Yesterday, in honor of Ukraine’s battlefield success over the past few days, we bought a bunch of sunflowers, and my wife fixed potato pancakes for dinner.
The pundits all talk about how Ukraine could never have succeeded were it not for Western weapons. Western weapons in the hands of an incompetent and unmotivated Army would’ve been useless. In addition to Western weapons, Ukraine is succeeding because of the quality of its leadership, its tactical acumen and, above all, the courage of all its people, military and civilians alike. This is something that both Russia and Ukraine’s Western supporters have come to realize somewhat belatedly.
In spite of my joy over Ukraine’s recent successes, what is always in the back of my mind is the August 29, 2014 tragedy at Ilovaisk, Donetsk Oblast, where Ukrainian troops were murdered by Russian soldiers after Russians offered them a “green corridor” to withdraw from Ilovaisk after it had been surrounded by Russian regular troops, who had entered Donetsk Oblast to bail out so-called “separatists” who were in the process of being routed by Ukrainian troops. As Gen. Hodges said in his video, below, Ukraine needs to keep its foot on Russia’s throat, and they can best do that by the West continuing, and even increasing, weapons deliveries.
Over the past 6 months Ukraine seems to have improved the quality of its leadership at the top, from, arguably, a rather low beginning. This article, from Ukrainska Pravda, serves to remind us of the disorganization that took place in the Presidential Administration just prior to the start of Russia’s most recent invasion. What eventually needs to be answered is how Russian tanks appeared in front of Kyiv’s Opera House on Day 2 of the invasion, or why Russia was able to quickly cross into Ukraine from Crimea, a route that could’ve been easily blocked, and cross the Dnieper and occupy Kherson. I fear that when Ukraine re-takes Kherson, occupied by Russians for over 6 months, what they will find will make Bucha and Irpin pale in comparison.
Times Radio
Things are moving so fast, that the tactical maps produced by Denys and others are often out of date when before they’re released. Here are 3 excellent analyses of what appears to be unfolding:
· Dr. Mike Martin, Kings College London & Former British Army Officer - In his remarks, among other things Martin talks about the fact that Ukraine is continually receiving tactical intelligence from both U.S. and British sources. He also mentions the possibility of Ukraine possibly being able to bring forward reserves and, if they can, this might serve to break Russia’s presence in Ukraine. The UK is continually training large numbers of Ukrainian troops in the UK. He mentions reports that Ukraine is moving toward Mariupol. Hard to believe just by looking at the map, but according to reports Russia has moved troops out of Mariupol to support Kherson. Anything is possible.
· Robert Fox, Defense Editor, “Evening Standard – In his video, Fox mentions that Russia has abandoned a Ukrainian border town near Belgorod, Russian Federation, and well north of Ukraine’s major offensive. Yesterday, Denys mentioned the possibility of Ukraine turning north from Kobiansk, so this might be the result.
· Gen Ben Hodges (Ret.) – Hodges is the person whom I think has correctly predicted the events are witnessing now. Hodges now believes that Ukraine may not only reclaim all of its pre-February 24th territory by the end of 2022, but also Crimea and occupied Donbas as well. If Ukraine breaks through in both Kherson and Melitopol, where there has been continual partisan activity, Crimea is something that cannot be completely dismissed. He suggests that there may be reckoning between minority areas of Russia that have taken the brunt of the casualties, and the “Slavic Center,” and that the West needs to start thinking about this possibility.
In today’s UN Security Council meeting Russia, which called the meeting, demanded that Ukraine return all the weapons that Russian troops have abandoned on Ukrainian territory. As a friend of mine likes to say, if true “you can’t make this up.”

