Ukraine – 9/10 Sitrep

The last several pages consist of messages that my collaborator is receiving almost continually, about the rapidly evolving Ukrainian offensive in the Kharkiv Region. The latest is that Ukrainian forces are on the outskirts of Lysychansk, occupied by the Russians in early July. At the time, Lysychansk was the last city in Luhansk Oblast held by Ukraine. Lysychansk lies on high ground, across the Svero Donetsk River from Sverodonetsk City. Now that Ukraine has HIMARS and M777 howitzers, if Ukraine re-takes Lysychansk it will be difficult for Russia to hold Sverodonetsk City. Before the latest Russian invasion, and after Luhansk Cithy was lost to Russians and occupiers in 2014, Sverodonetsk City was the temporary administrative capital of Luhansk Oblast. At the very least, Russia’s goal of taking over all of Donbas now seems unattainable.
Where Were the Pundits?
Based on what has transpired over the past few days, both around Kharkiv and Kherson, it seems that the Pundits were wrong in doubting Ukraine’s military capabilities:
· First no one, neither us nor the Pundits, predicted that Ukraine would have the capability of launching 2 major offensives simultaneously, toward Kherson in the South, and below Kharkiv in the Northeast.
· The Pundits minimized the capability of Ukraine to launch even one combined arms offensive, infantry supported by armor and tactical air, and protected by anti-aircraft systems, much less two offensives. Ukraine doesn’t have enough troops, the Pundits said, and they have no experience in undertaking combined arms offensives. Yet, this appears to be exactly what Ukraine is achieving around both Kharkiv and Kherson.
· The Pundits doubted the ability of Ukraine’s High Command to plan and pull off a complex military operation, 2 major offensives covering over 1,000 km. of Ukrainian territory. As Lawrence Freedman comments below, it appears that the 2 offensives were planned in advance by Ukraine’s commanders. As Freedman describes, last Summer Ukraine suckered Russia into moving troops from the Kharkiv Region down to the Right Bank of the Dnieper, around Kherson, where Ukraine proceeded to trap them by blowing up the bridges across the Dnieper and Inhulets Rivers.
A few social media wags are now saying that rather than the Ukrainian Army adopting NATO tactics, that NATO adopt Ukrainian tactics. There is still a long way to go in this war, and no one knows what Russia might do, but one thing is sure. The Pundits need to take ownership of their doubting of Ukraine’s capabilities. I doubt they will.
For me, the most telling description of what is now happening around Kharkiv and Kherson is the appearances of the Ukrainian soldiers, such as the photo in the beginning of Lawrence Freedman’s piece below. They have complete uniforms, and new “kit” as the British like to say. They are ready to fight and, it seems, the Russians aren’t.

Quoting Freedman’s first 3 paragraphs, “As with bankruptcy so with military defeat. What appears to be a long, painful grind can quickly turn into a rout. A supposedly resilient and well-equipped army can break and look for means of escape. This is not unusual in war. We saw it happen with the Afghan Army in the summer of 2021.”
“For the past few days we have been witnessing a remarkable Ukrainian offensive in Kharkiv. We have the spectacle of a bedraggled army in retreat - remnants of a smashed-up convoy, abandoned vehicles, positions left in a hurry, with scattered kit and uneaten food, miserable prisoners, and local people cheering on the Ukrainian forces as they drive through their villages. The speed of advance has been impressive, as tens of square kilometres turn into hundreds and then thousands, and from a handful of villages and towns liberated to dozens. Even as I have been writing this post paragraphs keep on getting overtaken by events.”
“It would of course be premature to pronounce a complete Ukrainian victory in the war because of one successful and unexpected breakthrough. But what has happened over the past few days is of historic importance. This offensive has overturned much of what was confidently assumed about the course of the war. It serves as a reminder that just because the front lines appear static it does not mean that they will stay that way, and that morale and motivation drain away from armies facing defeat, especially when the troops are uncertain about the cause for which they are fighting and have lost confidence in their officers. Who wants to be a martyr when the war is already lost?”
In many of our emails we have suggested that what may look like a stalemate, or a grinding war, may be obscuring the fact that Russia is close to cracking under the pressure of Ukrainian artillery and operations of partisans behind Russian lines, and we suggested this prior to subscribing to Freedman’s blog.
As Freedman points out, perhaps the best source of Russia’s reversals on the battlefield comes from Russian military bloggers who are embedded with Russian formations. Almost all of them are highly critical of the Kremlin’s conduct of the war and of the behavior of Russia’s increasingly clownish propagandists.

Warner Wolf used to be a sports reporter on New York City’s WCBS Television. His most famous line was “Let’s go to the video tape.” So, let’s follow Wolf’s instructions and go to the latest videos covering the war.
“How Ukraine Pulled off the Kharkiv Counteroffensive”/by “Suchominus” – A detailed account of both offensives. This was published yesterday, and Suchominus doesn’t even mention Ukraine’s occupation of Kopiansk and Izyum, and their approach to Lysychansk. Instead, in this video Suchominus predicted that Kopiansk and Izyum would be in Ukraine’s hands within 1 – 2 weeks. Both fell to Ukraine in the past 24 hours. He goes on to say that “Ukraine has Russia by the short & curlies,” because there is no way for Russia to reinforce their forces being thrown back around Kharkiv using troops already inside Ukraine.
“Reporting From Ukraine – How Russian Forces Refuse to Fight”/by “Reporting From Ukraine” – In Kherson, it appears that lack of food and water resulting from the destroyed bridges is causing Russian troops to refuse to fight and they’re abandoning their positions. Ukraine’s occupation of Balakliia may have resulted in Ukraine’s capture of large stocks of Russian ammunition.
The Latest Denys – His latest, posted yesterday, is already out of date. He includes some wonderful footage of Ukrainian soldiers being greeted by civilians in some of the liberated towns.
More Russian Atrocities
Ukrainian investigators are apparently finding evidence of Russian atrocities in Balakliiva, and other liberated towns in the Kharkiv Region. Sadly, this is likely only the beginning.
Donetsk City?
These reports lead me to wonder how long it will be before we’ll see a Ukrainian breakthrough in front of Donetsk City. Russia has made some advances around Pisky, only a short distance from Donetsk City. However, since 2014 Ukraine has built up around 3 rings of defenses in front of Donetsk City. Given the situation in Kharkiv, Kherson, and even Melitopol, Russia may end up sending troops from Donetsk City to try to reinforce positions elsewhere. If Donetsk City falls, Russia’s positions in Ukraine will become increasingly fragile.
Phone Call Intercepts – Interceptions of phone calls between Russian soldiers and their relatives have become very popular in some quarters. Here is a recent one, courtesy of the SBU, Ukraine’s security service.
