Use of Chemical Weapons
In the past few days, there have been two reported incidents of the use of chemical weapons by Russia in the War in Ukraine, one is public information, and the other conveyed to me privately.
In both cases, the chemical was Chloropicrin. Chloropicrin is normally used as a soil fumigant, but it can also be used as a chemical weapon, with the objective of disabling a victim by damaging his/her lungs.
The Father-in-Law of a Ukrainian friend of mine is serving in a unit in the Kharkiv Region. A grenade containing Chloropicrin was dropped on their unit by a drone. Fortunately, the grenade failed to explode (photo attached).
Current Battlefield Situation
Both “Reporting From Ukraine” and the Latest Denys continue to believe that the current Ukrainian offensive in the portion of Kharkiv Oblast they don’t control still remains the top priority. They come to this conclusion from different directions. “Reporting From Ukraine” believes that Ukraine originally wanted to launch an offensive south toward Melitopol, but Russia was able to move forces from Kharkiv and Luhansk Regions to counter a Ukrainian build-up opposite Melitopol. However, as was the case back in early September Ukraine is exploiting the new Russian weakness by assaulting the critical Russian supply based in Lyman and trying to take back the portion of Luhansk Oblast that Ukraine controlled prior to the start of the war, including both Lysychansk and Svierodonetsk.
The Latest Denys goes into more detail about Ukraine’s effort to take both Lyman and other road and rail crossings in Luhansk Oblast that would severely limit Russia’s ability to supply Luhansk City. Denys also mentions that Putin has prohibited the desire of his generals to withdraw from the Right Bank of the Dnieper River around Kherson City, where 25,000 Russian soldiers are currently trapped. Stalingrad redux?
The 3 Giants
Recently, as part of the YES Conference in Kyiv, 3 giants of Ukrainian history appeared on the same panel discussion, Ann Applebaum as Moderator, along with Timothy Snyder and Serhii Plokhii, the 3 Giants, and joined by Niall Ferguson. It is worth watching. In the meantime, Prof. Snyder’s course at Yale, where Yale has been kind enough to post the lectures on YouTube has been getting thousands of auditors, including me.
