Effects of Russian Sanctions, by Timothy Ash

Timothy Ash is an expert on the finances of Ukraine, Turkey, and many other countries in E. Europe.   Over the years, Tim has been a great supporter of our emails.   This is an article he wrote on Substack about the future effects of sanctions on Russia.   It is the most informative analysis that I have seen on the subject.  

Tim’s prediction about commodity prices not staying high forever, now seems to be coming true.  Today’s price for crude oil, as quoted in the Wall Street Journal, is less than $96/bbl, down from its peak of $123.00/bbl last March 8th.    He also mentioned:

·       Impact of “self-sanctions” – Companies making decisions to pull out of Russia simply because they don’t want to have to make an argument, to customers, shareholders, lenders, and the public at large, as to why they continue to do business in Russia.

·       Market Losses – Tim believes Russian capital market losses since the start of the war amount to $200-300 billion.   There is also very limited ability for Russian companies to access international capital markets.   A small example – Russian companies are no longer able to issue audited financial statements prepared by “Big-4” accounting firms.  They have all pulled out of Russia.  

·       Medium-term effects – One example is the withdrawal from Russia of the big international oil service companies, Schlumberger, Baker-Hughes, and Halliburton.  Over time, producing wells will be degraded, especially in Eastern Siberia that is the source of exports to China.

The Fields Medal - Maryna Viazovska

The Fields Medal is given to mathematicians under 40 years-old, for groundbreaking work.   Maryna Viazovska, a Ukrainian and one of this year’s recipients, is only the 2nd woman ever to be awarded the Fields Medal.   Ukraine is going to win this war, not just because of the performance of its Army, but also because of talented Ukrainians like Maryna Viazovska.

Latest Denys

In addition to the upcoming Russian assault on Donetsk Oblast, especially Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, in his latest report Denys shows the increasing volume of Ukrainian artillery strikes on Russian assets in temporarily occupied Donbas, especially ammunition dumps, using the long-range artillery systems now arriving in Ukraine.   These attacks go directly against Russia’s major advantage – use of artillery.   Time will tell if this stops, slows, or reverses the Russian advance in Donbas.   In the meantime, Ukrainian forces are making advances in the South, as Denys shows on his tactical map.

Partisans

In this article, Alexander Motyl, a long-time commentator on Ukraine, lists the major partisan attacks that have taken place in Southern Ukraine since the start of the war.   We have been reporting extensively on partisan activity in Southern Ukraine, but the subject seems to have escaped the attention of the mainstream media.   The question is becoming whether we will start seeing partisan activity in temporarily occupied Donbas, including that portion of Donbas that has been occupied sine 2014.

Motyl also mentions likely activity by Ukrainian partisans inside Russia.  Previously, we have commented on activities of Ukrainian partisans inside Russia, including the work they’re doing with ethnic minorities throughout the Russian Empire, helping minorities resist Russian assaults against their customs and language, and in some cases resisting the Russian draft.

The “Defensive Crouch”

The term “Defensive Crouch” was coined by the late Benjamin Bradlee, when he was Editor-in-Chief of the Washington Post.   It was an award, presented to a reporter who missed a story, or even part of a story.   If Bradlee was alive today, he’d be busy passing out this award to several (but by no means all) members of the mainstream media for coverage of Ukraine, including:

·       Slavishly predicting that the war would only last 5 days.

·       Completely missing the level of competence of the Ukrainian Army.

·       Completely missing the level of rot in the Russian armed forces, in spite of the huge sums of money spent on “modernization.”

·       Slavishly focusing on Donbas, at the expense of ignoring the South.

A similar award, for government officials, could be given out to several members of the Biden Administration.

The Irish Times:  Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has come to Kyiv to express support for the Ukrainian people. The Prime Minister of Ireland already visited Borodyanka, which was destroyed by the Russians, in the Kyiv region.  In the second half of the day, he has several meetings scheduled, including with Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

CNN: Hungarian Foreign Minister - Hungary refused to participate in the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine in order not to endanger Hungarians living in Zakarpattia.

