Reviewing the Bidding
Everywhere one looks, Russia seems to be stymied in the Ukraine Theater. However, Tom Friedman, in his latest column in the NY Times, calls for an “off-ramp,” and the Pope calls for negotiation. In his sermon today the Dean of Grace Church in New York City, the Reverend J. Donald Waring compares recent cases of wanton violence on the streets of New York City to Putin’s wanton violence in Ukraine. Indeed, it seems that criminal gangs claiming “turf” in American cities like New York or Los Angeles, or groups of criminals breaking into stores on Union Square in San Francisco, aren’t much different from Putin claiming that 4 Ukrainian oblasts are Russian territory “forever.”
It is important to understand that Ukraine is now fighting against 3 different Russian forces, all 3 under independent command: The regular Russian Army under the command of Vladimir Putin; Wagner Group under the command of Yevgeny Prigozhin; the Chechins under the command of Ramzan Kadyrov. They operate independently of each other. As will be seen, this compounds the problem Russia is facing in defending their positions in Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, appears to have been sidelined. He appeared last Friday, at Putin’s speech in the Kremlin announcing the annexation of 4 Ukrainian oblasts into Russia, dressed in a dark suit instead of his preferred military uniform.
Overall, the Russians seem to be either falling back, as in the Northeast, going nowhere as in Dontetsk, trapped, as in Kherson, or harassed, as around Melitopol. With yesterday’s fall of Lyman, formerly occupied by units of the Russian Army, much of the rest of Luhansk Oblast that Russia temporarily occupied after February 24th will likely be re-taken. This includes the twin cities of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk that Russia took last June with a large loss of life. Direct rail and road links between Luhansk Ciity and Belgorod, Russia, will be severed.
According to the video “Reporting from Ukraine,” the new Russian conscripts made an appearance in front of Lyman. It was a part of a failed effort by Russia break the Lyman encirclement.
In Donetsk, the Wagner Group forces that includes paroled prisoners, continue to attempt to break through Ukrainian defensive position with little to show for their efforts. Putin, or even a senior Russian general officer with any intelligence, might’ve at least considered re-deploying these troops to either defend Lyman or try to free the Russians trapped on the Right Bank of the Dnieper River, in Kharson. Instead, as portrayed in the movie “Animal House,” in Donetsk the Russians willingly march into a blind alley ending with a brick wall, led by a strange individual in a brown overcoat known as “Stork.”
Around Melitopol, and the area between Mariupol and Kherson Ukraine, after executing a feint that resulted in the redeployment of Russian troops from the Northeast making it easier for Ukraine to re-take territory there, are leaving the Russian troops to the tender mercies of the Partisans who continue to blow up Russian military assets and kill individual Russian soldiers and collaborators.
In Kherson, on the Right Bank of the Dnieper, 25,000 Russian troops remain trapped. They are probably the best soldiers in the Russian Army, they’ve had time to dig in and, at the time Ukraine blew up the Dnieper bridges, they were well supplied. The supplies will eventually run out.
News From the Battlefield
Lawrence Freedman – Freedman’s Substack blog includes 2 maps, one of Ukraine showing the parts of the 4 oblasts that Russia claims it has “annexed” that are in fact controlled by Ukraine. As “Report From Ukraine” and Denys both argue, the fall of Lyman opens Luhansk to 2 Ukrainian advances, one toward Lysychansk/Sievierodonetsk, and the other to the north, closer to the Russian border.
Times Radio – London Times reporter Askold Krurshelnycky discusses the implications of the liberation of Lyman. There are also interesting clips of demining operations and wrecked Russian equipment. According to reports, there were anywhere between 2,000 and 5,000 Russian troops in Lyman. It is unclear how many were captured or killed, or how many escaped the encirclement.
“Reporting From Ukraine & The Latest Denys – “Reporting From Ukraine” describes the botched Russian effort to break the encirclement of Lyman, and how the fall of Lyman sets up Ukraine for further advances to the south and east, toward Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk.
The Latest Denys – He also describes the liberation of Lyman and details of the encirclement. His tactical map shows how close Ukraine is to Lysychansk and Sievierdonetsk. Loss of these two cities will be a severe psychological blow to Russia. Sievierodonetsk was the capital of Luhansk Oblast, after Luhansk City was captured in 2014.
