Developments on the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine,” and The Latest Denys both discuss recent Ukrainian successes in Kherson, with Denys also speaking about Ukraine’s continuing offensive in Donbas. As he usually does, compared to Denys “Reporting from Ukraine” provides a more granular analysis of developments in Kherson. In Denys’ Report, not the picture of the head of Elon Musk transposed onto a body dressed in a Russian uniform.
Later in this email, there is a report of an electricity outage in Mykolaiv Oblast. This is likely an effort by the Russians to slow resupply of Ukrainian troops now on the offensive on the Right Bank of the Dnieper, in Kherson Oblast.
Looking at the situation more broadly the conditions for a major Russian defeat seem apparent, at least to my un-educated eye. Russians are getting rolled up in Kharkiv/Luhansk, they are making little progress in Donetsk Oblast, in front of both Bakhmut and Donetsk City, and they face an increasing risk of exposure from Ukrainians attacking across Luhansk. They are falling back in Kherson, and they are suffering death from a thousand cuts from partisans operating in Zaporizhia, especially around Melitopol.
The Wagner Group is primarily operating in Donetsk, and they are under an entirely separate command structure than either the regular Russian Army or the Chechens. Ex the prison inmates who are fighting alongside Wagner, they are arguably the most proficient formation that Russia has. Wagner’s talents seem to be wasted in Donetsk, and they may run the risk of being cut off.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine 12:00 noon October 3 to 12:00 noon October 4, 2022
I promised when I started this news roundup that I wouldn’t burden you with requests for assistance. I am making an exception to that.
I want to call your attention to an organization, Ukraine Aid, and its founder, Dennis De Santis. In response to the Russian invasion, Dennis, with his daughter Adrienne and a few friends, immediately self-financed the start-up of an incorporated non-profit in Virginia, received IRS 501 (c) 3 status, and began responding to the needs of volunteers in the Territorial Defense Forces and Ukrainians affected by the war. This all-volunteer group, using their own resources, and covering their own expenses has already shipped $70,000 of material assistance to Ukraine, with another $15,000 en route. Their shipments have included helmets, protective vests, tactical gear, shovels, combat trauma first aid kits, thermal blankets, and hundreds of pounds of medical supplies to hospitals.
I first met Dennis 30 years ago when he was working on an USAID technical assistance team. We worked together and separately on assistance projects over that period and have become friends.
I had dinner with Dennis in Kyiv last week. He was here to check on friends, his procurement and delivery network, and his beneficiaries.
If you are looking for a capable and effective organization that makes good use of your donated dollar to support Ukraine, visit www.ukraineaid.group, and donate.
I endorse the comments about Dennis DeSantis. Although not as long as my colleague, I have known Dennis for several years. Among other things, at his own expense Dennis has come over to Ukraine to serve as an election observer. This is not an easy task, as it involves being locked up in a secure room, often without access to restrooms, while the counting of ballots is going on. The last time I can remember, Dennis was in the secure room until 3AM, the morning after election day. I wish the counting of ballots in the U.S. is done as securely and professionally as what takes place in Ukraine. Perhaps Ukrainians can return the favor and come to the U.S. to serve as observers in our elections.

Anyone who is confused about Russia’s claim to Crimea should take 50 minutes and watch Timothy Snyder’s 7th lecture of his course about Ukraine. He talks about the rise of Moscovy (today’s Russia). There is no legitimate “claim” to Crimea. Khrushchev’s “mistake” seemed well thought-out. Crimea wasn’t physically joined to the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic.
