Victoria Zamchenko
Victoria Zamchenko, along with her husband Bohdan and their unborn child, was killed in one of the drone strikes that hit Kyiv in the early morning hours last Monday. They lived in a 120-year-old residential building on Zhylanska Street, in Central Kyiv. The building has survived WW-I, the Russian Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, but it didn’t survive Russia’s latest atrocity.
Victoria was the sommelier at GoodWine, a gourmet market in Kyiv owned by Sergey Gusovsky, a friend of mine. In addition to GoodWine, Sergey owns several restaurants in Kyiv, the most famous of which, at least for expats, is Pantagruel located on Zoloti Verota Square (Golden Gate), the location of the main gate to ancient Kyiv. I spent many enjoyable afternoons on their patio. Pantagruel used to have a resident cat, who was killed many years ago in a kitchen fire at the restaurant. Regular patrons commissioned a bronze bust of the cat, with a regal bearing and a long full tail. The bust is located outside the restaurant. Stroking the cat’s tail has become a popular activity for tourists visiting the Golden Gate.
When someone is killed so senselessly, as Victora was, having had encounters with that person as I did with Victoria, most recently selecting wine for my 70th Birthday, makes her death that much more difficult to accept. GoodWine was the first wine store in Kyiv to sell California wines which, as a 5th Generation Californian, was very welcome. Victoria treated all her customers with the same care, whether you were looking for the less expensive wine, as I usually was, or the finest varietals.
Victoria, rest in peace with your husband and child. We, especially your customers, won’t forget.
Tim Ash on Ukraine’s Reconstruction
Tim Ash is the leading expert on Ukraine’s financial matters. This is his very detailed Substack analysis on how Ukraine’s reconstruction can be addressed. Some random thoughts:
· Matters like reconstruction always spawn high-level conferences held in fancy places, like the one a few months ago held in Lugano, Switzerland. A couple of years before Russia’s latest invasion, an investment conference was held in Mariupol. They should do it again, so participants can see the damage Russia has done to Mariupol. Another possibility in Kharkiv, which has suffered from major destruction. With Kharkiv it won’t be necessary to wait for liberation, as is unfortunately the case with Mariupol. Of course, another candidate is Bucha.
· Participants need to leave any patronizing attitude toward Ukraine at the door. Of course, there is corruption in Ukraine, lack of judicial independence, and many other issues. However, every day on the battlefield Ukrainians show their leadership skills and, as they like to say at business schools, their decision-making under uncertainty.
· Ukrainians aren’t waiting for the high-level conferences, to get on with rebuilding. As the Latest Denys shows, at 12:15 into the video, Ukrainians aren’t waiting around for the successor to the Marshall Plan to rebuild. Last night, a friend of mine told me that the occupants of her building have already raised enough money to rebuild the damaged parts of the building in Kyiv where she lives.
News From the Battlefield
Reporting from Ukraine describes yet another battle in Kharkiv/Luhansk, this time near the Russian border. At some point, I think that the outcome of these battles will cause the Russian Army to crack. This may already be happening in Kherson where, as Denys reports, there are Russian troops and civilian officials trying to evacuate across the Dnieper, and out of danger from advancing Ukrainian troops.
One of the effects of Russian evacuation of the Right Bank of the Dnieper, will likely be Ukraine turning off the water tap to Crimea. Crimea gets most of its water via the North Crimea Canal, which starts at the Nova Khahovka Dam.
10/20 Sitrep (my comment in bold face)
“Looks like the Orcs (a very derogatory term for Russians) are running from Kherson, but, according to Mykoliav RMA - VItaliy Kim, they are also building artillery pits aimed at the city.”
Another term now in favor to refer to Russians is “Horde,” as in Mogol Horde. Russia is the direct descendent of the Mongol “Golden Horde.”
