The Latest Lawrence Freedman
Freedman’s latest Substack blog covers the Ukrainian attacks on Russian troop concentrations not only in Makiivka, but he is careful to add 2 additional strikes in Kherson Oblast, and a recent strike near Tokmak, located along the route of a possible Ukrainian counterattack toward Melitopol. He also covers the Bakhmut Meatgrinder and murky political situation in the Kremlin.
In the case of Bakhmut, and most recently Russian activity around Soledar, approximately 10km. north of Bakhmut, it’s important to pay attention to the fighting to the north, around Kremina and Svatove. As mentioned previously, both Svatove and Kremina sit astride Russia’s main re-supply route over which they re-supply their troops trying to take Bakhmut. Ukraine is very close to taking Kremina, 5km according to the most recent information I’ve seen. The current colder weather in the area will harden the ground and may facilitate the movement of Ukrainian armor. Svatove and Kremina may also leave the rest of Luhansk Oblast vulnerable.
Below is Freedman’s conclusion (my underlining) - “Ukrainian forces have been improving their positions on the Svatove-Kreminna line, but it remains to be seen if they can make a major breakthrough which leads to a further retreat and even a rout of Russian forces. As I have noted before just because there has been little change in the front lines one should not assume that the two sides are locked in a perpetual stalemate, just as one should not assume that rapid advances can continue without a need to stop and consolidate in the face of new resistance.”
“Ukraine has the advantage, which should grow, in its ability to hit vital targets with accuracy and to manoeuvre, which it wishes to use to avoid gruelling attritional battles such as Bakhmut. Those are the only sort of battles Russia seems able to fight. It is stuck with a form of warfare that depends on artillery barrages and indifference to casualties which limits its options and requires continuing supplies of shells and men.”
“When we step back from the daily news the underlying trends of this war favour Ukraine. It is learning to cope with the repeated Russian attacks on its critical infrastructure, and once spring comes the impact will decline, while it has been getting bolder in its attacks on facilities on Russian territory. The energy shock has not turned the West away from supporting Ukraine and instead they are offering support for future land offensives. Here lies the biggest danger for Putin - more retreats rather than more casualties - and a developing aura of futility. The question of what it takes to get Russia to abandon its war of conquest remains unanswered but that does not mean that no answer will ever be found.”
News From the Battlefield
Interestingly, “Reporting From Ukraine” and “The Latest Denys” have differing views on the consequences of recent Russian advances near Soledar, around 10km north of Bakhmut. Look at the Latest Denys first, and then “Reporting From Ukraine.”
Both the Latest Denys and information from my colleague (below) have the details on the latest arms transfers from the United States and European allies, primarily France and Germany. At the beginning of Russia’s latest invasion, the United States characterized its military support to Ukraine as improving Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. Supplies consisted primarily of anti-tank and light antiaircraft weapons.
No longer. The latest delivery appears to support and improve Ukraine’s capability to launch offensive operations. During the liberation of Kherson, Ukraine made excellent use of older armored personnel carriers that gave them an advantage of maneuverability. The latest delivery includes 50 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, including a larger gun and a “TOW” anti-tank missile launcher. Germany and France are supplying similar weapons. These are clearly intended to support offensive operations.

From far away Japan, it is correct to think that the Soviet or Russian upper echelons are cunning, do not tell the truth, everything they say is a lie, and they do not keep their promises 100%. The US may be similar, but the US is still better. If Putin wants the DPR and LPR, he will get the OK if he distributes $1 million to every Ukrainian individual.
Trying to rob it with a gun is what a stingy gang does. Gangs and Mafia are limited to getting rid of them quickly.
Doesn't anyone offer a bounty?
Just the mere phrase "...abandon its war of conquest..." is enough to make me abandon your dissertation. At this late stage it certainly does not look like a war of conquest. Nothing like it. Even the physical fact of where the fighting takes place testifies to that: it is on Donbas Oblast land. DPR and LPR are trying to get Kiev off their land. It is they who are fighting against a 'war of conquest'.
Then there is the question of peace and the saving of lives. Nowhere in your dissertation do you even make oblique reference to such considerations. The hatred of Russians simply for the sake of hating Russians and all things Russian that is so ubiquitous in the Kiev propaganda can be sensed in this alone. Death and dying, suffering and warfare make you happy. You really think that who rules Donbas is more important than the lives of the people of Donbas and, more telling, you think it more important than the lives of your own people (as you would have it).
Then there is the question of persons involved. You stick to the manta: Ukraine v Russia. For a year DPR and LPR have fought valiantly against, sadly, their brothers. It is quite clearly, blindingly obviously, Ukrainian v Ukrainian and all Ukraine lovers should weep tears of blood over it.
But you ignore it entirely as beneath mention.
Then there is the repeated claim that this and that 'gift' from the USA increases 'Ukraine's' chances of mounting offensives etc. No they don't. Ukraine can mount no offensives. Ukraine today can barely live. Ukraine is on life support. Ukraine asks the world for that support.
It is like a bedridden patient on life support being given a machine gun and you claim you've increased his ability to mount offensives! Yes. If he has someone else to hold the gun for him. Yes, if he has information on targeting provided by someone else. Yes if he is supplied with ammunition and supplies by someone else. Yes if he has transport supplied by someone else.
It is like a hollywood movie. Within a couple of scenes you'd have the walking corpse shot to pieces and shambling zombie like through scene after scene being propped up by what? My imagination fails. It is the last word in macabre. Some ultra horror film. Some disincarnate evil monsters seek to wreak evil havoc on the human world but they need a human body through which to operate...
So they find this hospital bedcase and zombify it...
Add the final black irony - the hospital case will be charged for every 'gift' it receives to enable it to 'mount offensives'.
Yes. You deserve the highest accolades. For masterful misdirection, misrepresentation, deception...
And the price you exact for this? You have had over 100,000 dead and god knows how many injured thus far. I would suppose you're happy with say another 100,000 dead? On the part of those you support! On the part of those you pretend to support!
I am sickened. Was that part of your wish? You got it. I am thoroughly sickened.
