“I Left Everything”/Princeton Alumni Weekly
I thank one of our recipients, a graduate of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Advanced International Studies (now the Princeton School of Public & International Affairs), for sending me this article.
Princeton University has sponsored 9 Ukrainian and 5 Russian scholars to come to Princeton for periods up to a year. As the article explains, “Oksana Nesterenko is one of nine Ukrainian visiting scholars who, along with five Russian scholars, are part of a new program created by Princeton to offer refuge to academics affected by Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine. They are working on their research, giving public lectures, and, in a few cases, teaching. Each scholar has a Princeton faculty mentor. Most live in the townhouses and apartments at the University’s Merwick Stanworth complex. Fifteen family members — spouses, children, and a parent — are here with them. Some Ukrainian scholars, though, prefer not to meet the Russians.”
Princeton’s generosity comes with it an object lesson for Princeton – even an influential academic institution like Princeton cannot establish an equivalency between Ukrainian scholars fleeing their homes because of Russian bombs, with Russian scholars leaving their homes because of political differences with Russia’s leadership. Princeton seemed to think this was possible.
The program was the brainchild of a Princeton Professor named Ekaterina Pravilova, a Russian, who has lived in the U.S. since 2006. A planned event to launch the program, for both Russian and Ukrainian scholars was canceled. As one of the Ukrainian scholars Yana Primachenko said, “I do not see any point in these meetings,” Prymachenko says. “We have nothing to talk about. I assume that some of my Ukrainian colleagues expected to hear an apology for what the Russian army is doing in Ukraine. However, Russian scholars position themselves as victims of Putin’s regime. Therefore, they are not ready to take responsibility for what is happening in Russia. And that is the problem. Ukraine is the victim of Russian aggression, but Ukrainians are the fighters. So I believe that we have a completely different perspective and challenges now and in the future. Oil and water do not mix.”
Prymachenko went on to give a scathing indictment of Russian people, especially those Russians who claim to oppose the war, “The passivity of the Russian people is infuriating for many of the Ukrainian scholars.
“We also had a dictator, an authoritarian leader,” referring to Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who was driven from office in 2014 after an uprising by the Ukrainian people. “We went out to huge rallies and stopped him, so I don’t understand why Russians couldn’t do it. Russian people say they were afraid to be arrested, afraid to be beaten. We were beaten. Unarmed people blocked the roads and did not let Russian tanks into their villages and towns. Thousands of people came out to rallies in occupied Kherson. So, we do not buy Russian excuses that they could not stop Putin.”
It is interesting that none of the 5 Russian scholars were quoted for this article. Attempts to establishing equivalency continue, between Ukrainians who flee Russian bombs and Russians who flee political persecution continue at university campuses like Princeton, in professional organizations interested in maintaining the flow of membership dues from Russia, and in the media.
“Faced With Evolving Threats, the U.S. Navy Struggles to Change”/New York Times
The article covers the institutional battle between the Navy’s “establishment,” intent on continue to focus on traditional surface and undersea combatants and those with very little money who are trying to force change on how our Navy will fight future wars. It focuses on the Huntington Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, our largest builder of surface combatants, and their powerful lobbyists, and a small outfit based in Bahrain who are trying to effect change.
“Bobbing in a small bay off the Persian Gulf was a collection of tiny, unmanned vessels, prototypes for the kind of cheaper, easier-to-build and more mobile force that some officers and analysts of naval warfare said was already helping to contain Iran and could be essential to fighting a war in the Pacific.
Operating on a budget that was less than the cost of fuel for one of the Navy’s big ships, Navy personnel and contractors had pieced together drone boats, unmanned submersible vessels and aerial vehicles capable of monitoring and intercepting threats over hundreds of miles of the Persian Gulf, like Iranian fast boats looking to hijack oil tankers.
Now they are pleading for more money to help build on what they have learned.
“It’s an unbelievable capability — we have already tested it for something like 35,000 hours,” said who was the director of the Defense Innovation Unit, which helped set up the unmanned drone tests in Bahrain. “So why are we not fielding that as fast as possible?” Perhaps the contractors working with the group in Bahrain, mostly smaller companies, can hire Haley Barbour, former Governor of Mississippi and former Head of the Republican National Committee, and now prominent lobbyist of Huntington Ingalls Shipyard in his home State of Mississippi. Unfortunately, they probably cannot afford him.
