Lv’iv Book Forum – “Colonial Discourse in Russian Literature: How We Misunderstood the Russian Soul”
Thanks goes to my stepdaughter for sending me this.
The discussion lasts for 1 hour and 20 minutes. In the interest of brevity and having watched the entire video, my suggestion is to focus on the remarks of Ewa Thompson, Professor Emeritus of Slavic Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Her remarks start at 23 minutes into the video and ends at 43 minutes. Prof. Thompson makes additional remarks starting at 57:25 into the video, and it ends at 1:03:00.
For those who don’t have time to listen to Prof. Thompson’s remarks here are some of my takeaways:
· Ukrainian literature and Ukrainian writers have always been suppressed by Russian invaders.
· Prof. Thompson gives 5 reasons why Russian literature has not been subjected to colonialist criticism, as has British or French literature:
o First - Until recently, the remoteness of Russia.
o Second – Russian colonists didn’t go overseas. In the 19th Century, Russia added 55 sq. miles of territory, every year.
o Third – Russia re-named the territories it conquered and attempted to wipe out separate identities. Much of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia took place in conquered territories (Polish Partition, Baltics, Belarus). She contrasts Russia’s treatment of conquered peoples by subsuming their national identities, with that of the British in India.
o Fourth – Russia has bribed national movements in the “Global South,” with the ANC in South Africa being a prime example. A second example of Russian bribery as a means to expand their territory was Catherine the Great’s payments to Voltaire, in return for writing pamphlets describing Poland as “backward,” laying the intellectual basis for the Polish partitions. She said that the financial relationship between Catherine and Voltaire is still a State secret in Russia.
o Fifth – Several writers in India and other places have written that it’s impossible to have “White-on-White” colonialism, essentially giving Russia a “pass” on their subjugations of Ukraine and the Caucuses (to take 2 examples), that included the plundering of natural resources not dissimilar to King Leopold of Belgium’s plundering of the Congo. NOTE: One only needs to read Stephen Cohen’s biography of Nikolai Bukharin, who was in charge of Bolshevik economic policy to understand how plundering of Ukraine, known by the Bolsheviks as “pumping over,” was a central pillar of that policy.
She talks about Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky as having colonialist tendencies. A much later example, according to Serhii Plokhii in his latest book “The Russo Ukraine War,” is Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who continually argued that Ukraine is part of Russia.
Prof. Thompson stressed that novels by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky are great novels. She only argues that they quietly provide intellectual support for Russian colonialism.
In the 2nd part of her remarks, Prof. Thompson makes the following two observations:
· Was it not for the October Revolution, Russia would have moved closer to Europe and not perceived as separate.
· Russian writers may have been putting down Ukrainian writers because of their belief that they were considered inferior by Western writers.
In these emails we have always believed that Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine is more than simply the battles in the east and in the south. For this reason, we have also focused on religion, the split between the now independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Moscow Patriarchate, the importance of Ukrainian civil society, culture with the Lv’iv Book Forum being one example, and Ukraine’s battle against corruption. Those who read these emails wanting to learn more about the military situation may sometimes be disappointed.
News From the Battlefield
The latest “Reporting From Ukraine” provided an incredible account of the Battle of Terrikon, near Avdiivka. Terrikon is a mountain, created out of slag from all the coal mines in the region. Russian commanders ordered their troops to scale the mountain, which as can be seen from the video is nearly vertical in places. According to “Reporting From Ukraine,” Russia suffered a devastating defeat that partly contributed to their decision to pause their offensive with the goal of taking Avdiivka.

NATIONAL
DYNAMICS OF PREVALENCE OF SPLIT NARRATIVES AMONG THE POPULATION: RESULTS OF A TELEPHONE SURVEY CONDUCTED ON SEPTEMBER 29 - OCTOBER 9, 2023
From September 29 to October 9, 2023, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own all-Ukrainian public opinion survey "Omnibus". By the method of computer-assisted telephone interviews(CATI) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers (with random generation of phone numbers and subsequent statistical weighting), 1,010 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except AR of Crimea) were interviewed. The survey was conducted with adult (aged 18 and older) citizens of Ukraine who, at the time of the survey, lived on the territory of Ukraine (within the boundaries controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022). The sample did not include residents of territories that were not temporarily controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022 (AR of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts), and the survey was not conducted with citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022.
Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 3.4% for indicators close to 50%, 3.0% for indicators close to 25%, 2.1% - for indicators close to 10%, 1.5% - for indicators close to 5%.

More contrarian views from somebody with great credentials, but the usual tripe: The US is using Ukraine as a stalking horse for regime change in Russia. Godfrey Bloom says that there are 200,000 casualties in the Ukrainian army, and that Russia is preparing an invasion to capture Kharkiv which is immanent. He also says that the news of Ukrainian battlefield success is a lie by the corrupt media. It's the same Kremlin talking points from the right. Why do they get this wrong, yet they are right about other things? I don't get it. The same worn out arguments again and again while claiming that the news is all wrong. By the way, this guy has great credentials and should know better.