UK Secretary for Defense:  The first rotation of Ukrainian soldiers has recently arrived in the UK. According to him, up to 10,000 Ukrainian recruits will undertake courses based on the UK’s basic soldier training. Soon, instructors and equipment from other countries can join the training program as part of its scaling.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Ramin Toloui says that the G20 countries should hold Russia accountable and insist that it support the ongoing efforts of the UN to reopen the shipping routes for grain delivery.  ”We would like the G-20 to hold Russia accountable and insist that it support this initiative,” he says.

Blinken heads to Asia today for a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Bali on Friday. His trip will include his first meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Y.  Analysts foresee a contentious G20 ministerial in which Washington and its allies blame Moscow for global food shortages.

Press service of the Kalinoŭski regiment:  During the battle with the Russians in the Lysychansk area, the battalion commander of the regiment named after Kastuś Kalinoŭski of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the call sign "Brest" was killed. Several more Belarusian volunteers were captured.

Reuters:  Finland seizes more than 800 Russian freight trucks.  Finland had frozen the assets of several dozen Russian and Belarusian individuals and entities, including transport companies, worth at least 82 million euros.

The State Duma of the Russian Federation in the first reading adopted a bill that prohibits holding rallies on the territory of railway stations, airports, schools, hospitals, children's and sports grounds and public authorities.

BBC:  The authorities of Belarus announced the freezing foreign owned blocks of shares in 190 Belarusian companies in response to Western sanctions.  "In order to protect the interests of the Republic of Belarus, the shares are blocked on the deposit accounts of their owners according to the list on the basis of the order of the Ministry of Finance to restrict the circulation of securities," according to the website of the Belarusian National Legal Internet Portal.

France Presse:  Deputy Secretary General of NATO - The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO does not imply the automatic deployment of alliance bases on their territory, such plans are not currently being considered.

Bild: The German security authorities officially say there are about 200 Russian secret agents operating in Germany. But the total number of Putin's spies in this country is probably much higher.

Washington Post:  Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl left the country due to death threats.  In May, Kneissl left her post on the board of directors of the Russian company Rosneft, where she got a job two years after her resignation from the post of head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry.    When she was Foreign Minister, Kneissl invited Putin to her wedding, where she danced the waltz with Putin, and then curtsied while Putin kissed her hand.

BNS: The Defense Ministry of Latvia will offer to introduce universal military service in the country. The current system has exhausted itself.

Local media:  The body of the director of a sub-contractor company to 'Gazprom', Yurii Voronov, was found in the pool of an elite village near Vyborg.  He died from a gunshot to the head. This is the fifth death in six months associated with the Russian gas industry.

Yle: Russia withdrew military equipment from its military base near the border with Finland. Since mid-May, more than 100 pieces of equipment have been removed. This means that at least a third or even almost half of the approximately 2,000 soldiers left the base at the same time.  It is assumed that equipment and soldiers will be transferred to Ukraine.

Russian cosmonauts unfurled the flag of the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic" at the International Space Station.  This angered former NASA astronauts who used to work on the ISS. Also, the speaker of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleh Nikolaienko says that Ukraine demands to exclude the Russian Federation from all international space programs.

Press service of the British government:  The UK will transfer 10 more self-propelled artillery mounts to Ukraine soon and will supply loitering ammunition.

Yum! Brands (KFC and Pizza Hut brands) announces negotiations on sale of Russian KFC restaurants to a local operator, after that it will completely leave Russia.

Minister of Foreign Trade and Cooperation:  The Netherlands allocated an additional 200 million euros in aid to Ukraine. This was reported at Lugano. The money will go to the salaries of civil servants, teachers, and doctors.

The Jerusalem Post:  Russia demanded that the Jewish Agency (Sohnut) cease its activities in the country.  The Jerusalem Post notes that the order was issued amid growing tensions between Israel and Russia over Jerusalem's stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Türkiye:  Negotiations on the unblocking of ports are currently taking place in a bilateral Ukraine.  At the same time, the four-party format with the participation of Russia will be formed after Ukraine agrees with its partners, in particular, on security issues and "red lines".*

●        Hurriyet:  Negotiations on the export of grain from Ukraine will intensify in the coming days. Turkey will initiate this process, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.At the same time, the president expects that success in negotiations on organizing the export of grain from Ukraine by sea will be achieved in the next 7-10 days.

