Izyum & the Kharkiv Region
As they were in Bucha, Irpin, and other towns, the war crimes and forensics investigators are back at work in newly liberated Izyym. They’ve already found 1 mass grave with approximately 440 dead bodies, many of whom bore evidence of torture and wanton murder. Bucha and Irpin ware occupied by Russians for only 1 months; Izyum and much of the rest of the newly liberated Kharkiv Region were occupied for 6 months. There are still occupied cities like Berdyansk, Melitopol and Kherson; estimates of the dead in Mariupol are up to 100,000.
Hromadske is an internet-based network that started in 2013, during Euromaidan. Hromadske was often the only source of TV news during Euromaidan. This is their recent report from Izyum. It lasts 22 minutes and it’s worth watching. In addition to all the assets that Ukraine has acquired through the courtesy of Russia’s Lend-Lease program, where Ukraine is getting ready to return the ammunition back to Russia, through this video it’s possible to meet some of the people that all the Western money and Western weapons, combined with Ukrainian leadership and courage, are helping to liberate. There are scenes, like the scene inside the small store which are familiar features even in the largest cities, that are familiar to anyone who has spent any time in Ukraine.
The Kharkiv Region is a place where most residents speak Russian. Between December 1919 and its fall to the Germans on October 24, 1941, Kharkiv was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. On February 22, 2014, the first place Yanukovich fled to, after departing his Mezhihirya residence at 4AM via helicopter, was to Kharkiv. In the Spring of 2014, when Russian “tourists” came to Kharkiv, it was assumed that Kharkiv would be lost to Ukraine because the Kremlin believed that population wanted to join Russia. This is what the Kremlin was evidently told by their intelligence services. Instead, it was the separatists who were repelled. Over the last 6+ months, Kharkiv and the surrounding region, has been gashed by Russian artillery, much of the surrounding Region temporarily occupied, and its people abused.
The Offensive Continues
This video describes Ukrainian operations east of the Oskil River and, especially a possible encirclement of Lyman. It was mentioned that Ukraine’s attacks are coming at the same time that Ukraine is moving some forces to the south, possibly for an attack toward Melitopol. Liberating Lyman will open the way to Lysychansk and Svierodonetsk, captured by Russia in late June and early July, an event that the pundits said would force Ukraine to the negotiating table.
The Latest Denys also describes the encirclement of Lyman, but from a different angle, namely the south, with Ukrainian forces crossing the Sviero Donetsk River. Denys also mentions Russian attacks in front of Donetsk City. It is hard to see what Russia is trying to accomplish with these attacks, given they dangers their forces face around Lyman, and the potential danger around Melitopol. Over the last 8+ years, Ukraine has built up several rings of defenses around Donetsk City. It is hard to see how the Russians can breach all 3.
I imagine that the City of Sloviansk carries some significance to both Ukraine and Russia. In the Spring of 2014, with the help of the collaborationist mayor, who was building a shoe collection that she hoped would eventually rival that of Imelda Marcos, Sloviansk was the first city to fall to the separatists. The following July 4th Sloviansk was re-taken by the re-constituted Ukrainian Army.
This brief video describes the destruction of the bridges in the Kherson Region, across the Dnieper and Inhulets Rivers. Ukraine has already trapped approximately 25,000 Russians on the Right Bank of the Dnieper River by destroying the bridges across the Dnieper. By destroying the bridges across the Inhulets River, Ukraine will divide the trapped Russians into two pockets.