What is happening in Bahrain is like what has already happened in Ukraine, allowing Ukraine to take effective control much of the western Black Sea with surface and undersea drones. The latest “Reporting from Ukraine” contains examples of Ukraine’s successes in the Western Black Sea. If Ukraine can secure control of the Kinburn Spit, they can likely open the port of Mykolaiv for grain exports.
In a perfect world and no disrespect to the work going on in Bahrain, the U.S. Navy should outsource its seaborne drone work to Ukraine. While they’re at it, the Pentagon might consider adopting some of Ukraine’s procurement policies that are proving a success in Ukraine’s drone warfare – design/fly/buy.
“New Brigade Bears Brunt of Russian Onslaught in Kharkiv Oblast”
This is a story about one of Ukraine newly formed brigades, the 32nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, that received training in Germany, and are now fighting to hold off 100,000 Russian troops trying to re-take the part of Kharkiv Oblast that Russia lost last year. Many members of the 32nd believe that the training they received in Germany aren’t entirely relevant to how the war is being fought in Ukraine.
“All the infantrymen of the 32nd brigade had been to Germany to train to NATO standards for three weeks.
This was an obvious solution. Some of the soldiers here had been excited to go, thinking the training would help them become effective.
In many ways, it had been.
The infantry praised the physical training. Press officer Andriy Smiyan and his aide Oleksandr highlighted the life-saving power of tactical medicine training, widely practiced in the West but virtually unknown in Soviet-style armies.
The training also comes with a full set of gear for each soldier.
However, the same soldiers who spoke to the Kyiv Independent didn't hide their scorn about how the training prepared them for a war that doesn't exist in Ukraine. They said the NATO officers don't understand the reality on the ground.
"A NATO infantryman knows he's supported and can advance with the confidence that there's a high likelihood that he won't be killed or maimed," Ihor said.
The NATO way of war calls for massive preparatory airstrikes and artillery barrages and demining before the infantry is sent in, he added.
It usually doesn't work that way in Ukraine.”
“Troops said they sometimes struggle to apply NATO small unit tactics because there often isn't enough cover to do so.
Zgurets said that the instructors in Germany put a lot of emphasis on teaching urban combat. But the skills of how to smoke an enemy out from a trench, how to build an assault group, and coordinate it with artillery and drone support were lacking.
The style of battle in the Ukrainian countryside, blending World War I trench combat and 21st-century tech and tactics, are only seen in Ukraine — they are outside NATO's wheelhouse.
Furthermore, the translators that are used often lack a military background and fail to convey accurate commands or responses between instructors and trainees, Zgurets added.
He said that it would be helpful for some of these instructors to visit Ukraine.
"European countries can correct their training," Zgurets said. "There has been a mutual understanding of experiences and concerns, and this is the moment when they can be cleared away."
After Ukraine’s victory, troops from Germany and other current NATO members will be sent to Ukraine, for training by Ukrainians. To some extent this was happening before the war started at Yavoriv Training Center near Lv’iv, where reports described how Western trainers were receiving as much training from Ukrainians, experienced in fighting Russians in Donbas, than they were receiving from the Western Trainers.
News From The Battlefield
In the “Latest Denys,” at 2:35 into the video, he speaks about the Russian helicopter pilot who flew his helicopter into Ukraine and turned it over to Ukraine’s military. It was a planned operation. The pilot’s family got out of first. 2 Russian army soldiers who were aboard the helicopter tried to resist. They were both liquidated. The pilot, reunited with his family, got $500,000 for his efforts. Pilots of Russian fixed wing aircraft get $1 million.
“Reporting From Ukraine,” at 1:35 into the video, contains an amazing account of the efforts made by Ukraine to successfully recover a man overboard while at the same time engaging Russian aircraft. Finding a man overboard is one of the most difficult things to accomplish in any navy. In the U.S. Navy, it is a major part of training that Officers of the Deck have to go through, where man overboard drills are conducted without any notification, usually by the commanding officer telling the senior enlisted man to throw a life jacket over the side and setting off an alarm. It is a small example of Ukraine’s boat handling skills and the value they place on human life that they succeeded in saving this crew member after 12 hours in the water. It was also another example of the value of drones that were used to keep track of the man.
“Reporting From Ukraine” also covers how Ukraine has attained air control over Western Kherson Oblast and, by extension, Western Crimea, by knocking out significant Russian air defense assets in both locations.