10:20 Reuters: The swift fall of Izium was Moscow's worst defeat since its troops were forced back from Kyiv.
· Russian forces used Izium as the logistics base for one of their main campaigns - a months-long assault from the north on the adjacent Donbas region comprised of Donetsk and Luhansk.
10:19 NYT: US officials highly appreciated the sophistication of Ukrainian preparations for a counter-offensive.
· The decision to advertise their counteroffensive in the south before striking the northeast is a standard method of disorientation, which is used by American special forces training Ukrainians after the occupation of Crimea.
09:08 US National Security Adviser: The Armed Forces of Ukraine must independently determine when and how to liberate the territories occupied by Russia in 2014-2015, that is, before the February 24 invasion.
· The adviser to the US president noted the positive consequences of the counter-offensive of Ukrainian troops in the south and the Kharkiv region.
· “This counteroffensive, above all, shows that one cannot simply say that Russia has occupied the occupied territories forever and will impose its political system on them. This is an important signal both at the military-tactical and political-diplomatic levels. And we will support the efforts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with logistics , supplies, weapons, equipment,” Sullivan said.

22:25 Deputy Secretary of Defense: The USА has allocated $14.5 billion in aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
· He noted that part of the aid was purchased under contracts from defense industry manufacturers.
· The aid to Ukraine is part of a much larger package of approximately $42 billion of spending, that contains money for Covid-19 relief and other programs. I have been concerned that the entire spending package, including Ukraine relief that has bi-partisan support, might run into Congressional opposition. As a result of Ukraine’s recent successes, I think such opposition is less likely. As President Kennedy said, “success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan.”
19:39: French President Emmanuel Macron spoke in favor of the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Zaporizhzhia NPP area.
· "The situation around the Zaporizhzhia power plant is still causing serious concern. We support President Zelensky in calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the area to ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities", – Macron writes.

· "Germany and Europe are ready to endure the consequences if Russia decides to completely stop gas supplies", – the Chancellor of Germany says.
15:40 El Mundo: The Spanish army will join the process of training the Ukrainian military.
· "Spain has been preparing for weeks for the arrival of Ukrainian military contingents who will undergo training at the base of our country," - the message reads.
16:16 Center of National Resistance: Provocations with shelling of schools are possible in the temporarily occupied territories.
· Russia has sent the UN and international humanitarian organizations the addresses and exact coordinates of all educational institutions that started working on September 1. There is a possibility that the Russians will carry out bloody provocations in schools and kindergartens, with subsequent accusations of this to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
16:07: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbok, who arrived in Ukraine today, visited the Kyiv region. She promises further help with demining.
· "What I see here is more than terrible. It is obvious that not only anti-tank mines, but also anti-personnel mines were deliberately planted here”.
15:20 DW: Germany will have 6 terminals for the import of liquefied gas.
· The country's government leased another regasification vessel. The reception of liquefied gas will begin already in December. Plants for the import of "green" hydrogen will be built in parallel.
14:16: The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) appealed to UEFA and FIFA with a demand to prevent the Russian national team from holding a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, - the UAF website says.
· In addition, the UAF appealed directly to its Bosnian colleagues:
o "The decision of the Football Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina looks as if it is aimed at supporting the actions and actions of the Russian government in Ukraine regarding the continuation of the war. Please reconsider the decision, which damages the image of your country and the relations between our associations".
13:16 European Truth: Latvian President Egils Levits spent the night in Kyiv. He is the first Western leader to stay overnight in the capital during Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

· Over the last 24 hours, Ukrainian forces have continued to make significant gains in the Kharkiv region. Russia has likely withdrawn units from the area but fighting continues around the strategically important cities of Kupiansk and Izium.
· The agency recalled that on 07 September 2022, President Putin said that only 60,000 tonnes of the grain exported from Ukraine since August had been sent to developing countries, and that the majority had been delivered to EU states.
o “Putin's claim is not true. According to UN figures, around 30% has been supplied to low and middle-income countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia,” reports British Intelligence.
· British Intelligence believes that Russia is pursuing a deliberate misinformation strategy as it seeks to deflect blame for food insecurity issues, discredit Ukraine and minimise opposition to its invasion.

