World Teachers’ Day – 6 Ukrainian Educators Who Have Lost Their Lives in the War/Ukrainska Pravda
World Teachers’ Day was last October 5th. This article covers 6 Ukrainian educators who lost their lives during Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine. They were all individuals who taught in primary and secondary schools, in smaller villages throughout Ukraine, villages that have suffered disproportionally during Russian attacks and occupation. In addition to their teaching duties, educators like these who work in the smaller villages play significant roles in village life.
They are all heroes. God bless them.
Ron DeSantis Interview
Ron DeSantis is a candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination for President. Yesterday he was interviewed on one of the Sunday political talk shows. His remarks about U.S. support for Ukraine were consistent with other Ukraine opponents in the race for the Republican nomination, including Donald Trump and Vivek Ramaswamy, in the sense that what he said about U.S. support for Ukraine was wrong, and DeSantis should’ve known it was wrong.
During the interview DeSantis said that the U.S. was paying for pensions and salaries of Ukrainian Government officials, and he stated that this money should go to funding border security. His implication was that it was only the U.S. that was covering these expenses. DeSantis’ allegation was dead wrong.
Last week Lenna Koszarny, Co-Founder and Head of Horizon Capital, Ukraine’s largest private equity firm, stated recently that 40% of Ukraine’s budget was covered by tax revenues. In addition, the EU and individual European countries, both EU Members and non-Members, provide a far larger share of the overall and non-military support for Ukraine than does the U.S., something that Ron DeSantis conveniently left out of his remarks.
As a Ukraine supporter, I don’t mind having an honest debate about the level of U.S. support for Ukraine, but fake news and disinformation about that support, especially coming from Presidential candidates including Trump, Ramaswamy, and DeSantis, needs to be consistently called out. That said, financing Ukrainian public officials, like the 6 educators described in the previous article, should be celebrated, and not criticized, especially by someone like Ron DeSantis who, partly because of his 3 small children, claims to place such a high value on primary education.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers Ukraine’s effort to expand their salient around Robotyne. He talks a lot about fields and tree lines, both of which have played major roles in the fighting.
Some of the fields are so large that, because of the curvature of the Earth, it’s impossible to see other side. Military units moving across the fields are subject to attacks from drones, helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft.
Most fields in Ukraine are bordered by tree lines, that serve both as boundaries and as windbreaks. During the summer, it is difficult to see units operating inside the tree lines. Most of the trenches and defense lines that Russia has constructed are located in or near the tree lines.
In the next 15-30 days the trees that make up the tree lines will start losing their foliage. Last year’s Ukrainian offensives, in Kharkiv and Kherson, took place in September and October, before the trees lost their foliage. Everyone seems to focus on what role mud will play in the progress of Ukraine’s offensive once the rain starts. It will be interesting to see the effect of tree lines without their foliage on the progress of Ukraine’s offensive. Perhaps it will help Ukraine, by making Russian defense lines and trench network more visible from the air.