Yomiuri: President of China Xi Jinping declined President Vladimir Putin's invitation to visit Russia due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

RNZ:  New Zealand will ban the import of Russian gold.  The country's Foreign Ministry said that the decision guarantees that New Zealand will not become a safe haven for Russian gold assets.

Novinite: Russia has stopped issuing tourist visas to Bulgarian citizens in response to the expulsion of 70 of its diplomats from the country last week.

Ministry of Tourism:  The Government of Australia has announced the cancellation of import duties from Ukraine. "The cancellation of tariffs on imports to Australia from Ukraine is a key part of the ongoing efforts of the Australian government to further deepen our bilateral trade and investment relations,"

Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Lugano: The Czech Republic will participate in operations to clear Ukrainian agricultural lands.  We intend to contribute to the demining of agricultural lands and areas with critical civil infrastructure.

Vytalyi Klytschko handed over 1,200 bulletproof vests to the soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine.  "We are doing everything possible to help our defenders at the front," - Klytschko said. According to him, Kyiv has already handed over more than 10,000 pieces of body armor and 5,000 helmets to Ukrainian defenders.

Secretary of the National Security Service:  Around a million Ukrainians either fight or are trained in it.  According to him, about the same number of Ukrainians receive combat and military experience. Is "Putin's plan" going according to schedule? "Ukrainian quality will definitely outweigh Russian quantity.

State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine initiated the dismissal of the deputy head of Kharkiv Regional Council.  According to operational information, he has a Russian passport, obtained in 2014 in Sevastopol, a driver’s license, and a tax number which is needed for the payment of taxes in Russia.

In the last two weeks, international partners have increased the financing of the state budget of Ukraine by 46% or 101.8 billion UAH.  The total amount of foreign financing for the state budget from February 24 to July 5 amounted to 322.5 billion UAH.

Office of the President of Ukraine:  The large oil development project in the Arctic "Vostok Oil" of the Russian "Rosneft" stopped due to sanctions. Investors estimated it at 70 billion euros.

Press center of the Defense Forces:  Russia again tried to strike Zmiinnyi Island. Also, the Russians were conducting reconnaissance to prevent the installation of the Ukrainian flag on Zmiinnyi Island.

Opendatabot, reports:  IT services became the only business sector that grew in 2022 compared to 2021. It grew by 27%: for 5 months of this year, the share of IT in all services exports was 46% compared to 37% a year earlier.

British Intelligence:  Russia has transferred to the Izium direction most of the remaining parts of the Eastern and Western groups of troops and continues the offensive on Sloviansk

●        With the town also under threat from the Central and Southern Groups of Forces, there is a realistic possibility that the battle for Sloviansk will be the next key contest in the struggle for the Donbas.

Institute for the Study of War: Russia’s stated objectives in its invasion of Ukraine remain regime change in Kyiv and the truncation of the sovereignty of the Ukrainian state

●         Russian authorities are conducting escalated conscription measures in occupied territories to compensate for continuing manpower losses.

●        Russian authorities are continuing to consolidate administrative control of occupied areas of Ukraine, likely to set conditions for the direct annexation of these territories to the Russian Federation.

Operational report of the General Staff of the AFU 7:33 AM:

●        In the Kharkiv direction, Russia is engaged in defensive actions. Shots were fired from helicopters, tanks, mortars, and barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of Sosnivka, Slatyne, Mala Danylivka, Cherkaski Tyshky, Vesele, Kutuzivka, Mospanove, Husarivka, Chepil, and Nova Mykolaivka.   Russian soldiers remotely mined the area near Shestakove and Pobieda.

●        In the Sloviansk direction, the Russian Army has fired mortars, barrel, and rocket artillery near Krasnopillia and Bohorodychne. Armed Forces of Ukraine have repelled the assault and drove the Russians back to the area of Dolyna. Russia is conducting assault operations near Mazanivka. Fighting continues.

●        In the Kramatorsk direction, Russia has shelled civilian infrastructure in the districts of Sieversk and Hryhorivka. Ukrainian troops inflicted significant losses on the Russians when they attempted to attack the areas of Verkhnokamianske, Bilohorivka, and Hryhorivka. The Russians have withdrawn.

