Here’s another reason why I stay in Ukraine. My children will have opportunity! Per the demographic pyramid below, Oksana’s 1979 birth cohort is close to the most numerous, at 300,000. Over half the population is older than that. A third or so are above the pension age of 60.
The number of young people was already quite low before the war. The numbers born over the past two years have been going down. Eddie, Zoriana and Mariana will grow into a country that needs their contributions. Note that the two most substantial decreases are in (1) kids in their birth cohorts and (2) adults who would bear children in their cohorts.
Unlike in Western Europe and the United States, they will not have to contend for power against large groups descended of immigrants from the global south. These demographic charts represent pretty much only one demographic – ethnic Ukrainians.
The Black Plague brought improved conditions to the working classes of the 14th century. The survivors were so few in number that they could demand and get a pretty good deal from the powers that were. Something similar is likely to happen here.
Add the fact that my kids’ fertility has not been damaged by vaccines, they should be very attractive marriage partners.

That’s assuming they are able to have kids. We are confronted with many medical mysteries. What causes autism? The powers that be swear it is not childhood vaccines. What else could it be? What is causing the surge in excess mortality throughout the highly vaccinated countries. They swear it is not the mRNA jabs. What could it be? Sperm counts are down 50% over the past few decades. Electromagnetic Radiation, though it is all around us, is harmless. What could it be?
I reviewed Joseph Mercola’s book EMF*d last year, in which he suggested there might be a connection. Here is a recent piece in which he is more definitive. Yes, there is a connection between non-ionizing radiation - that’s your cell phone, Wi-Fi, microwave, induction stovetop, neighborhood 5G wireless, etc. etc. - and sperm count.
My house is wired with Cat 5 cable. I should get off my butt and connect our computers via cable instead of Wi-Fi. Leave the Wi-Fi router on – it is in a far corner of the house – but turn it off in the laptops which sit right on our laps. The cable is more awkward, but worth it. And have Eddie turn his phone off when he is in school. Not that it will help – I’m sure every other kid has Wi-Fi on their tablets and phones on in their pockets. I should also buy an RF meter.

I’ve been writing about the declining value of university education off and on. My recent cold made me cancel a scheduled speech on the subject. Now the bad cat, el gato malo, has a wonderful piece on exactly my topic. Like everything the government touches, they have royally screwed up higher education and made it no longer a paying proposition.
That’s the news from Lake WeBeGone, where Zoriana celebrates the last day of her week at home. She (1) has felt good all week, but (2) had been coughing, and (3) said cough has not changed. Oksana, who has the same cough, does feel weak and run down. There is a silver lining in every cloud. I, who got over it more than a week ago, am no longer subjected to lectures about the virtue of FitLine vitamins.
