The Ammonia Pipeline
It seems like Russia is developing a menu of “false flag” operations for which to blame Ukraine. Currently the menu includes blowing the Nova Khahovka Dam and now, detonating a “dirty bomb.” Why not add breaching an ammonia pipeline to the menu?
The ammonia pipeline in question runs from Togliatti, Russia, to Odesa. It has been unused since the start of Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine, and for good reason. A breach of an operational ammonia pipeline, and the resulting ammonia cloud, would likely cause the deaths of thousands of innocent people. In terms of loss of life, it would likely make exploding a dirty bomb look like child’s play.
However, according to this article from the Odessa Journal, dated on October 21, 2022, the UN and Russia are discussing re-opening the ammonia pipeline transiting the territory of Ukraine, as a means to mitigate the current world-wide fertilizer shortage. From the article, it is unclear if, or how, Ukraine is participating in these negotiations. It would seem like both Russia and the UN hope that Ukraine would acquiesce to the re-opening of the pipeline, as a condition of continuing Ukrainian grain exports.
There are only two ammonia pipelines in the world of this size. The other is in the United States running between Minnesota and Texas and Oklahoma.
This seems like Russia trying to point another gun at Ukraine’s head, this time with the effective support of the United Nations.
Flooding
The Latest Denys starts off with a map, showing the area that would potentially be flooded by Russia blowing the Nova Khahovka Dam. Note that the major flooding would take place on the Left Bank of the Dnieper River. Kherson City, on the Right Bank and sitting on a bluff overlooking the Dnieper River, would be unaffected except for an industrial and port area next to the river. The flooding would likely have the effect of forcing Russian troops on the Left Bank further back from the river.
News From the Battlefield
Denys reports that Ukraine has managed to push Russian troops, consisting mostly of Wagner Group mercenaries and prisoners, 2 km. back from Bakhmut. “Reporting From Ukraine” describes fighting on the Right Bank of the Dnieper River, in Kherson Oblast. It seems as if Russia is conducting a “fighting retreat” from the Right Bank, giving them time to loot Kherson City, where they have ordered the evacuation of civilians, and allowing them time to dismantle telephone and internet infrastructure.
