Humanitarian Aid & The Importance of Ukraine’s Civil Society
This report covers the role of international humanitarian aid for Ukraine, primarily since the start of the War, and the importance of the role that Ukraine’s civil society groups have played in distributing the aid.
On Page 16 is a graph showing the international sources of humanitarian aid. On Page 11 is an illustration of the role Ukrainian civil society groups are playing in distributing the aid.
We have talked a lot about the significance of Ukraine’s civil society groups in Ukraine’s success on the battlefield. Ulana Suprun, who kindly provided this report, has been one of the reasons why Ukraine has achieved the success against the Russian invaders that it has had.
Ulana is a doctor, originally from Detroit, Michigan. Along with her husband, Marko, Ulana came to Ukraine in 2013. One of the early problems that Ukrainian servicemen faced in Donbas was death by blood loss. Ulana managed to get hold of NATO standard 1st Aid kits, and taught medics how to use them. The result was dramatically reduced casualties. In 2016, Suprun was appointed Acting Minister of Health by former President Petro Poroshenko. Someone once asked Suprun if she would like to be appointed the Minister of Health, dropping “Acting” her title. Her response was something like, “given what some of my predecessors accomplished during their tenures, I rather like the word ‘acting.’ “ In 2016, Suprun was awarded Ukrainian citizenship.
In these emails, we never tire from talking about the importance of Ukrainian civil society groups to Ukraine’s war effort and success. Unfortunately, because most people want news of the war itself, one of the reasons for Ukraine’s success in that war is not discussed enough.