●        In the Bakhmut direction, the Russian troops launched an airstrike in the area of the Vuhlehirska thermal power plant. Russians carried out assaulting operations in Novoluhanske, but without success. They withdrew. Ukrainian soldiers stopped the Russian offensive in the area of Spirne and repelled the attack near the Vershyna. Russia is trying to regroup. Russian troops are advancing in the area of Luhanske. The fighting continues.

●        Over the past 24 hours, bombers and stormtroopers of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed two ammunition depots, two platoon strongholds of Russians, and more than ten units of Russian equipment. Casualties are being specified.

Maritime:  In the port of Constanta (Romania), the processing of Ukrainian grain cargoes for export has begun using a new method without berthing, which will dramatically increase the capacity and the processed cargo flow. 

Facebook:  Since the end of June, the Red Cross branch has been issuing gift cards to refugees from Ukraine in Poland to buy goods in one of the chain stores.  Cards in the amount of 100 zlotys are issued to citizens of Ukraine who arrived in Poland after February 24. They give the right to buy clothes, household goods and interior items in KiK stores. To apply for a card, you need to personally appear at the nearest regional branch of the Red Cross.

Operational command Pivden (South):  Russia has aimed 40 cruise missiles at the mainland. Now in the Black Sea there are 4 surface ships and 2 submarines with a total salvo of 40 cruise missiles. Yesterday, the Russians launched 3 carriers into the sea with a total salvo of up to 20 cruise missiles.

On July 5, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine eliminated two field trains of ammunition, two platoon strongholds of Russian soldiers, and up to twenty pieces of equipment.

US President Joe Biden congratulated the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine on its 30th anniversary, noting that its work helps Ukrainians in their struggle for freedom.

Mykhailo Fedorov awarded Microsoft with the "Distinction of the World."  The award was presented during a meeting with Microsoft representatives in Lugano.  World Distinction is an award founded by President Zelenskyi for the companies, governments and world politicians who are most supportive of Ukraine. Previously, this award was given to Google.

President’s Office:  Russian troops took Novoluganskoye in the Donetsk region (west of Svetlodarsk and south of Bakhmut). The Russian army has peaked, they threw all their strength into Lysychansk and Severodonetsk and ran out of steam.

Center for National Resistance:  Russians are preparing for mobilization in the southern regions of Ukraine. The Russian Federation began preparations for conscription in Berdiansk, where the leaders of condominiums were instructed to provide lists of residents of houses of military age.

Cabinet of Ministers:  Ukraine applied for entry into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.  According to the head of government, this happened during a discussion on the practical implementation of the Ukraine Recovery Plan at a conference in Lugano (Switzerland).

The International Committee of the Red Cross is in contact with the prisoners of war defenders of 'Azovstal' and controls the conditions of their detention, – the speaker of the ICRC in Ukraine Oleksandr Vlasenko says.  According to him, information about visits to prisoners is confidential. Vlasenko explained that any leak of information could affect the work of the Red Cross.

Operational summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine 6:40 PM:

●        The threat of missile and air strikes from the territory of Belarus continues to persist. According to available information, the control and warning system is being tested in the armed forces of this country.

●        In the Kharkiv direction, the Russian troops are defending on previously captured lines. The Russians conducted assault operations near Sosnivka, but failed and retreated. An air strike was carried out in the Kharkiv area.

●        In the Sloviansk direction, the enemy is trying to improve the tactical position of his units.

●        The Ukrainian soldiers successfully repulsed the enemy assault actions in the Krasnopillia district.

●        In the Donetsk direction, the main efforts of the enemy are concentrated on taking control of the Bakhmut-Lysychansk road and trying to capture the settlement of Bilohorivka.

●        In the Bakhmut direction, with the support of artillery and operational-tactical aviation, the Russians conducted assault operations in the areas of the settlements of Spirne and Vershyna, the fighting continues.

As of June 4th, the UN has confirmed 4,889 civilian deaths and 6,263 injuries in Ukraine because of a full-scale Russian invasion.   This number can be added to the over 13,000 deaths, between the start of the war in 2014, and last February 24th.

Ministry of Internal Affairs: Details of the law on the legalization of weapons for Ukrainians. Citizens of Ukraine will be able to obtain weapons only under the following conditions:

●        a certificate that the person is mentally balanced and has no bad habits;

●        a certificate that the person has the right by law to have a weapon and has not been previously convicted;

●        entering information into the electronic database so that it is not possible to buy certificates and permits;

●        control by the authorities, with the possibility of checking - in what conditions the weapons are stored.

