Benefit Concert at the Kennedy Center
Below is an announcement for a benefit concert for Ukraine, taking place on October 18th at the Kennedy Center. Those of you who live in the Washington, DC Metro Area are encouraged to attend. In addition, those of you who don’t live in or near Washington, DC are encouraged to forward this announcement to friends and colleagues who do.
This should not be seen as just a nice thing to do to support Ukraine. One of Ukraine’s many talents is music. I have attended numerous performances at the Kyiv Opera House, both opera and ballet, as well as at Kyiv’s Symphony Hall. This occasion should be seen as an opportunity to enjoy great music played by extremely talented musicians, as well as to support a good cause.
The announcement is below -
On behalf of the Chopivsky Family Foundation, it is our honor to announce the Benefit Concert for Ukraine to be held at the country's leading national stage - The Kennedy Center Concert Hall on October 18 at 7:30PM. The Benefit Concert features joint performance by American violinist, Grammy Award-winner and global superstar, Joshua Bell, and the internationally acclaimed New Era Orchestra from Ukraine.
Please visit our event website for details, including information on our distinguished Event Partners and Sponsors, program, and tickets:
https://benefitconcertukraine.org/
Please support Ukraine by buying tickets to the Benefit Concert and spreading the word about this outstanding event among your communities, colleagues, friends, and family!
As Ukraine heads into the winter and amid escalation of the brutal war, the Ukrainian nation is fighting Russian invaders with extraordinary courage and determination and needs our support more than ever at this decisive time. The beneficiary of the funds raised is United24
http://www.u24.gov.ua/
– a Deloitte audited initiative, launched by President Zelensky as a primary venue for collecting charitable donations for Ukraine. We are immensely grateful to the Sponsors of the Benefit Concert, and we invite you to join this illustrious group! To learn more please visit

The Benefit Concert is also a platform for supporting Ukrainian culture. It will be a world-class artistic event, marking a new pinnacle - the first joint performance in the United States - in the long-term creative collaboration between Joshua Bell and New Era Orchestra, which over the years Ukrainian audiences have enjoyed at concerts in Kyiv and Odesa. In a noble gesture of solidarity, Joshua Bell and New Era Orchestra are donating their entire performance in support of Ukraine.
Joshua Bell, in his career spanning four decades, has performed for three U.S. Presidents and with every major orchestra in the world, to become the most celebrated American violinist of our time. Bell has recorded soundtracks for multiple films, including Academy Award winner, The Red Violin. Bell plays on the famed 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin.
New Era Orchestra (NEO), the leading independent chamber orchestra in Ukraine, was founded in 2007 by its Artistic Director and Conductor, Maestro Tatiana Kalinichenko. The Orchestra has also performed with such global stars as the U.S.’s Sarah Chang and France’s Gautier Capuçon, and in 2018 became the first Ukrainian ensemble to perform in the official program of "Septembre Musical Montreux-Vevey,” one of the oldest and most prestigious music festivals in Europe. The Chopivsky Family Foundation, which is the organizer and the Platinum Sponsor of the Benefit Concert, has been proudly supporting Ukrainian culture and NEO for many years.
2022 would have been the 15th anniversary celebration for NEO, with many festive musical events planned long in advance. Instead, 2022 became a year when NEO’s musicians have joined the heroic fight of the Ukrainian nation for freedom and democracy on the cultural front.
As Ukraine’s President Zelensky said: “When democracy wins in one country, it wins all over the world. When freedom is defended in one country, it is defended all over the world.” The United States is the biggest ally of Ukraine, and the artistic collaboration between Joshua Bell and NEO exemplifies the historic ever-strengthening partnership between the United States and Ukraine in Ukraine’s resolute fight defending freedom and democracy for the world.
We sincerely thank you for your support of Ukraine and look forward to seeing you at the Benefit Concert
Winter
The pundits are now talking about Winter, and how Ukraine must take as much ground as possible before Winter sets in, when fighting will slow. Don’t count on it.
The 6 weeks between early November and mid-December may well be difficult because of soft ground and muddy roads. After that the ground freezes, making the movement of armor an easier task. Around Kherson it is likely that the ground will stay muddy through the entire Winter. However further north, in Donbas, the ground will likely freeze, and stay frozen until mid to late February. Four factors to consider:
· Debaltseve, 2015 – Ukraine’s biggest defeat in the war against Russia took place in January and February, over frozen ground. Ukraine’s defeat at Debaltseve solidified Russia’s hold over the portion of Donbas that Russia and it proxies held until that time, and the defeat at Debaltseve led to the infamous Minsk II Agreement.
· The Battle for Kyiv, 2022 – The same pundits who now predict that the war will slow down during the Winter, 8 months ago were saying that Russia made a critical mistake when they delayed their invasion date until late February 2022, because frozen ground would be helpful to movements of Russian armor. In February 2022 the pundits were right. By late February the ground was thawing, forcing Russian columns to use the paved roads, where they were chopped up by Ukrainian forces, including regular Army, territorial defense, and volunteers.