· Over the past 24 hours, Russians have launched 16 missiles and 34 air strikes against military and civilian targets on the territory of Ukraine. 28 settlements were affected

o In Kherson, the residential premises of the Shidnyi (East) district were searched, from which the Antonivskyi Bridge is visible. The residents of Kakhovka and Kozatske were warned by the Russian military about shooting if they came close to the crossings.
· At the same time, the Defense Forces once again repelled the attacks of the Russians in the areas of Sosnivka, Maiorsk, Mykolaivka Druha, Zaitseve, Vesela Dolyna, Soledar, Bakhmut, Pisky, Pervomaiske and Novomykhailivka.

· "We have to understand: if Russia stays the way it is, it's only a matter of time before it can start another war. Therefore, our task is to make Russia so that it does not even have the desire to think that it can attack its neighbors, especially in the way it did in relation to our country"- Danilov said.
23:47: The military armies of the Russian Federation want to surrender. During the telephone conversation, they find out the conditions and procedure of actions that must be carried out for this.
· One of the questions of the Russian soldier surprised the employee of the Ukrainian special services: "Are you going to cut off our eggs?"
· However, Ukraine clearly complies with all international conventions concerning the treatment of prisoners of war.
20:47 Deputy Minister of Finance: In Ukraine, the minimum wage will not be raised in 2023.
· In 2023, the priority for the state budget will be the fields of defense and security of the country, as well as ensuring all social obligations of the state.
20:22 Voice of America - Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council: The Armed Forces of Ukraine will stop where their interests end.
· "The Armed Forces of Ukraine will stop where our interests end. And the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will end where the end of the Russian half-empire begins", – he writes.
· According to him, now Ukraine's task is to take away from Russia even the desire to think that it can attack neighboring countries.
20:13 The Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine: "Unfortunately, a lot of information about the allegedly liberated settlements is spreading on the networks, which does not correspond to reality", – the statement reads.

o resolve the issue of resumption of hryvnia circulation and treasury service
o determine the start of work of institutions and institutions.
17:58 The Guardian: The British publication explains why Kupiansk is so important in this war.
· This city is located near the front line, which existed before the beginning of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. That is, mastering it is already perceived as a great victory.
· A map published by Finland's Security and Intelligence Service senior analyst Veli-Pekkoi Kivimjaki shows that Kupiansk is the point where the main railway tracks in northeastern Ukraine converge. Thus, its loss complicates Russian supply routes in the entire territory of the northeast they captured.
17:46 Ukrainian Veterans Fund: Veterans will be helped to open their own business.
· The state is ready to finance projects worth up to one million hryvnias (about $27,290). Both the veterans themselves and their family members who are already engaged in entrepreneurial activity will be able to receive assistance.

This issue was one of the most important during the meeting of the defense ministers of the "Ramstein-5" partner countries, - Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov said at the end of the "Ramstein-5".
· According to him, in addition to the issue raised in the area of air defense/anti-missile defense, the fact that Ukraine has already received Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery installations from Germany is also of no small importance.
· The head of the Ministry of Defense emphasized that Ukraine has already received hundreds of 105-mm and 155-mm artillery units and ammunition for them.
· "Ramshtain-5" has a fixed course for long-term support of Ukraine.

14:01 RBC - Minister of Defense: "There is not much time left to fight", - Oleksiy Reznikov is convinced that after a few more even small victories of the Armed Forces at the front, the Russians will start to flee.
· "I am convinced that a few more successes at the front in the form of certain, albeit insignificant, but victories, and the Russian troops will run, and they will, believe me, because today we are destroying their logistics chains, warehouses and so on. And the question will arise: where should they go? And morale... it will be like an avalanche: one line of defense will shake, and it will fall,'' - said Reznikov.

· Ukrainian units are now threatening the town of Kupiansk; its capture would be a significant blow to Russia because it sits on supply routes to the Donbas front line. With Ukrainian operations also continuing in Kherson, the Russian defensive front is under pressure on both its northern and southern flanks.
