Timothy Snyder
He is currently teaching a course at Yale, where he is an endowed professor, entitled “The Making of Modern Ukraine.” His most recent lecture, covering the latter part of the 17th Century, and the 18th Century, is his best so far. It covers the Ottoman Empire, The Crimean Khanate, the Cossacks, Poland, and Russia. Through all this, modern Ukraine begins to appear. In under 50 minutes, Snyder debunks Russia’s assertion that Crimea is Russian, and that Russians and Ukrainian’s are the same people.
Snyder also gave a lecture entitled “As Ukraine Goes, So Goes the World.” Listening to the last 15 minutes explains the title. Here he addresses the question of whether Zelensky would leave Ukraine at the beginning of the war, why virtually all U.S. policymakers agreed that Zelenskyy would leave, and why Zelenskyy’s decision to stay, along with Ukraine’s success in the war, is a very positive sign for the future of freedom everywhere.
Below, my collaborator claims that Russia is winning the information war. The fact that many current and former U.S. policymakers believed that Zelenskyy would leave, and Ukraine would fall in 3 days, suggests that my collaborator has a point. However, I would suggest that the problem isn’t so much in Russia’s current information war. The problem goes back to how Ukraine has been treated by our own educational institutions for decades, specifically Ukraine as part of Russia. After all, the policymakers Snyder referred to in his lecture are all products of these institutions. Educators like Serhii Plokhii and Timothy Snyder are beginning to change this.
You may have to listen to Snyder’s lecture through Apple podcasts.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers the current situation in Kherson. Russians who are heading the Russian administration of Kherson have evacuated Kherson City. They have moved not just to the opposite bank of the Dnieper River. They have moved to a city very close to Crimea. According to “Reporting from Ukraine,” the Ukrainians now have around 60,000 troops in or near the Kherson Theater, or around 2 ½ times the number of Russian troops.

“Ukraine controls information about the war. Even so it appears from international sources they are winning the information war. There must be some arena where Russia excels other than killing civilians.”
