Far the best defense I think is to have a close relationship with my children and to talk honestly about things. I talk about my own experience with drugs, and my observations of what happened to my friends and family of the 1960s. Basically, the druggies had meaningless lives and are long dead.
I talk about their half siblings. The half-brother is totally lost – nobody has heard from him for several years as I understand it. The half-sisters are functional but doing nothing with their lives.
What will give meaning to my own children's lives? We make it clear that fulfillment will come with taking responsibility. Be good citizens, marry and raise children. We are fortunate to live in a society in which that is a viable model.
