“The Vatican Missile Crisis”/Wall Street Journal
The Greek Catholic Church predominates in Western Ukraine. The Church follows the Eastern Orthodox Rites but recognizes the Pope in Rome as their spiritual leader.
I’ve often wondered why, over the years, Rome has consistently failed to call out the Soviet State for persecuting and deporting Greek Catholics, but at the same time ignoring the collaboration of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church with the Soviet State, and now with Putin’s Russian Federation.
This Op-Ed, in today’s Wall Street Journal, sheds some light on Rome’s failure to support the Greek Catholic Church, and even supporting its own church leaders in former Soviet satellites. The Op-Ed conflates the start of “Vatican II,” under Pope John XXIII, with the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both began on virtually the same day in 1962. As a result Rome made the decision to accommodate the Soviet State, to continue the effort to reach an accommodation with the Moscow Patriarchate, an effort that continues today under Pope Francis I, despite The Moscow Patriarchate’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and despite Rome’s continued marginalization of the Greek Catholic Church.
For those of you who may not be able to open the link to this article, because of a paywall, I’ll include some quotes:
“This striking coincidence (with the start of Vatican II and the Cuban Missile Crisis) typically goes unremarked. But it had lasting consequences that are evident today. If, for example, one wants to understand why Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, allowed himself to be subjected to lie after outrageous lie from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the war in Ukraine during their meeting at the United Nations General Assembly last month, the beginnings of the answer date to October 1962.”
“John XXIII and the Vatican’s diplomats were badly shaken by the Cuban missile crisis, not least because of the threat it posed to the council. So, the Vatican developed a new approach to Moscow and its satellites. The church ceased all public condemnation of communist persecution. It intensified ecumenical overtures to the Russian Orthodox Church, although its leadership was closely controlled by the KGB.”
“Ostpolitik, as this new policy was dubbed, intensified under John XXIII’s successor, Pope Paul VI. And while students at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy—the Roman graduate school for the Vatican’s future diplomats—are taught today that the Ostpolitik was a great success that helped set the stage for the nonviolent collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989, that claim is impossible to sustain given the documentary evidence from Warsaw Pact intelligence archives.”
“Warsaw Pact moles and collaborators in Rome spread disinformation at Vatican II about influential Catholic leaders the communists detested, such as Hungary’s József Mindszenty and Poland’s Stefan Wyszyński.”
“It wasn’t the Ostpolitik, the misbegotten child of the Cuban missile crisis, that empowered Catholicism in East and Central Europe to play an important role in the revolution of 1989. It was Pope John Paul II’s bold defense of human rights and religious freedom.”
“Ostpolitik 2.0 underwrites the Vatican’s accommodating approach to authoritarian regimes today—as seen in its giving the Chinese Communist Party a voice in the appointment of bishops, the feckless efforts at dialogue with the thug-regimes of Nicolás Maduro and Daniel Ortega, and the suggestion that the West is to blame for the war in Ukraine.”
The Cracking of the Authoritarians – What Gives?
At the same time the pundits are busy with covering the deep political divisions in major Western democracies, the U.S., Great Britain, and other places, and pondering the question of whether democracy can survive, and whether authoritarianism is a system whose time has come, there is very little commentary on what is happening inside the borders of 3 of the most significant authoritarians, Russia, Iran, and even China.
The West stays largely silent as Iranian authorities try to strike back against the girls and their supporters in Iran. The authority of the Chinese Communist Party seems be undermined by the continual Covid lockdowns and the mortgage crisis which is seeing Chinese refusing to make mortgage payments on properties that don’t exist. And then there is Russia.
Is this 1989 2.0?
News From the Battlefield – Review of the Bidding
Once again, there seems to be a Ukrainian news blackout on the Kherson Offensive, but at the same time increased predictions about the imminent liberation of Kherson City. Askold Krushenycky, the London Times correspondent reporting from Dnipro, says that both Ukraine and Russia are telling residents of Kherson City to evacuate. Krhshenycky also speaks about how the influence of approximately 1.5 million Crimean Tatars living in Turkey have on Turkish politics, especially with a presidential election scheduled for next year.
In Kharkiv/Luhansk, both the latest “Reporting From Ukraine” and the Latest Denys are covering Ukrainian gains in the northern part of the line. The objectives seem to be the town of Troitske, near the Russian border, and Svatove further south. Both cities are astride road and rail lines on which the Russians rely to supply both Kremina, east of Lyman, and Luhansk City. Denys also speaks about the possible Ukrainian counterattack toward Melitopol, that could cut Russia’s “land bridge” to Crimea. With the Kerch Bridge partly destroyed, to the point where rail and heavy truck traffic are both blocked, an offensive against Melitopol could effectively cut off both Crimea and Kherson from Russian re-supply, and it would link up Ukrainian regular forces with partisan groups that have causing havoc in and around Melitopol since the start of the war. The only rail line Russia can currently use to re-supply Kherson runs through Melitopol. It has been subjected to continual partisan attacks.
The final piece might be the potential of trapping of Russian forces, including the Wagner Group, operating in Donetsk, if Ukrainian forces now operating in Luhansk could move behind the Russians.
Anti-aircraft – Shashank Joshi the “Economist’s” defense expert said, in today’s Webinar, that it is impossible for Ukraine to completely control the skies. Ukraine is now getting, very belatedly, advanced anti-aircraft systems from the West. Ukraine will have to take a choice where to place them, among critical infrastructure including power stations, both civilian and military command and control facilities, with the Presidential Administration being a top priority, and protecting civilians. Ukraine’s high command will also have to make a choice about where to point the air-search radars, south toward the Black Sea and Crimea, north toward Belarus and Western Russia, or east toward Russia. They’ll have help from U.S. satellites. With all that, the systems that Ukraine is getting won’t stop terminal velocity weapons like the short-range Iskander missile, where there is almost no time to respond.
Russia – In the past few days I have come to the conclusion that only one country is going to survive this war intact, either Ukraine or Russia. In today’s Economist Webinar Arkady Ostrovsky the Economist’s Russia Editor, seems to have come roughly to the same conclusion. He believes that there will be a very different Russia, almost certainly without Putin as its Head. Perhaps it’s time to read Antony Beevor’s new book about the Russian Civil War, that describes what happened in Russia 100 years ago.
What concerns me the most is if the United States, along with its Western Allies, conclude that a Russian breakup, or breakdown, is too great a threat, and they try to force Ukraine to the negotiating table. We saw that in 1991, with Bush 41’s “Chicken Kyiv” speech. In the U.S., even though they may not admit it, there is still a Russia bias among policy makers, even among those who support Ukraine. It comes from the education they all received, one that never really considered Ukraine as an entity independent of Russia.
In my opinion forcing Ukraine to the negotiating table, in order to “save” Russia won’t work. Ukraine will keep fighting, and NATO will have a nasty guerilla war on its Eastern flank. Ukraine may not get weapons from the U.S., but they’ll continue to get weapons from Poland and the Baltics, countries that have already committed much of their stocks to Ukraine, and private financing from elsewhere, including but not limited to the Ukrainian Diaspora.
As my Paternal Grandmother was fond of saying, “There we are.”

Russian Invasion of Ukraine 12:00 noon October 13 to 12:00 noon October 14, 2022
“FT predicts that Kherson will be liberated this month. I hope that the FT has improved its predictive capacity because at the beginning of the war it predicted Ukraine would lose in two weeks.” At the time, some might’ve argued that FT was overestimating Ukraine’s capabilities, since most of the pundits predicted that Ukraine would fold in 3 to 5 days.
