The Pope and a host of others are urging a peace between Russia and Ukraine. They simply have not thought it through. The current front lines would make an indefensible border. International guarantees - Budapest with regard to nuclear weapons, Minsk with regard to Donbas - have proven worthless. Russia has a centuries-long history of breaking treaties and of aggression against its neighbors. They are not going to change.
Most importantly, the hatred Ukrainians harbor for the Russians will not go away. It has been built through centuries of abuse and betrayal. Famines - 1921 and the Holodomor only the best known. Destruction of Ukrainian language and culture. Use of Ukrainians as cannon fodder - as Russia is now using its subjects from Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Chechnya and Buryatia in this war.
Continued resentment is a given as long as Russia occupies Ukrainian territory. Fifth-column activities, sabotage, assassinations. Ukrainians barely accepted the Soviet Union. They will not accept Russia. The notion of peace is a mirage as long as Russia remains on Ukrainian land.
There is much pious hand-wringing about a generation of Ukrainian men dying “for nothing.” They are dying defending their nation, their heritage, their patrimony. It is the Russians who are dying for nothing - the vainglory of a would-be tsar. Far better to die standing up than on their knees.
That’s my take from Kyiv. Now please read an expert.
We westerners of good will and those who cherish democracy want western weapons to arrive in Ukraine without delay.
We think about Ukraine every day.
SLAVA UKRAINI!
I think as follows.
It is especially important for politicians to think about what politicians in other countries are thinking.
①Trump doesn't even think about what Putin is thinking. ②He only thinks about the short term. ③He hasn't studied history. Especially the Russian character. ④He is also blind to science. ⑤The only thing he thinks about is gaining popularity for himself. He has no idea about the American people or the future of the United States. He never mentioned a future vision for the United States. ⑥ Politicians from European countries were also piggybacking on the United States to avoid the economic burden. The person who made the mistake was, in particular, former Prime Minister Merkel. It's good to have her on the front lines of battle.
Still, if the American people choose Trump, the United States will have resources and food, and will be able to feed itself even if it is closed off. However, in the long term, the economy is bound to stagnate. If he stops aid to Ukraine, Russia will eventually expand west of Ukraine and try to take over Poland, the three Baltic states, and Moldova. This is the character of Russia. European countries will also have to bear a greater burden than they currently do.
In the East, China will be overjoyed and in the long run will attack neighboring countries when the timing is right. In other words, the US market will be lost.
