“Ukraine’s Counteroffensive is More than Just Bravado” (David Ignatius/Washington Post)
In his column, Ignatius is saying pretty much what we’ve been saying for the last few months, especially about the role of partisans, except we believe that the war will end up being shorter than what he predicts. We think Ukraine will be using strategies in Kherson similar to what proved to be a success last March around Kyiv, modified to conform to conditions in Kherson.
“Ukraine Makes Its Move” (Financial Times)
Roman Olearchuk, one of the co-authors, has been reporting from Ukraine for many years. The article contains an excellent map, showing areas where the fighting is now taking place.
The Latest Denys
Two interesting takeaways from Denys’ latest video:
· Denys describes a 3-pronged Ukrainian attack against approximately 25,000 Russians occupying the Right Bank of the Dnieper River around Kherson Cith, including one launched directly from Mykolaiv toward Kherson City. However, Denys thinks that the 2 major thrusts are taking place on the north and middle parts of the right bank, and the move toward Kherson City being more of a fake to draw off Russian forces. The objective is to cut off Russian forces on the Right Bank of the Dnieper into 3 separate pockets, as shown on the tactical map in Denys’ video.
· Denys believes that Ukraine now has air superiority over the Right Bank. He says that the ability of Russia to use rotary wing and ground attack aircraft is very limited due to Ukraine’s use of Stingers and other short range anti-aircraft weapons, and Ukraine has been able to place longer range anti-aircraft weapons on territory it occupies. Russia appears to have moved their fixed-wing aircraft away from bases in Crimea, leaving only one operational base, near Melitopol.
Times Radio (Times reporter Richard Spencer reporting from Mykolaiv)
In his interview Spencer stated that he is hearing reports of Russian soldiers on the Right Bank of the Dnieper either fleeing or refusing to fight. Other reports we’ve seen indicate that this is most prevalent among conscripts from the 2 “Peoples’ Republics” in Donbas, that were apparently stationed near the front lines directly facing the Ukrainian Army. If this is true, it reminds one of the German 6th Army’s use of Italian and Romanian forces, to cover their rear as the 6th Army advanced into Stalingrad.
Corruption Hasn’t Taken a Holiday
This is the website of Ukraine’s Security Service. There is an English version. We’ve been getting reports of a scheme involving the theft of food and other items intended for internally displaced people taking refuge in Zaporizhzhіa, a hub for Ukrainians fleeing Mariupol and other temporarily occupied cities and regions. People set up NGOs to accept money from well-meaning contributors, buy the food and other items intended for assisting internally displaced people, and then fence it to markets operated at least 1 large national retail chain. We would strongly suggest that if you do make contributions, which are welcome, that you do it directly to well-known organizations with a reputation, like World Central Kitchen, of applying almost all the funds they receive to actual assistance (as opposed to bureaucratic overhead), and individuals that you know, the female sniper, the Kharkiv mortar team, and the church in Bila Tsirkva being 3 examples. We will provide more information about this incident as we receive it, but feel free to check on the SSU’s website.

I'm hearing contradictory reports of what is happening to the Ukrainian offensive. I've heard everything from, the offensive has been broken with heavy casualties, to, the Russians are demoralised , thousands of their troops are trapped by uncrossable rivers and are crumbling fast. What is the general feeling of how things are going, in Kyiv? I'm guessing that the mood of the people will be linked to news from relatives at the front, so might give a good idea of how things are going.
