News From the Battlefield
Never Underestimate Russia – In the Summer of 2014 the reconstituted Ukrainian Army nearly pushed the Russians and their proxies out of Donbas. At the time, I was in Kyiv. I recall everyone assuming that the fighting in Donbas would soon be over. And then in mid-September, seemingly out of the blue Ilovaisk happened, which was a major military reversal for Ukraine. 5 months later Ukraine suffered another military reversal, at Debaltseve, followed by the signing of the infamous Minsk II agreement.
There was mentioned in the Daily Telegraph Channel on YouTube that Russia is gathering forces opposite Kharkiv. A friend told me that his son’s unit is being moved from the East to an area north of Kyiv, opposite Belarus. It is wrong to think that Russia is unable to launch new offensives in these areas. It is good to see Ukraine taking precautions.
The Bridges – I said in a recent email that the war is a war of rivers, Dnieper, Oskil, Inhulets, Southern Bug, Sversky Donetsk, and many others. As shown in this video, about Ukraine destroying bridges in the Kherson Region to block Russian re-supply and Russian retreat, the war is also a war of bridges.
This video mentions that Russia is repairing the Nova Kahovka Bridge, across the Nova Kahovka Dam on the Dnieper River. Ukraine destroyed a portion of the bridge that goes over a lock & ship channel next to the Nova Kahovka Dam, but without destroying the dam. From the photo, it seems as if the Russians are filling in the portion of the ship channel that was located below the bridge. Before the war, barge traffic on the Dnieper had become increasingly important, as means of shipping bulk commodities. After the war, clearing this channel will become a major priority.
“Reporting From Ukraine” & “The Latest Denys” – Both videos cover the latest Ukrainian advances in Northern Kherson Oblast, and Denys also covers continuing Ukrainian advances across Kharkiv Oblast and into Kherson. “Reporting From Ukraine” provides more detailed coverage, with Denys taking a broader overview. Both are valuable.
American Coverage – I don’t think the coverage in the U.S. media focuses on the broader picture, showing how bad the Russian situation now appears to be in Ukraine. Today, Ukraine is undertaking 2 offensives, in both Kherson and Kharkiv/Donbas, where both are yielding substantial liberated territory. Russia/Wagner Group attacks in front of Donesk are stalled, with likely heavy loss of life. In Zaporizhia, Russians are victims of a war of 1,000 cuts from Ukrainian partisans. Instead, American coverage seems to focus on one region at a time.
What Russia is facing now in Ukraine makes the risk of Russian incursions around Kharkiv and from Belarus north of Kyiv even greater. I think a new incursion is more likely than Russia using a nuclear weapon.
