The Drone Attacks
Judging by Russia’s recent focus on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, Russia seems to have come to the realization that they have lost the war. Up until now Russia seemed to have avoided hitting targets like power plants, because they would be necessary when Russia drove out the “Fascists” and took over Ukraine. Now that Russia evidently realizes that they will eventually lose, everything is fair game. According to remarks made by President Zelenskyy, as of yesterday approximately 30% of Ukraine’s power generation capacity has been either partly or completely destroyed.
News From the Battlefield
Looking at the last 2 days of “Reporting From Ukraine,” Ukraine seems to be preparing for another eastward push into Luhansk Oblast. His latest describes an encounter in the northern part of a line running north from Lyman. He describes fighting along a ravine, running north and south, and separating the forces. Those who think of Ukraine as this flat, almost featureless, expanse of productive farmland, should be disabused of this notion by the accounts of “Reporting From Ukraine.” Most of Ukraine reminds me of the region of the U.S. embracing the States of Iowa and Wisconsin, rolling country with productive farmland, containing features that can be used for military advantage, as is the case today in Kharkiv and Luhansk Oblasts. Iowa, along with Ukraine and Argentina, are the 3 areas in the World where large expanses of “Black Earth” can be found.
The Latest Denys includes lots of news about the drone strike. At about 9:25 into the video there is footage of the firing that went on near Denys’ house. Much of the air defense against the drones consists of individuals shooting at them with machine guns or even personal firearms. They are having some success, as Ukraine has shot down most of the drones.
U.S. Defense Posture
This Op-Ed, from today’s Wall Street Journal entitled “The U.S. Military’s Growing Weakness,” covers a report from the Heritage Foundation, stating that the U.S. military is unprepared to fight even one war, much less two, with major weakness in the Navy and Air Force. Ukrainian policymakers should be prepared for this coming up as an issue in the up-coming U.S. mid-term elections and, if as expected the Republicans take control of the House of Representatives, in the next Congress, especially the level of military support Ukraine is getting from the U.S., relative to support Ukraine is getting from European allies. Personally, I think the U.S. should give Ukraine everything Ukraine asks for, but there are those who are likely going to assume positions of influence in the U.S. Congress who disagree.
