News From the Battlefield – Yesterday’s Attacks Likely Planned Before Kerch Bridge Attack
Despite yesterday’s rocket attacks, there seems to be no letup in the Ukrainian advances in Kharkiv/Luhansk and Kherson.
The Videos - Today’s “Reporting From Ukraine” contains an excellent account of yesterday’s missile attacks on Ukraine, including:
· The attacks were well-coordinated, requiring more planning than could’ve taken place in the 48 hours between the attack on the Kerch Bridge and yesterday’s missile strikes.
· Nearly all the attacks were all “stand-off,” with missiles and drones launched from Russia, occupied Crimea, Belarus and the Black Sea.
· Most of the missiles targeted at critical infrastructure sites, including electrical generating stations, were shot down.
In “The Latest Denys,” he describes the reasons for his belief that the attack on the Kerch Bridge was a Russian operation, part of the conflict now going on inside the Kremlin, among Putin, intelligence services and Kadyrov and Prigozhin. He believes there was a truck bomb that was either set to explode underneath a train carrying gasoline or was remotely detonated by someone in relatively close proximity to the truck. According to Denys, the train had been idled on the bridge for several hours. He said that the truck driver probably had no idea that his truck was carrying a bomb. All trucks must go through examinations before entering the bridge, giving someone the opportunity to put a bomb in the back of the truck.
If Denys is correct, it adds credence to the analysis in “Reporting From Ukraine,” that yesterday’s missile attack and last Saturday’s attack on Kerch Bridge were unrelated.
Anti-Aircraft Systems – Ukraine has been asking the U.S. and other countries for advanced anti-aircraft systems for several months. One of the reasons why Ukraine’s request has not been approved is the possibility that anti-aircraft systems fired from Ukrainian territory would enter Russian airspace to shoot down missiles launched from aircraft or ground launchers operating over and on Russian territory. It seems that with yesterday’s strike this concern has finally been dismissed.
Looking at the map included in “Reporting From Ukraine,” unless Ukraine is able to hit missiles launched from over or on Russian territory the response time is dramatically reduced. Kharkiv is only 25 miles from the Russian border; Kyiv is less than 100 miles from the border of Belarus. Both the U.S. and Germany have now promised to deliver advanced anti-aircraft systems. It is likely that part of the agreement to deliver these systems includes permission for Ukraine to use them, to launch anti-aircraft rockets in time to shoot down incoming missiles flying over Russian territory.
There is likely additional permission to use U.S. made Harpoon missiles, previously delivered to Ukraine from Denmark, to hit Russian naval ships operating in the Black Sea. Ukraine does have its own anti-ship missile, the Neptune, that was used against “Moskva,” Flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
I would not be surprised to see a Ukrainian attack on the Kerch Bridge, and attacks on ships in the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
