Eddie's school gave him 100 problems to work over the summer. It is an interesting workout – a check to see if my 80-year-old brain, long out of school, was up to the task. It is not just math, but mathematical logic.
I had posted the problem with the mislabeled weights here. Thanks again, Notch and Camilla, for the insight that if two weightings with five weights each balanced, they must be right.
There are a few other problems in this collection that I am not sure that I understood. There is one that I do understand but I cannot prove. Number 28 asks for the sum of an infinite series. It seems pretty obvious that the series sums to one, but I could not prove it and could not find a solution on the Internet.
I know some of you are interested in these problems. I have uploaded three files:
https://grahamseibert.com/Edward/100_problems_ukrainian.pdf
https://grahamseibert.com/Edward/PL_ENGLISH.docx
https://grahamseibert.com/Edward/PL_ENGLISH_white.docx
First is the original Ukrainian. Second is English, with my solutions in red. Third is English with the same solutions in a white font. Solutions only show up when you highlight the invisible text in the blank spaces and ask for a font color other than white.
Why do they do this to people? What is the fucking point? It's okay if you're curious and you want to play mind games, but they do this to school children. What happens to kids when they are battered with this nonsense? Those curious excited kids, before they go to school, turn to drugs, alcohol, and are bored out of their minds by the school system, which was designed originally by the Prussian government to make soldiers compliant and efficient in war by following orders and not thinking for themselves. It's vile, disgusting, and evil. Schools must be shuttered so that humanity can escape this monstrous stupidity. It's obvious that this is not working effectively to create happy, fulfilled, and successful adults. Look around, almost everybody is miserable and unhappy going to insufferable jobs that they hate, and while at work they die spiritually and emotionally and are left as wrecks after they retire. School doesn't teach anything worthwhile. We learn in spite of school, not because of it.
