“Moral & Psychological Preparation – An Important Component in the Ukrainian Way of War”/Gen. Mick Ryan via Substack
Preparing Ukrainian recruits psychologically for what they will experience on the battlefield is a critical component of Ukraine’s ability to check Russia’s numerical superiority, in both troops and equipment. Minimizing losses from mental trauma helps keep Ukraine in the war, and it is critical to the high morale of Ukrainian troops. Conversely, there have been reports commenting on the poor state of the mental condition of Russian troops. As Gen. Ryan states, “Major General Vladyslav Klochkov is a combat experienced, former brigade commander in the Ukrainian ground forces, who leads Ukrainian armed forces General Directorate of Moral and Psychological Support. As Klochkov described to me, “I was appointed by General Zaluzhny to respond to change and oversee the mental readiness of all our people.” “ (my emphasis)
What Gen. Ryan applies to Ukrainian servicemen and women, also applies to “all of our people.” Ukrainians have been fighting a Russian invasion for almost 10 years. As I pointed out in an email I sent several years ago, during the stalemate that lasted between 2014 and 2022, approximately 200,000 children living along the Contact Line in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts were suffering from some kind of mental trauma resulting from continual shelling across the Contact Line.
Relatives and family members of Ukrainian servicemen and women living throughout Ukraine during this period were seen to be suffering from some type of mental trauma, from watching events on television and the continual tension of having their loved ones in harm’s way or as my Father, a WW-II veteran used to say, experiencing “shots fired in anger.”
Since the start of Russia’s latest invasion, the importance of maintaining the mental readiness of Ukrainian troops has been greatly magnified. The importance now extends to 1st responders, those who must conduct rescues in burning buildings hit by Russian missiles, and Ukraine’s entire civilian population, who have experienced electricity blackouts and the tension associated with the uncertainty of whether their home, their relatives, or themselves, will be “next.”
Personally, I have not heard of an experienced general in any army being appointed to a position like the post that Gen. Klochkov now occupies. Kudos to Gen. Zaluzhny for making the appointment and giving such high priority to mental conditions to the troops under his command.
“Why the World Has Been Footing the Bill for Putin’s War”/Financial Times
There isn’t much new here. What Russia has been allowed to do, because of earnings from oil experts, also applies to Iran and its funding of extremist groups throughout the Middle East, and beyond.
In the event some readers cannot surmount FT’s paywall, here are some excerpts:
· “The Kremlin is at a tipping point in the economics of this war. This week the finance ministry disclosed that it aims to spend Rbs10.8tn ($108bn) on defence next year, three times the amount allocated in 2021, and equivalent to 6 per cent of Russia’s GDP. But the actual amount will inevitably be higher due to hidden items and is likely to be about 7 per cent ($126bn). Forbes Ukraine calculated Russia’s main war expenses at around $170bn over the past year and a half, although this excluded some regular defence expenditure. Such estimates are undoubtedly imprecise but fall within the same range, indicating the war has cost the Kremlin $100bn to $120bn per year.”
· “However, this has not significantly impacted the economy — at least, not yet. Because it is the buyers of Russian oil, rather than the Russian state, who have been paying for the conflict.”
· If export revenues were to dip to $350bn, Putin would be unlikely to continue the war given the dual burden of military expenditure and high social spending to maintain domestic stability.
It is for this reason that Gen. Kyrylo Buhdanov Ukraine’s Head of military intelligence, recently stated that, all things being equal, Russia will be able to continue the war into 2025.
“The Advance of Ukraine’s Mosquito Navy”/Financial Times
As a “Former Naval Person” I have taken an almost visceral interest in following the success of Ukraine in dismantling the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the effective loss of its home port, Sevastopol.
The FT article didn’t mention Ukraine’s riverine force, which has recently been augmented by the addition of several “Defiant” Class patrol boats from the United States. These boats are capable of operating in Dnipro River, as far upstream as Kherson City. They likely played a role in Ukraine’s occupation of the Boyko Towers, the offshore oil rigs in the Black Sea that now serve as launching pads for Ukrainian raids along the western coast of Crimea.
Ukraine also operates smaller craft that can enter tributaries of the Dnipro, found in the delta opposite Kherson City and downstream. They are used to support incursions by the Ukrainian Army, on the Left Bank of the Dnipro.
If Ukraine can take control of the Kinburn Spit, a narrow peninsula jutting out into the Black Sea from the Left Bank of the Dnipro, they can open up the Port of Mykolaiv thus augmenting Ukraine’s ability to ship larger quantities of grain to buyers in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
News From the Battlefield
Looking at both the latest “Reporting From Ukraine” and the “Latest Denys,” Ukraine’s offensive now extends beyond simply Robotyne. Ukraine has been making gains south of Bakhmut and continues to make gains south of Robotyne, the offensive that the pundits like to focus on. While the Russians are making some small gains around Avdiivka, Ukraine seems to be exacting a heavy price. Yesterday, according to reports from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry that appears at the end of today’s Sitrep (below), Russia lost 1,030 servicemen, the highest daily loss that I can remember.
