Kyiv Beauty Salons – Good Luck in Booking an Appointment
According to reports, the beauty salons in Kyiv are all booked up into January 2023. It seems as if there are a lot of people who are not reacting to Russian efforts at intimidation.
Washers/Dryers/Refrigerators
One of my relatives sent me this report – “Apparently, Russia is trying to secure chips by ordering large amounts of household appliances through third countries in order to scavenge the chips. Bloomberg reported that Armenia has imported more washing machines this year from the EU than it did in 2020 and 2021 combined. Kazakhstan has imported over $21 million worth of European refrigerators this year through August. Kazakh government data in turn shows a jump in refrigerators, washing machines, and even electric breast pumps being shipped into Russia. If Russia is using breast pump chips in its guided missiles, that might explain why they are so inaccurate! Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials also note that Russia is having problems procuring missiles from Iran, perhaps due to Iran’s concerns that they will be sanctioned further if they widen their help to Russia.”
Russians who looted Ukrainian houses of washing machines appeared to be acting under orders.
News From the Battlefield
The latest by “Reporting From Ukraine” provides an excellent analysis of the impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s electrical grid. This built on his previous post that is even more worrying. Here, he shows that Russia won’t be running out of missiles anytime soon, and they may be building up resources for another offensive in early 2023, at a time when Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is even more vulnerable.
It was noted that in the last barrage Ukraine shot down “only” 51 out of 70 missiles, a lower percentage that what Ukraine previously achieved. It’s possible that Russia is employing different tactics, allowing more missiles to get through Ukrainian defenses.
The posts talk about the possible breakdown of Ukraine’s energy grid, and Russia’s apparent strategy of spacing their attacks one or 2 weeks apart, so that they can damage or destroy rebuilt facilities. The posts also mentioned the possible break-up of the electrical grid, in a way that regions of Ukraine that have suffered less damage can supply other regions.
In my opinion the Biden Administration has no excuse for not agreeing to supply Ukraine with Patriot missiles which, had they been delivered when Ukraine asked for them, would’ve served to defend Ukraine’s critical infrastructure against ballistic missiles for which Ukraine has no defense. The excuse was that it would take too long to train Ukrainian operators. Maybe the U.S. was also concerned that Ukraine would be forced to surrender prior to the Patriots being delivered or, worse, Ukraine would surrender after they were delivered, allowing them to fall into Russian hands.
The same excuse, for likely the same reasons, was also given in the case of HIMARS, that it would take too long to train Ukrainian operators. Ukraine first requested HIMARS in early April, just after Ukraine routed Russia in the Battle of Kyiv. HIMARS were only delivered to Ukraine in late June. In fact, it took Ukrainians less than half the time to become proficient on the HIMARS than the U.S. expected. If Ukraine could’ve achieved the same level of proficiency was applied to Patriots, less than 50% of U.S. estimates. Ukrainian operators would’ve achieved the necessary proficiency late last Spring.
