I've heard (from a friend in Moldova) that some of the worst atrocities were committed by Chechans fighting for the Russians, and not the Russian soldiers themselves. What do you think?

Also, when you say the word 'partisans" is that kind of like basically guerrilla warfare? Or militia? What's the best Western world word equivalent?

I think the worst atrocities were committed in this instance by Buryats, but the Chechans are certainly up there. Partisans are indigenous people defending their country by improvised means. Guerillas are more often aggressors, not defenders.
