Sorry, this is a bit late.  I’ve been working all day on my “day job,” with a paying client.  I’m able to squeeze this in before cocktail hour.  For the next few weeks, it will be “day to day.”

HIMARS (Yesterday’s CBS “Sunday Morning”)

There are plenty of Ukrainian women I know, who would love to operate a HIMARS as the U.S. Army Staff Sargent is doing in this video.   One of the things not mentioned is the ability of Ukrainians to develop links, between the commercial drones they have modified for target acquisition, and the HIMARS guidance system.

I feel a need to make a pilgrimage to the HIMARS factory in Arkansas.

The Latest Denys

Ukraine is beginning to release progress reports on the fighting around Kherson.   He also reports on Ukrainian gains in the east, toward Lyman, and reported riots and refusals to fight among Russian soldiers.  

Kherson Campaign

My own source reports that there are gains in some parts of Kherson, but not in others, and Ukraine is running low on ammunition.   Russians are also running low, because Ukraine has destroyed the 3 bridges across the Dnieper River and a 4th across the Inhulets River that bisects Russian controlled territory on the Right Bank of the Dnieper.  Russians are no unable to be re-supplied.   According to reports, senior Russian commanders have fled the Right Bank, and are now either on the Left Bank or in Crimea.

·        The first involves limiting the prices of imported gas from Russia, and the second - the creation of administrative price zones for the most affected EU countries, the so-called "red zones".

10:09: The 8th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Association Council will take place in Brussels on 5 September.

·        The Association Council will discuss the EU-Ukraine bilateral agenda, notably the implementation of the Association Agreement and state of play of EU-Ukraine cooperation.

·        Despite its effects to contain recent Ukrainian offensive action, Russia’s main effort in Ukraine almost certainly remains its Donbas offensive operation. Its principal axes of advance in the Donbas remain at Avdiivka near Donetsk and, 60km to the north, around Bakhmut.

·        Although Russia has had the most success in this sector, its forces have still only been advancing around 1km per week towards Bakhmut.

·        The political goal of the Donbas operation almost certainly remains to secure the whole of the Donetsk region, which would enable the Kremlin to announce the ‘liberation’ of the Donbas. Russian forces have highly likely repeatedly missed deadlines to achieve this aim.

·        The Ukrainian authorities have claimed that Russian forces are now under orders to complete this mission by 15 September 2022. The force is highly unlikely to achieve this, which will further complicate Russia’s plans to run referendums on the occupied areas joining the Russian Federation.

09:24 Institute for the Study of War:

·        The counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is noticeably advancing in the south and east

·        The pace of the counteroffensive is likely to change dramatically from day to day as Ukrainian forces attempt to deprive the Russians of logistics, destroy their command-and-control posts, and weaken morale.

·        The Russians will occasionally counterattack and recapture some of the lost positions, conducting heavy artillery and air attacks on the liberated settlements and the following Ukrainian forces.

·        Ukrainian troops regained territory on the left bank of the Siverskyi Donets River.

·        The personnel of the 127th regiment of the so-called "DPR" of the 1st Army Corps refused to fight due to lack of supplies.

·        Forced mobilization continues in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

·        About 70 occupiers live on the first floor of the school building in Orlianske, the Zaporizhzhia region, while children, including first-graders, study on the second floor, and enemy military equipment is located in the school yard.

·        The General Staff of the Armed Forces: NATO is strengthening its presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, deploying 8 multinational battle groups on the territory of participating countries: Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

·        All these groups are combat units. In this way, NATO demonstrates the strength of transatlantic ties and decisive readiness.
