“I have young children. Unfortunately, they were born at the wrong time. If they were born earlier, they would be mobilized.”
Margarita Simonyan, Head of Russia Today
As reported by Julia Davis, in an article in the “Daily Beast.” When she was in secondary school Simonyan was an exchange student at a high school in Bristol, New Hampshire. I have been waiting patiently for some enterprising reporter to go up to Bristol and write about Simonyan’s time as a student in the United States. Bristol is north of Concord, NH, on Interstate 93, and west of Lebanon/Hanover, NH. Perhaps this is something for the Dartmouth College student newspaper. Ironically, the New Hampshire State Motto is “Live Free or Die.”
The Latest Lawrence Freedman
Freedman starts his latest Substack blog with a passage from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1 –
Prince Henry
But tell me, Jack, whose fellows are these that come after?
Falstaff
Mine, Hal, mine.
Prince Henry
I did never see such pitiful rascals.
Falstaff
Tut, tut; good enough to toss; food for powder, food for powder; they'll fill a pit as well as better: tush, man, mortal men, mortal men.
William Shakespeare: Henry IV (Pt 1), Act IV, Scene II
Freedman believes that Russia’s objective in ordering the “partial mobilization” is to draw out the war, by causing problems for Ukraine to break through Russian defense lines, hoping to get to the point, next year, where the West will tire of the war and force Ukraine to negotiate.
Some passages:
“Russia is already digging deep into reserves of weapons and equipment, and there are few spare officers available to undertake their instruction. Nonetheless despite those protesting and escaping many have turned up as required, however fatalistic their mood. Some of these will be better prepared than others, especially those who have recently completed their period of conscription. We should not assume therefore that those turning up will all be unwilling or incapable of fighting.”
“Against prepared defensive positions backed by artillery such attacks invite carnage and ‘cannon fodder’ becomes an appropriate term. But used defensively they might complicate Ukrainian plans and make it harder to take places where Russians are already well dug in.”
“Meanwhile a comparable situation is developing around Lyman in Luhansk, where Russian forces have been fighting off the Ukrainians but now risk getting caught by an envelopment operation. A number of significant advances have been made in recent days, and this may be where Russia is most vulnerable to a further conspicuous defeat which would cast doubt on all its current efforts to demonstrate that it has a route to victory. Newly drafted men pushed into this fight have already been killed or captured. A village was reportedly taken because the defending soldiers were drunk. ‘The ones who were sober ran away, and the ones who were drunk didn’t even realize that the village was being attacked, and got caught.’ “ More on Lyman below.
News From the Battlefield
The latest “Reporting From Ukraine” focuses mostly on Kherson, where Ukraine is facing slow going and the Russians from lack of supplies. I don’t quite understand the report about Russian reinforcements into the Right Bank of the Dnieper. Ukraine has destroyed the bridges across both the Dnieper and Inhulets Rivers. To get across, reinforcements must use ferries that are open to Ukrainian attacks.
Parts of Kherson that I have been to, going toward Mykolaiv, are as flat as a billiard table and without much foliage. There are a lot of vegetable farms, much of it tomatoes, that serve a big tomato processing plant that is located in this area. It would be hard for offensive operations, especially creating any sort of artillery fire bases, making stand-off weapons like HIMARS more important.
Going toward Kherson City and the Dnieper is more rolling country, but still without much foliage. Kherson City itself sits on a bluff overlooking the Dnieper River. I have fond memories of Kherson City. As with all other towns and cities that Ukraine is liberating, I hope Kherson is re-taken, without significant damage.
The Latest Denys is mostly about Ukraine’s offensive around Lyman, in the Donbas, where Russians holding Lyman are at risk of being surrounded. Ukraine appears to be intent on completing its liberation of all the Kharkiv Region and moving on to Luhansk Oblast. The military reporter Illia Ponomarenko sent out a recent Tweet, stating, “The possibility of major Russian defeat in the Lyman-Yampil area is now very high.” Taking the portion of Luhansk Oblast that Russia occupied after February 24th will create difficulties for Putin from achieving his goal of taking all of Donbas.
