In-Laws in the War
My wife currently counts 5 members of her family fighting in the war.
My wife’s 56-year-old nephew is in his 3rd war. He is the son of a much older sister. As an 18-year-old he fought for the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan. He re-enlisted in 2014 when Russians and proxies invaded and occupied Donbas, now this war. He is a truck driver. His unit had been in a relatively safe area, but several days ago they were rotated to the Front.
His 2 sons, my wife’s grand nephews, are both fighting. One was wounded, he recovered, and he’s now back at the front.
Another nephew of my wife’s is a 1st Responder. Unlike in the U.S., where 1st responders are usually part of local police and fire departments, in Ukraine they are part a national organization similar to the military. They’re the ones whom you see on TV going into burning residential buildings, putting out transformer fires, etc. It can be more dangerous than being in the Army because Russia has been known to hit a residential building, induce the 1st responders to go in and then, often with information from 5th columnists giving Russians updates, hit the building a 2nd time with the objective of killing the 1st responders while they’re in the building, rescuing occupants.
The son-in-law of my wife’s older brother was called up early last summer. He’s now at the Front, but we don’t know where.
My wife speaks with them fairly often. As far as I know, they’re all optimistic about the course of the war. That is also true of the children of friends of mine with whom I’m in contact, all of whom have experienced what my late Uncle used to say, “shots fired in anger.”
News From the Battlefield
Dnipro Crossings (Zone C on Bohdan’s map, below) – In his latest, Denys reports that Ukraine continues to expand lodgments on the Left Bank of the Dnipro. Ukraine is now present along long stretches of the Left Bank, from opposite Kherson City to just downstream from Nova Khakovka.
The Right Bank of the Dnipro is made up of a series of high bluffs; the Left Bank is low lying, and it was heavily flooded when the Nova Khakovka dam was destroyed. The flooded area, plus land that is now exposed due to the loss of the dam, may represent another problem for Ukraine, especially if they’re planning, as I expect they are, in installing pontoon bridges and moving heavy equipment across the river. On Denys’ maps, these areas are shown light blue and orange. It is likely that these areas won’t dry out until next Summer.
Another barrier for Ukraine is the number of islands, opposite Kherson and downstream toward the Dnipro Delta, many of which are still occupied by Russia. Ukraine must capture or occupy these islands, one by one.
Avdiivka (Zone B) – This is excellent analysis from Francis Farrell of the Kyiv Independent about the fighting around Avdiivka. At 20 seconds into the video, there is a map showing the relative locations of the slag heap and the coking plant. It is possible to see how occupying the slag heap gave Ukrainians an un-interrupted view of Russian lines. It is now contested, with neither side in control.
Even though the coking plant is located along the original 2014 Line of Contact, it continued to operate right up until the latest Russian invasion, likely with the acquiescence of both sides. The coking plant was the major source of employment in the region.
Starting in 2014 Ukraine built up 3 defense rings along the line of contact opposite Donetsk City, a likely reason why Russia is now having so much difficulty. At 5:30 into Denys’ video, he shows evidence that Russia is building up its own defense lines, possibly against a Ukrainian counterattack east, toward Donetsk City.
Avdiivka is not a repeat of Bakhmut, which was an urban battle. Instead, Avdiivka is more like Vuhledar where, last winter, Russian forces were decimated. Both Avdiivka and Vuhledar are encounters that took, or is taking place in open country, where Ukraine with its Bradleys armed with TOW anti-tank missiles likely has an advantage.
At 6:10 into his video, Denys provides graphic illustration on the roles that rats and mice are playing in the war, on both sides.
