remain her toughest audience. You can find her on Twitter @keenanpeachy, at least until she is cancelled.
That's a nice review. I enjoy Peachy's substack.
