Lou “The Toe” Groza and the Village of Hroza
6 days ago, during a wake for a fallen Ukrainian soldier, the small village of Hroza (Гроза), in Kharkiv Oblast was hit by a Russian Iskander missile. At last count, 54 townspeople have died, out of a population of approximately 300. 2 brothers have been caught by the authorities, and accused of giving the coordinates of the café where the wake was being held to the Russians.
Lou “The Toe” Groza was a star player for the National Football League Cleveland Browns, during their glory days in the 1950s. In Cyrillic, Lou Groza’s last name would be the same spelling as the town of Hroza.
Lou Groza was both an offensive lineman and a kicker, thus his nickname “The Toe.” In addition to Groza, during the 1950s the Cleveland Browns included stars like Otto Graham at Quarterback and Jim Brown their star fullback. All 3, Groza, Graham, and Brown, are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. I am old enough to have seen all 3 play, in person, when my father took me to see the the Cleveland Browns, when they came to San Francisco and routinely beat my team, the San Francisco 49ers.
After the tragedy in Hroza I did some research, and I found that Lou Groza’s parents immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe and settled in Martins Ferry Ohio, just across the Ohio River from Wheeling, West Virginia. They ran a tavern on Main Street, perhaps not dis-similar to the café in the village of Hroza. Many immigrants who came to the United States from Eastern Europe settled in this area, and often they went to work in the coal mines and steel mills in the area.
Is there a connection between Lou Groza’s parents and the town of Hroza? I don’t know, but Lou Groza having the same last name as the village of Groza should remind people of how much better off this country is, because of the suffering and war that has ravaged Eastern Europe, forcing people like Lou Groza’s parents to come to the United States, and for Lou Groza to reach the pinnacle of his profession.
The war in Ukraine is only the latest spasm of violence to visit Eastern Europe, with the tragedy in Hroza being a recent example. For those who oppose us providing arms to Ukraine, perhaps they can think of our assistance as a form of insurance, that will allow Ukrainians to be able to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we, including those who oppose support for Ukraine, take for granted, without having to flee the countries of their birth, as to many of their ancestors were forced to do including the Groza Family, or to be subjected to the kind of horror visited upon the people of Hroza.
“A Difficult but Necessaary Decision”/Sergey Karaganov “Russia in Global Affairs”
Karaganov is “Council on Foreign Affairs & Defense Policy in Russia,” and one of Russia’s leading thinkers on national security and defense in Russia.
People often describe Putin as a “master of the long game,” but most people who make this observation don’t bother to define what the “long game” really is. For me, Karaganov comes closes to defining the “long game” from Russia’s point of view. Some excerpts (my underlining):
· “A more attractive option would be liberating and reincorporating the East and the South of Ukraine, and forcing the rest to surrender, followed by complete demilitarization and the creation of a friendly buffer state. But this would be possible only if and when we are able to break the West’s will to incite and support the Kiev junta, and to force it to retreat strategically.”
· “The United States has turned Ukraine into a striking fist intended to create a crisis and thus tie the hands of Russia―the military-political core of the non-Western world, which is freeing itself from the shackles of neo-colonialism―but better still blow it up, thus radically weakening the rising alternative superpower―China. For our part, we delayed our preemptive strike either because we misunderstood the inevitability of a clash, or because we were gathering strength. Moreover, following modern, mainly Western, military-political thought, we thoughtlessly set too high a threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, inaccurately assessed the situation in Ukraine, and did not start the military operation there successfully enough.”
· “What is being decided on the battlefields in Ukraine is not only, and not so much, what Russia and the future world order will look like, but mainly whether there will be any world at all or the planet will turn into radioactive ruins poisoning the remains of humanity.”
· “By breaking the West’s will to continue the aggression, we will not only save ourselves and finally free the world from the five-century-long Western yoke, but we will also save humanity. By pushing the West towards a catharsis and thus its elites towards abandoning their striving for hegemony, we will force them to back down before a global catastrophe occurs, thus avoiding it. Humanity will get a new chance for development.”
· “The confrontation with the West in Ukraine, no matter how it ends, should not distract us from the strategic internal movement―spiritual, cultural, economic, political, and military-political―to the Urals, Siberia, and the Great Ocean. We need a new Ural-Siberian strategy, implying several spirit-lifting projects, including, of course, the creation of a third capital in Siberia. This movement should become part of the efforts, so urgently needed today, to articulate our Russian Dream―the image of Russia and the world we want to see.”
· “But this military operation cannot end with a decisive victory without forcing the West to retreat strategically, or even surrender, and compelling it to give up attempts to reverse history and preserve global dominance, and to focus on itself and its current multilevel crisis. Roughly speaking, it must “buzz off” so that Russia and the world could move forward unhindered.”
· Therefore, it is necessary to arouse the instinct of self-preservation that the West has lost and convince it that its attempts to wear Russia out by arming Ukrainians are counterproductive for the West itself. We will have to make nuclear deterrence a convincing argument again by lowering the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons set unacceptably high, and by rapidly but prudently moving up the deterrence-escalation ladder.
· “I have said and written many times that if we correctly build a strategy of intimidation and deterrence and even use of nuclear weapons, the risk of a “retaliatory” nuclear or any other strike on our territory can be reduced to an absolute minimum.”
· “But what if they do not back down? What if they have lost the instinct of self-preservation completely? In this case we will have to hit a bunch of targets in a number of countries in order to bring those who have lost their mind to reason.”
· “If Russia delivered a nuclear strike, the Chinese would condemn it, but they would also rejoice at heart that a powerful blow has been dealt to the reputation and position of the United States.”
· “And then Russia and humanity will persevere through all the hardships and go into the future, which seems to me bright, multipolar, multicultural, multicolored, and giving countries and peoples a chance to build their own and common future.”
From the Russian perspective, Karaganov’s article makes the rantings of Medvedev, Margarita Simonyan, and others who appear on Russian political talk shows advocating nuclear strikes on London and elsewhere, seem a little less crazy to a Russian audience. They seem to fit in well with Karagnov’s narrative.
Also, from the Russian perspective, it makes the huge losses of life, and losses of equipment, Russia has sustained in Ukraine almost worth it or, at least, something for which Russian leaders aren’t particularly concerned about.
News From the Battlefield.
From the Russian casualty count shown in the “Sitrep,” Russia has estimated to have lost 820 servicemen on October 10th, and 990 on October 11th. This is up from the approximately 400/day that have lost in the previous weeks.
The reason for the uptick in losses is the Russian attempt to encircle the city of Avdiiivka, located less than 10km. from the City of Donetsk and, previously, the site of one of the world’s largest coking plants. The last 2 reports from “Reporting From Ukraine” have focused on Avdiivka, October 11th and October 10th.
Because of Avdiivka’s proximity to Donetsk, Russia has been able to amass large numbers of troops and equipment in any number of warehouses inside Donetsk, making the troop and equipment concentrations very hard for Ukraine to detect. Is Russia trying to force Ukraine to move troops away from the offensive in the South, around Robotyne, or does Russia believe that they have Ukrainians tied down in the South, allowing them to launch an offensive in front of Donetsk? Last Winter Russia tried the same tactic around Vuhledar, launching a significant offensive, and they suffered heavy losses.
At the moment Ukraine is holding their positions and preventing Russia from encircling Avdiivka.
