Review of the Bidding
Russia now seems to be reduced to employing a two–pronged strategy in Ukraine, consisting of their use of mercenaries, including the Wagner Group, to engage in limited offensives in Donetsk Oblast, in front of Bakhmut and Donetsk City, and attacks against civilian infrastructure, especially if such an attack can both intimidate the civilian population and, at the same time, yield a military advantage for Russia, if only temporary.
The recent damage to the dam near the city of Kryvyi Rih, caused by a Russian missile strike, is an example. The dam holds back a reservoir that not only provides Kryvyi Rih with its water supply, but it also feeds into the Inhulets River. The Inhulets travels through the part of Kherson Oblast where Ukraine has trapped 25,000 Russian soldiers, splitting this part of Kherson Oblast in 2. The Inhulets eventually empties into the Dnieper River.
According to this report, because of the damage to the dam the flow of water flowing out of the reservoir near Kryvyi Rih is raising the surface of the Inhulets River by approximately 1 meter, potentially destroying the pontoon bridges Ukraine has constructed across the Inhulets. These bridges support part of Ukraine’s counteroffensive in Kherson. Their loss could leave units of the Ukrainian Army open to Russian counterattacks.
At the same time Ukraine is consolidating its gains in Kharkiv Oblast. In addition to the ongoing offensive in Kherson, Ukrainian leaders appear to be deciding where to strike next. The most likely possibility is a strike south toward Melitopol. If successful, this attack would yield the following benefits to Ukraine:
· Splitting the temporarily occupied portion of Ukraine located between Mariupol and Kherson City, further isolating Russian troops on the Right Bank of the Dnieper River and blocking Russia’s land route to Crimea.
· Gives Ukraine a jumping off point to retake Crimea, with the proviso that the routes into Crimea consist of 2 narrow necks of land that are easily blocked.
· Hooking up with partisans who have been active in and around Melitopol throughout the war.
· Gives Ukraine the option of moving east, against both Mariupol and Port of Berdyansk, both located on Sea of Azov.
· Putting the Kerch Bridge within the range of Ukraine’s long-range rocket systems.
Disadvantages include:
· The terrain. The report, referenced above, describes this area as being bisected by several rivers. Rivers have played a huge role in the conduct of this war, including:
o the Dnieper, flowing down the middle of Ukraine and dividing the country between east and west;
o the Irpin that played a significant role in stopping the Russian advance on Kyiv early in the war;
o the Sverski Donets River that continues to drive strategy for both sides in the Donbas;
o the Southern Bug that stymied the Russian advance on Odesa;
o the Oskil flowing south from Kursk, in Russia, toward the Sverski Donetsk River and constituting the border between Kharkiv and Luhansk Regions, and now the Inhulets.
· Russia can still move supplies from Crimea toward Melitopol, but the connections between Crimea and Ukraine proper can be cut.
The Latest Denys
Denys speaks about the need for Ukraine to take Troitske and Svatove, towns in northern Luhansk Oblast that sit on Russian rail supply routes toward Svierodonetsk and Lysychansk, and Russia’s reliance on these routes to supply their garrisons in both Lyman and Yampil, both of which are currently under attack by Ukraine. He believes that Russian defenders of Lyman largely consist of mercenaries.
Times Radio
An account from one of their reporters from recently liberated Izyum, covering at least one mass grave containing over 400 bodies, several of whom appear to be victims of torture and wanton murder. Izyum was occupied by Russia for over 5 months, compared to only 1 month for Bucha and Irpin. It is likely that only 1 mass grave barely scratches the surface.
