“The Noble Fury of Samuel Adams - How America’s “first politician” galvanized a colony—and helped set a revolution in motion” Smithsonian Magazine
Samuel Adams was the lesser-known distant cousin of John Adams, who became the 2nd President of the United States. This article is about Samuel Adams, primarily covering the early days before the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April of 1775, that marked the beginning of the American Revolution.
A Philadelphia colleague of Adams noted that “He eats little, drinks little, sleeps little, thinks much, and is most decisive and indefatigable in the pursuit of his objects.” More than 2 centuries later, Samuel Adams would’ve been amused that a popular craft beer has been named after him – “Samuel Adams.”
Adams might have reminded today’s Russians, “To have a villainous ruler imposed on you was a misfortune. To elect him yourself was a disgrace. At the same time, he was unremittingly pragmatic. Adams saw no reason that high-minded ideals should shy from underhanded tactics.”
Much of the article covered the events around March 5th, 1770, when a squad of British soldiers who were occupying Boston fired on a group of citizens, killing several. The event became known as the “Boston Massacre.”
The account of the Boston Massacre, the first spark that later set off the American Revolution, was very similar to the events in Kyiv from February 18, 2014, when fighting broke out on Independence Square, between the protestors and former President Yanukovich’s Interior Ministry troops known as “Berkut,” through the morning of February 20th when 100 protestors, now known as the “Heavenly 100,” were murdered by sharpshooters acting under the orders of Yanukovich’s Government, to early in the morning of February 22nd, when Yanukovich fled Kyiv.
It took 12 ½ years, between the Boston Massacre and the British defeat at Yorktown ending the American Revolution. It has now been “only” 8 ½ years, between the day Yanukovich fled Kyiv, and today, when we’re seeing Ukraine taking back large swaths of captured territory. This is something that both the French, whose ancestors provided the weapons and military support that help the Colonials win their freedom from Great Britain, and Americans, who are providing Ukrainians with weapons that will defeat Russia, should remember.
The soldiers who fired on the crowd on March 5th, 1660, were arrested and tried in a colonial court. Their defense attorney was John Adams. They were all acquitted.
Battlefield Situation
It seems like Ukraine is trying for a breakout from the remaining part of Kharkiv Oblast toward Luhansk. This could be even bigger than the breakout earlier this month that drove the Russians out of most of Kharkiv Oblast, yet there seems to be very little reporting about this from the Western press. The videos from “Reporting From Ukraine” and The Latest Denys both cover the imminent Ukrainian encirclement of Lyman, now occupied by 3,000 Russian troops, and what Ukraine will do in the near future, starting with the likely liberation of Lysychansk.
Denys talks about continued Russian attacks against Donetsk, where they seem to run up against strong Ukrainian defensive positions, much of which Ukraine has continually built up since 2014. The only success Russia has had, if one can call it that, has been around Bakhmut. To me trying to attack strong static defenses in Donetsk Oblast seems like a fool’s errand, especially considering what is happening to Russian troops to the northeast.
At the same time Ukraine seems to have decided, at least for the moment, to leave Crimea and the area around Melitopol to the tender mercies of the partisans who, on their own, are doing a lot of damage to Russian infrastructure and killing Ukrainian collaborators and Rssian officials. 25,000 Russian troops are trapped on the Right Bank of the Dnieper, in Kherson, much like 40,000 Japanese troops were trapped by General MacArthur’s Army and the U.S. 7th Fleet along the North Coast of New Guinea during WW-II – a potent force to be sure, but with no place to go.
