Arrest of Russian General Surovikin
Gen. Surovikin, known as “Gen. Armageddon” because of his service in Syria, commanded the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late 2022. He was demoted, after completing a successful retreat across the Dnieper River by 20,000 Russian troops who were at risk of being captured by Ukrainian forces. For this, he got demoted. Surovikin is likely the most competent of the Russian generals who have commanded Russia’s latest invasion.
Perhaps because of his demotion, Surovikin became a supporter of Yevgeniy Prigozhin. Apparently, he knew of Wagner’s plans to move on Moscow in advance. Last Saturday, he taped a speech, where he exhorted Prigozhin to stop his advance on Moscow. GZERO, in a report today, suggested that the speech may have been made after his arrest where, for effect, the Russian FSB gave him an unloaded gun that he was holding on his lap.
In the “Latest Denys,” he showed a list of the Russians who were in the command plane that the Wagners shot down last Saturday. GZERO reported that the command plane was assigned to Surovikin, but Surovikin was not a passenger, perhaps further suggesting that Surovikin was arrested last Saturday, or before, while in Rostov-on-Don.
Kramatorsk Missile Attack
The recent Russian missile strike on a restaurant in Kramatorsk, a garrison city not far from Bakhmut, is only the latest Russian strike directed at Ukrainian civilians. So far there are 12 confirmed deaths.
There were previous strikes on the Kramatorsk Railroad Station, at a time when refugees were waiting to board a train where 60 people, including many children, were killed or maimed by cluster munitions, bomblets that do off indiscriminately, an apartment complex in Dnipro where approximately 40 were killed, and a shopping center in Kremenchuk.
What made this recent strike particularly insidious was the catching, red handed, of a local citizen who not only transmitted the coordinates of the restaurant to the Russian military, but he made sure, with real-time reporting to the Russian military, that the attack took place at a time when the restaurant was full of diners. Ukraine has just sentenced a resident of Mykolaiv, who was caught doing the same thing, to life imprisonment.
Kramatorsk has become a place where soldiers who have been at the front can come for brief rest and relaxation, often joined by their wives and partners. The restaurant was a popular place to eat and relax. There is a special place in Hell for the person who was arrested, along with those members of the Russian military who either ordered or conducted the strike. Given the previous strikes against civilians, that place will soon become very crowded.
Bohdan, in his report today, included a time sequence of the takeoff of a Russian Tu-22 bomber, the type used to launch the Kinzhal hypersonic missile. It gives an indication of the level of sophistication of Ukkraine’s early warning system but, without adequate air defenses some of the strikes are impossible to stop, and Kinzhals and Iskander ballistic missiles don’t provide much time to react. It is shown in bold face.
News From the Battlefield
“Ukraine Says ‘Main Event’ in Counteroffensive Still to Come”/FT - Interview with Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Raznikov. Roman Olearchuk, the FT reporter who wrote this article is, along with Ilya Ponomarenko of the Kyiv Independent, the most experienced journalist covering the war. Roman has been covering events in Eastern Ukraine, and in Donbas, since at least 2014.
In his interview, Reznikov is alluding to the fact that Ukraine has still not committed the brigades that have received Western training and who possess much of new weapons that Ukraine has received from the West. Personally, I don’t see what the rush is. An article In today’s Wall Street Journal commented that “the offensive in the South is on hold.” The facts seem to suggest otherwise.
Ukraine continues to advance along the entire front, without the benefit of the new brigades. They are facing Russian troops who may be demoralized and without proper support. If true, this chain of tweets describes the conditions faced by Russian troops in the trench networks in southern Ukraine. The chain starts with this comment, from a captured Russian soldier – “Mobilised Russians facing the Ukrainian counter-offensive say they were "abandoned like kittens" by their commanders, faced Ukrainian tanks and artillery with light weapons, little ammo and no counter-fire, took heavy casualties, and had no medical evacuations on hand.”
The New York Times recently breathlessly described in some detail the Russian trench network that Ukrainians will face in their counteroffensive. In addition, the NYT pointed out that Ukraine will be attacking across open country, leaving them open to Russian air attacks. It is almost as if the New York Times views the current counteroffensive as a futile exercise. I’m sure the Russian Information Ministry would approve.
What is missing from the NYT article, and many others, is the fact that Ukraine faced the same conditions last year, in its counterattack in Kherson that drove the Russians out of the Right Bank of the Dnieper River and liberated Kherson City. Last year, Ukraine was opposed by 20,000 experienced Russian troops (the Kherson counteroffensive took place before the Russian “partial mobilization”), who had time to prepare defenses, and they had the advantage of open country as described by the NY Times as a problem for Ukraine.
In 2012 I drove through this part of Kherson Oblast, west of the Dniieper – it’s as flat as a billiard table. Just like the current counteroffensive, the Kherson counteroffensive started slowly, with 2 months of minimal gains, and the requisite carping from the Western press, before Ukraine broke through. As is the case this year, Ukraine was able to cut off Russian logistics by extensive artillery preparation and blowing up bridges, not dis-similar to what they are doing in the current offensive.
After mentioning the “open country,” the NYT then went on to discuss the importance of tree lines, not exactly open country, giving the advantage of cover to the Russians, as if this is new information. This isn’t new – we’ve spoken about the importance of tree lines in past emails. The latest “Reporting From Ukraine” contains video clips showing open country and a network of tree lines outside of Bakhmut, as well as a network of Russian trenches. It appears that Ukraine understands how to operate under these conditions.
Western Businesses Staying in Russia/article in Ukrainska Pravda
A few excerpts:
· “A shift in attitudes towards Western firms operating in Russia is gradually becoming a trend. As it turns out, the companies that were the first to leave may benefit most. How so?”
· “One of the world's largest food producers, Mondelez, faced a boycott of its products in Western countries after being included on the Ukrainian list of international sponsors of war” by choosing to stay in Russia.
· “The shift in attitudes towards Western firms operating in Russia is gradually becoming a trend. Meanwhile, ethical companies that left Russia in the first months of the invasion may be rewarded for their choice when Russian assets are seized and during Ukraine’s recovery.”
· “Estimating the amount of funding from Western companies that goes to Russia is not too challenging. The Austrian Raiffeisen Bank alone paid €560 million into Russian coffers last year. At least a third of this amount may have been used to purchase missiles or pay the salaries of Russian military personnel.”
· “We have estimated that the taxes paid by international companies that remain in Russia, which is US$18 billion a year, are enough to fully fund two months of the war in Ukraine," Natalia Popovych, co-founder of the B4Ukraine coalition, a global civil society initiative established to block access to the economic resources funding Russian aggression, told Economichna Pravda.”
Metro Cash & Carry, shown as “Metro” in the above table, is a German company similar to Costco in the U.S. In Ukraine, many small community markets rely on Metro’s wholesale division as a source of supply for their stores. I am familiar with one such community market. The owners get up early, to be the first in line at the checkpoints, and drive almost 100km each way to one of the Metros in Kyiv to replenish the inventory for their store. I’m sure that they’re now using other alternatives.
