Russian Battlefield Losses
In addition to the table below, in the Section marked “9/27 Sitrep” this table, from an article in the “Kyiv Independent,” breaks down Russian losses between equipment that is captured intact, that can be used by Ukraine, and equipment that is destroyed that, at best, can be used as a source of spare parts. The recent Ukrainian counterattack in the Kharkiv Region has become a major procurement source of military equipment for Ukraine.
The original article in the “Kyiv Independent,” entitled “Hundreds of Russian vehicles, weapon systems seized during Kharkiv counterattack” goes into great detail on the make-up of the equipment “acquired” by Ukraine under Russia’s special “Lend Lease” Program. Especially interesting are the sections on the implications of Ukraine’s capture, intact, of the newest Russian main battle tank, the T-90M, and the section entitled “Infantry Vehicles and Carriers.’ Because Ukraine has a relatively small number of tanks, thanks to Western, especially German, recalcitrance on delivering them, infantry fighting vehicles became the tip of the spear in Ukraine’s Kharkiv counterattack, giving Ukraine a speed advantage.
Report From a Friend
Yesterday I spoke with a friend of mine who has a son and a possible son-in-law fighting in the Ukrainian Army. He said that his son’s unit is being redeployed to a border area that has been relatively quiet for the past several months, in response to a Russian build-up. This reminds me of a recent problem we had with mice – you plug one hole, and you see evidence of them showing up somewhere else.
Regarding his possible future son-in-law, he said that his unit is in Bakhmut, where they’re facing Russian soldiers from the Wagner group, plus prison inmates recently recruited by Wagner. He said that his possible son-in-law reports that they’re short on ammunition, where his group fires 1 round to the Riussians’ 10. A recent report in the New York Times said that Wagner uses the inmates to attack first, so regular Russian troops don’t have to expose themselves, and most of inmates are killed.
These are tactics that the Soviets often used during WW-II. In one of his books, the military historian Sir Antony Beevor describes how the Soviets lost as many troops in their invasion of Romania in September 1944 than the Allies lost in the 11 months between the landings at Normandy and Nazi Germany’s surrender.
More Information From the Battlefield
Both “Reporting From Ukraine” and the Latest Denys talk primarily about the battle for Lyman and the broader movements in the remaining part of the Kharkiv Region that Ukraine doesn’t control, and the entrance into Luhansk Oblast. It seems as if Ukraine sees an opportunity to double down on Donbas, and possible retake most or all of Luhansk Oblast. This would drive a stake into Putin’s stated goal of re-taking all of Donbas.
Just Received – Damage to Ukraine’s Crop Storage Facilities
This report, from the “Conflict Observatory,” an organization dedicated to documenting Russian war crimes in Ukraine. I haven’t had the chance to read it, but the latest issue of the “Kyiv Independent” has an article about how Russia is going around Sub-Saharan Africa, telling African leaders and the media that Ukraine is at fault for grain shortages in their countries.
What I noticed is how much damage has been done to facilities that are relatively far from the fighting.