· Ukrainians Don’t Let Winter Slow Them Down (No. 1) – Ukraine is making more use of light armored vehicles instead of tanks, to give Ukraine a speed advantage that they use to either encircle towns like Lyman or to chase retreating Russians who, in their effort to get away, end up abandoning their tanks and vehicles to the Ukrainians.
· Ukrainians Don’t Let Winter Slow Them Down (No. 2) – In early March 2006, I visited a cultural park outside of Kyiv, called Peregova, for a “Spring Festival.” Instead of Spring, it was a driving snowstorm, but that didn’t stop Ukrainian families enjoying outdoor picnics, taking troika rides, and engaging in other outdoor activities, all despite the blizzard and high winds. It was then that I realized why Napoleon was defeated in 1812. Of course, this also applies to Russians, except this time Ukrainians are better clothed, better trained and better armed. Peregova is somewhat like Historic Deerfield, Massachusetts, the subject of a raid in 1704 against the English settlers by the French and their Native American allies. There are similarities to current events in Ukraine.
Murder of Daria Dugina
Reportedly, the United States has determined that a “unit of the Government of Ukraine” was responsible for carrying out the assassination of Daria Dugina, daughter of the Russian reactionary propagandist Alexander Dugin. Depending on one’s definition of a “unit of the Government of Ukraine,” this might be true, but Dugina’s murder may not have been ordered by a recognized Ukrainian Government agency.
As previous emails have reported, Ukrainian 5th Columnists have been operating in Russia since at least early 2014, after the end of the Revolution of Dignity. Much of their activity has been directed at minority groups, in areas like draft resistance, cultural and linguistic identity, and other activities designed to diminish the influence of the Russian Government. It is reasonable to assume that these activities have only increased, especially since the recent reserve call-up.
It is quite possible that an individual or group that has been engaged in anti-Russian activity saw Dugin as a target of opportunity, and they acted without any prompting or orders from the Ukrainian Government. This may also be true of explosions at military installations and critical infrastructure inside Russia, such as Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don. Look for these actions to continue.
Bila Tserkva
Earlier this week a Russian drone supplied by Iran destroyed a building in the city of Bila Tserkva, approximately 50 miles south of Kyiv. I have close friends who live in or near Bila Tsirkva. The destroyed building was being used a barracks for the local territorial defense force, largely made up of residents of Bila Tsirkva. The drone was a Shahed-136, described here. 12 drones were launched against Bila Tsirkva. 6 were either shot down or intercepted. Ukraine has been able to capture at least 1 Shahed-136 intact, and is busy doing reverse engineering. The drown flies low and is driven by a noisy piston engine. Ukrainians are being told that if they hear the drone in flight to contact local emergency services.
These drones have a long range, and they can reach as far as Kyiv. In addition to fixed military installations, civilian infrastructure such as electrical substations are also prime targets.
One reason why Ukraine wants the United States to supply them with the longer range version of the HIMARS rocket, is to allow them to hit the air base in Crimea from where the drones are
News From the Battlefield
Today’s “Reporting From Ukraine” focuses exclusively on Kherson. He mentions that there are now approximately 45,000 Ukrainian troops engaged along the 150km. line in Kherson. That means that they outnumber Russian defenders by almost 2:1, with Russia having little possibility to re-supply. He also mentions Ukraine’s use of light armored vehicles, as opposed to tanks giving, as stated earlier, Ukraine a speed advantage over retreating Russians.
The “Latest Denys” covers Kherson but also Donbas, where Ukraine is getting close to capturing Svatova, yet another crossroads city bisected by a river. What jumps out to me from looking at Denys’ map is the following:
· Ukraine doesn’t seem terribly threatened by continuing Russian attacks to the immediate south, around Bakhmut. If they were, they likely wouldn’t be pulling troops out to launch attacks against Lysychansk.
· After Ukraine liberates Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk, it seems possible that they could pivot to the right, and trap and attack Russian troops attacking Bakhmut from behind. Russian troops here belong to the Wagner Group. If this is even possible, trapping these Russian troops could cause the whole Russian line in front of Donetsk City to collapse.
The loss of Kherson City combined with neutralizing the Wagner Group could be devastating for Russia’s war effort, not to mention their morale.

· NABU writes that it does not know where Shevchenko is, so the arrest order was left at his place of work, namely at the National Bank of Ukraine.
12:12 Operational Command South: As of 11:00 a.m., 2 Shahed-136 KAME and 1 Mohajer-6 UAV were destroyed in southern Ukraine.
The table below illustrates the involvement of Ukrainian society in its military, support of internally displaced people, and humanitarian aid. I don’t know the percent of Ukraine’s military spending that is supported by crowd-funding and other forms of support, but it’s substantial (something Ukraine’s Western supporters should keep in mind). In 2015, during the fighting for control of the Donetsk Airport, civilians delivered most of the supplies delivered to the Ukrainian defenders. To make deliveries, they drove through territory occupied by separatists and Russian troops. We saw the same thing take place last April, in the fighting around Kyiv.
People whom I know personally, who had to leave their homes due to Russian shelling, were taken in by people whom they never met. In Ukraine, this is routine.
The symbiotic relationship between the Armed Forces and ordinary Ukrainians including civil society groups, is a major reason why Ukraine will win the war. Russia has no answer for this relationship.
