“Dispelling a Myth About Aid to Ukraine”/National Review
The myth, referred to in the Title, is that Europe was not doing its “fair share” in providing aid to Ukraine. As the article points out this is true of some European countries, but not Europe as a whole.
Excerpts from the article:
· “Europe collectively is sending $2.22 for every dollar the United States has sent — dispelling the myth that America is getting stuck with the check for helping Ukraine.”
· “The estimated value of U.S. military aid remains significantly larger than that of European military aid, but European allies have compensated with more humanitarian and financial aid, as well as a willingness to house more refugees.”
· “One month ago, this newsletter took an in-depth look at which countries were doing the most to help Ukraine, using figures updated to May 31. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy’s database and analysis recently updated its figures to include aid provided and new commitments made through July 31, revealing that Europe’s share of the load has increased considerably over that two-month span.”
· “The updated figures make the argument that the U.S. is somehow getting screwed, or that Europeans are shirking their commitments, even less accurate than it was before. We can argue about whether the U.S. should send more aid or not (spoiler alert: we should), but the argument that the Europeans are dodging their duties and letting Americans pick up the tab just doesn’t align with reality.”
· “it is still the case that the value of what the U.S. is donating in military equipment — a list updated to September 8 can be found here — estimated to be worth $43.9 billion, still ranks first by a wide margin. Germany ranks second, having sent military equipment estimated to be worth $18.2 billion.”
· “As for the argument that the U.S. isn’t carefully keeping track of what’s being sent to Ukraine and how it’s being used, the U.S. government established its Ukraine Oversight Interagency Working Group in June 2022, four months after the war started. As of the end of March 2023, the federal government has more than 160 personnel from 20 U.S. oversight organizations tracking and auditing the weapons, ammunition, equipment, and money sent to Ukraine, personnel who are primarily pulled from the Offices of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. As of March, investigations “have not yet substantiated significant waste, fraud, or abuse,” although it’s proven difficult to monitor weapons at the final stages, near the front lines.”
My emphasis.
I don’t expect that this article will be on the reading lists of Congresspeople like Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), or Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia). These people, and others who use the narrative of Europe not “doing enough” to aid Ukraine, as a reason for curtailing U.S. aid to Ukraine, strike me as people who don’t appreciate being disturbed by the facts.
Ukraine’s Growing IT Prowess
In his Sitrep below, Bohdan has some interesting statistics on the growing influence of information technology (IT) on Ukraine’s GDP. I encourage you all to take a look.
Ukraine is no longer an economy dominated by “smokestack industries” like steel production, or agricultural production. IT has become a major factor in Ukraine’s economic growth.
News From the Battlefield
Once again, the focus is on Ukrainian pummeling of air defense, naval installations, ammunition depots, and command & control facilities throughout Crimea. Russia appears to have limited ability to stop it.
“Reporting From Ukraine” describes yesterday’s missile and drone attacks in Crimea. What strikes me is how Ukraine is using drones and cruise missiles in a manner that complements each other. Ukraine seems to be starting to claim credit for sabotage attacks inside Russia, such as yesterday’s attack on the airfield near Moscow, an installation that appears to be used by high Russian Government officials. If this is the case, then it becomes the equivalent of an attack against Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., home of Air Force I used by the President, and other planes used by senior government officials.
“Uncertain Triumph: Ukraine picks apart Russia's best air defenses in Crimea”/Igor Kossov, Kyiv Independent
The word “Triumph” refers to the code name of the Russian S-400 antiaircraft missile system. Thought to be impregnable, Ukraine has now destroyed several S-400 installations in Crimea, leaving Crimea open to further Ukrainian drone & cruise missile attacks. As a likely tweak against the U.S. and NATO, Turkey recently took delivery of an S-400 system. I wonder how President Erdogan feels about this decision today, considering how Ukraine has taken down the S-400 installations in Crimea.
“Satellite images show aftermath of strike on Russian command post in Crimea on 20 September”/Ukrainska Pravda
This was a command post for the Russian Black Sea Fleet located near Sevastopol. Using another U.S. equivalent, it would be as if there was an attack against the U.S. 2nd Fleet Headquarters, located near Norfolk, Virginia.

"Many years of talks and projects on reforming the UN must become a process of reforming the UN. The use of the veto is what needs reform, and it can be a key reform. The one that restores the strength of the UN Charter. The veto must not serve as a weapon for those obsessed with hatred and war".
"The African Union should be here permanently. Asia deserves a wider permanent representation. Germany deserves a place among the permanent members of the Security Council. Latin America should be represented here - permanently. And the countries of the Pacific Ocean."
Volodymyr Zelenskyi named the main steps for reforming the UN:
The first step is to give the UN General Assembly a real opportunity to override the veto. Provided that two-thirds of the votes, which will reflect the will of the nations from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Pacific Ocean region, are obtained - a global qualified majority - the veto should actually be overcome
The second step is that the UN Security Council should be fully accountable to the nations of the world. At the same time, the circle of permanent members of the Security Council should reflect modernity.