Deputy Defense Minister:  Russia planned an encirclement in Lysychansk, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not allow this; explaining the reasons for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the city.

Ministry of Reintegration:  In June, Ukraine returned 44 children whom the Russians had illegally taken to Russia and the temporarily occupied territories.

Ministry of Infrastructure:  The plan for the restoration of Ukraine provides for the repair and construction of 51.2 thousand km of roads and 1.4 thousand bridges.  It is also planned to purchase, repair and modernize more than 7 thousand units of railway rolling stock; reconstruction/construction of five new airports; modernization of three ports on the Danube.

Prosecutor General:  Ukraine has arrested Russian assets worth UAH 33 billion (about $1.12 billion).  The property of the citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus is naturally estimated at tens (if not hundreds) of billions of hryvnias. Our task is to identify, see the connections, prevent the replacement of owners, and arrest.

At the initiative of the SSU, the assets of a Ukrainian enterprise and a bank that sponsored the aggression of the Russian Federation were arrested.  In general, the estimated value of the property of both legal entities arrested by the court is almost  880 million UAH, and corporate rights - more than  1.2 billionUAH.

Office of the President:  The loss of the Russian army since the beginning of a full-scale war is up to 115,000 killed and wounded.  Russian army units lost 36,000 people, and private military companies - up to 12,000. Everyone else is injured.

Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs: More than 5,500 women from the Ministry of Internal Affairs are now fighting on the battlefield in Ukraine.  Unfortunately, there are 25 women from the Ministry of Internal Affairs who died during the defense of Ukraine. We also have information about those women who have gone missing, those who are in captivity, so the picture of losses may not be complete.

Minister of Infrastructure:  Ukraine exports about 30% of the pre-war volume of agricultural production. Export supplies go by highways, railways and through ports on the Danube. It is possible to significantly increase the volume of supplies only after unblocking the Black Sea trade routes.

Office of the President:  As of today, 1,028 settlements have already been deoccupied. 434 settlements have already been demined. In 651, the National Police resumed its work. In 691, local self-government bodies started working.

Yesterday Ukraine’s news networks and social media were preoccupied by a letter issued by Ukraine’s Commander of the Armed Forces.  His letter stated that men of military service age could not move freely around the country without permission of the military.  His statement was based on the 1992 Law of Ukraine "On military duty and military service".  His statement was immediately denied by human rights organizations, other government agencies and active military commanders.  This led to clarifications which in turn generated further criticism, and further clarifications.  By the end of the day Ukraine’s president pre-empted further discussion and issued a draft law removing the restrictions of the 1992 law.

OUR OPINION IS THAT FURTHER DISCUSSION AND RESOLUTION OF THE ISSUE THROUGH PARLIAMENT WOULD BE THE WAY A FUNCTIONING DEMOCRACY SOLVES THIS TYPE OF ISSUE.

The representative of the General Staff Oleksandr Khlys confirms the information that the Ministry of Defense plans to use the 'Diia' application for military registration.

In Kherson, Donetsk, Melitopol, Luhansk and Berdiansk, postcards with the appeal "Stop Referendum" began to appear. Photos from subscribers.

Schemes:  The Russian Federation is systematically exporting Ukrainian grain to Türkiye through Crimea.  Journalists of the project published the results of the investigation, in which they note that Russian soldiers systematically take Ukrainian grain from the occupied Crimea, in particular, to Türkiye ports.  Grain is loaded in the port of ""Avlita"" (Sevastopol), where it is brought from temporarily occupied territories, in particular, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense:  The defenders of "Azovstal" released from captivity receive all the necessary medical care.

British Intelligence 12:25 PM

●        Russian troops, if requested, will seize the entire Donetsk region, and they will continue to raze cities to the ground with the help of artillery. 

●        The British noted that after the capture of Lysychansk, the Russians will be able to expand their control over almost the entire territory of the Luhansk region.

●        Unlike in previous phases of the war, Russia has probably achieved reasonably effective coordination between at least two Groupings of Forces, the Central Grouping likely commanded by General-Colonel Alexandr Lapin and the Southern Grouping probably under the recently appointed General Sergei Surovikin.

