Latest Attacks

This morning, Kyiv Time, Kyiv was attacked by several drones supplied to Russia by Iran.  28 drones were launched toward Kyiv, and 23 were shot down. The fact that drones were used instead of cruise missiles suggests, as many have claimed, that perhaps Russia is running out of cruise missiles.

One drone destroyed a residential building on Zhylanska Street.  There were casualties.  In addition to residential buildings Zhylanska Street also contains several business centers.   Zhylanska Street, along with Sakshaganska Street, both one-way streets going in opposite directions, constitute a major thoroughfare in Central Kyiv.   Both streets are usually very congested during the time when the drones hit.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the drones were supposed to hit busy traffic on Zhylanska, where the loss of life would’ve been higher.

News From the Battlefield

“Reporting From Ukraine” described a battle in Kharkiv/Luhansk, between the cities of Svatove and Kremina.   From looking at the map, Russia launched an attack attempting to push Ukraine back from a defense line that the Russians are still building, Ukraine counterattacked and succeeded in pushing the Russians back to the point where they started.   This report is another illustration of why the war is a “War of Rivers.”

The Latest Denys focuses on Kherson, particularly the evacuation of Russians who have been in charge of Kherson’s civil administration.   Denys has other news, including:

·       New Russian conscripts from the mobilization entered Kherson, and immediately started running away which, among other things, reveals Russian fixed positions to Ukrainian artillery.

·       According to Denys, the U.S. ban on Ukraine using HIMARS to hit targets in Russian territory has been lifted.   There have been several unexplained explosions in Belgorod, a major Russian staging area in Russia, not far from Kharkiv.   If true, that the ban has been lifted, expect the U.S. to supply the longer range version of the HIMARS, that can be fired using the same launcher.

·       2 Ukrainian S-300 anti-aircraft systems were destroyed by Russia in the same strike.   Denys points out that it was a grave error to place 2 S-300s in close proximity to each other.

·       Iran may begin to supply ballistic missiles to Russia, to replace Russia’s depleted stocks of Iskanders.   Ukraine had no defense against Iskanders and it will likely have no defense against Iran’s ballistic missiles, either.  These missiles are likely similar to the Iraqi “Scud” missiles, that were used to attack Israel during the 1st Gulf War.   Most of the Scuds were destroyed by U.S. Patriot missiles.  One Israeli Government official has said that Iran’s decision to supply Russia with ballistic missiles should prompt Israel to begin military support for Ukraine.   It will be interesting to see what the support entails.

·       At 6:30 into Denys’ video he has a comparison between the capabilities of the U.S. NASAM anti-aircraft system and the German IRIS-T, both of which are being supplied to Ukraine.  Advantage Germany.  As the war goes on, and after the war, expect Ukraine, with Western assistance, to develop one of the World’s most sophisticated integrated air defense system.

·       The UK is supplying Ukraine with underwater drones.

·       According to Denys, Russia has proposed evacuating the portion of Khersno Oblast on the Right Bank of the Dnieper River, in return for a ceasefire.   Bon chance.
