This is a lecture that Kurkov recently gave in Iceland, the 2022 Halldor Laxness Lecture. If anyone has any doubts about why Ukraine is fighting, I recommend reading Kurkov’s lecture.
When reading Kurkov’s lecture, I was reminded about the series of movies made in 1943 during WW-II, collectively called “Why We Fight.” The Director was Frank Capra. The Co-Director was a Ukrainian, Anatole Litvak. This is the trailer for the “Battle of Russia,” one of the movies in the “Why We Fight” series, primarily covering the Siege of Leningrad. Perhaps the Russians should re-learn their own history, especially relating to what happens when an aggressor targets civilian infrastructure. Civilians don’t get mad; they get even.

News From the Battlefield
The Latest Denys reports that almost 1,000 Russian soldiers were killed yesterday, about half of them in front of Donetsk City during an attack by around 200 Russian armored vehicles. According to Denys, the Russians were chopped to pieces by Ukrainian artillery. His other news includes:
· Russian conscripts pouring sand into their vehicles, in order to avoid joining the front lines.
· Russia has abandoned the Chernobaivka Airfield, near Kherson City, and they are transferring heavy weapons to the other bank of the Dnieper River.
· Russians carrying off washing machines, likely for the computer chips contained therein. I wonder if Russia has a version of the Maytag repairman.
“Reporting From Ukraine” describes several encounters taking place in Northern and Central Luhansk Oblast, in front of Bakhmut, and in front of Donetsk City, including the area where Denys reported that 500 Russian soldiers were killed. Ukraine is in the process of cutting off the road to Kremina in 2 places. A separate report states that Russians are sowing mines in front of Sievierodonetsk, the city that the Russians took late last June.