●        Ukrainian forces have likely largely withdrawn in good order, in line with existing plans. The Ukrainian held areas of Severodonetsk-Luhansk consisted of a bulge or salient which Russian could attack from three sides. There is a realistic possibility that Ukrainian forces will now be able to fall back to a more readily defendable, straightened front line.

Sky News:  Neil Melvin from the analytical center of the Royal Joint Institute of Armed Forces (Great Britain) said that the decisive battle for Ukraine will most likely take place in the south, where Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive to win back territory

●        Melvin also emphasized that there was a "tactical victory" in Russia's Luhansk region, which brought the Kremlin troops a small strategic benefit. But the key battle is "still ahead", according to the military expert.

Regional Military Administration:  From 8 am on the Novoslobodskaya community there were 10 parishes hit by mortars. 2 households were damaged, windows and power lines were broken. Also, from 8 in the morning there were 7 mortar arrivals in the Belopolskaya community.

●        During the day, shelling from small arms and mortars of the Krasnopol community began. The warehouse of mineral fertilizers was damaged

●        Shalygin community - 3 arrivals at noon, 15 mortar arrivals at three o'clock in the afternoon.

●        Almost at eight in the evening, drones dropped explosives over the Shalygin community. At half past five, 4 mines flew over  Seredyno-Budskaya territorial community.

Regional Military Administration:  During the night, the Russians launched missile strikes against the Novobavarskyi, Kyivskyi, and Osnovianskyi districts of Kharkiv.

●        At 1 a.m., the Russians hit the Osnovianskyi district.

Prosecutor's office:  As a result of Russian shelling of the village of Pechenegy, Chuguev district, on July 5, a small child and an elderly man were injured.

Regional Military Administration:  The lack of air defense around Kharkiv is a myth.  He made it clear that some of the missiles that fly at the city knock down air defenses. Simply, according to him, no one knows how many missiles actually fly to Kharkiv.

The SSU detained a spotter for Russian artillery shelling in the Kharkiv region.  Law enforcement officials established that a 41-year-old resident of Kharkiv collected and passed on information to the Russian army about the location of the units of the Armed Forces and other formations, the coordinates of military equipment and fortifications erected in the region.

According to social media, the front-line city of Toretsk in the Donetsk region was shelled from artillery tonight. The school building and apartment buildings were damaged.

Mayor of Slavyansk:  Called on local residents to immediately evacuate the front-line city.

Mayor of Mykolaiv about the morning shelling of the city:  "More than 200 windows in 7 high-rise buildings were broken by the blast wave and debris, the entrance door was damaged in the entrances, in some apartments people had to cut the locks to get out of the house. Operational command Pivden 'South':  The Russians launched three X-59 missiles from the air on the infrastructure of Ochakiv and Chornomorsk at noon. According to the OC, all Russian missiles were shot down by air defense forces.

Regional Military Administration:  There will still be no opening of beaches in Odesa this season.  The decision was made jointly with the city authorities and was due to security requirements, including because of the mines that wash ashore.

●        Now there are no signs of preparations for a full-fledged operation to seize the Odesa region.  There is a lack of resources and capabilities in the Russian army along the entire southern front line.

Mayor of Khmelnytskyi:  Confirms that missiles arrived in the region.

Regional Military Administration:  As of 20:30, we know about 3 arrivals of missiles in the Khmelnitsky region.  As a result of the Russian missile attack on the territory of the Yarmolinetskyi territorial community of the Khmelnytskyi region, one person was injured, there were no deaths.    The Khmelnytskyi Region is located approximately 350km southwest of Kyiv.  Khmelnytskyi has been relatively untouched by Russian missile strikes.   It is likely that the missiles were launched from Belarus air space, because to get to Khmelnytskiy from the Black Sea, the missiles would almost certainly have to fly over Moldova, a non-combatant, and/or Romania, a NATO Member.   It is the location of Kamianets-Podilskyi, probably the most well-known medieval castles in Ukraine, and the site of one of the several mass-murders of Jews by the Germans during WW-II, similar to the mass murders carried out at Lutsk Castle and Babi Yar.   At Kamianets-Podilskyi, the murders were carried out on August 12 & 28, 1941.  Approximately 23, 000 were murdered.
