Tom Friedman Column on October 7th, Entitled “Israel’s Worst Day at War”/New York Times
There were two passages in Friedman’s recent column that got my attention, having to do with how events of last weekend in Israel and Gaza might affect Western arms shipments to Ukraine. The second reported on delusional comments by Pres. Putin, delusional comments that are often held by Western officials.
The first –
· “If Israel is about to invade Gaza and embark on a long war, Ukraine will have to worry about competition from Tel Aviv for Patriot missiles as well as 155-millimeter artillery shells and other basic armaments that Ukraine desperately needs more of and Israel surely will, too.”
I was a bit surprised by this comment because it appears that Friedman was a bit mis-informed about the respective defense needs of Ukraine and Israel.
Both countries use Patriot missile batteries, but Israel relies on the Iron Dome system as its primary ant-missile shield. This time, Hamas was able to largely overpower Iron Dome.
Ukraine doesn’t use Iron Dome. The missiles for Iron Dome are made in the U.S., and are being provided to Israel under an agreement reached during the Obama Administration.
155 mm artillery shells aren’t used in the type of urban combat that Israel expects to engage in when it invades Gaza. Therefore, it is likely that shipments of 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine will continue.
Friedman also doesn’t mention rockets and bombs fired from fixed-wing aircraft. As far as I’m aware, the only U.S. made rocket fired from a Ukrainian fixed wing plane is the HARMS Missile, that is fired from a modified MiG-29. HARMS missiles home in on radar emissions. I’m not sure that Hamas uses surface-to-air radars, although Iran certainly does. Israel will almost certainly rely on the US to replace air-launched missiles or all types. Except for the HARMS missile, Ukraine currently doesn’t use any air-launched missiles made in the US, although that will change with the arrival of F-16s.
Ukraine does use JDAM flying bombs supplied by the US. This is possibly one area where Ukraine’s needs could compete with Israel’s.
Another area where Ukraine may be adversely affected by the events of last weekend is in intelligence gathering, something that Friedman didn’t mention. US aircraft and surveillance drones, some flying under NATO command, have been providing the Ukrainian military with real time intelligence and tactical information, and early warning of Russian missile attacks for Ukraine’s civilian population. Will some of these assets be moved, to provide similar information to the Israeli Defense Forces and the Israeli population, especially if Iran becomes actively engaged?
The second -
· “Last Thursday in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin said that Ukraine was being propped up “thanks to multibillion donations that come each month.” He added, “Just imagine the aid stops tomorrow.” Ukraine “will live for only a week when they run out of ammo.” “
Putin’s remark reflects a delusion that many in the West continue to hold, that if the West decides to stop arming Ukraine that Ukraine will surrender to Russia. If the West stops arming Ukraine what will happen is a very nasty guerilla war on NATO’s eastern flank. Ukraine will continue to get arms; Ukraine now has the largest, most effective army in Europe. Does Putin really think that Ukraine’s army will dissolve in a week simply because the West stops arming Ukraine? If so Putin is just as delusional today, as he was then he sent his troops across the border on February 22, 2022, under the assumption that the war would last 5 days.
It is worth mentioning that at the beginning of the war the strategy of the U.S. and other NATO countries was to give Ukraine weapons that they could use in a guerilla war, such as Stingers, N-Laws, and Javelins. The 155mm howitzers only started arriving in June 2022, long after Ukraine established that they had a chance at victory but, even then, the West still wasn’t convinced. Many in the West still aren’t.
Events in Israel & Gaza – Observations From Long-Time Intelligence Experts
These comments come from an excellent source, and those who made them will go nameless:
The First -
“First, the Iranians are concerned about rapprochement between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Second, Iran can start a proxy war that will require the U.S. to support Israel with military aid thus further drawing downs stocks in our War Readiness Kits which weakens the U.S. ability to directly respond to military threats but also reduces aid that can be given to Ukraine. Third, having conflict in the Crescent takes attention away from Iran itself and the support of the Houthis in Yemen. So, nobody is worried about the Iranian nuclear program while the conflict is ongoing in Israel and Lebanon. Don’t make a mistake the Israelis are going to go after Hezbollah in Lebanon as well. It will also take pressure off the Iranian and Russian support to groups in Syria that the Israelis have been conducting air attacks against.”
“No this is a well-planned strategic move on the part of Iran. It also heightens the external threat level to Iran giving the Theocrats more reason to crack down internally using the excuse of the threat by Israel and the U.S.”
“If Biden doesn’t immediately freeze that money to Iran one has to ask WTH is making decisions in DC and are they pro-Iran.”
The Next –
“There will be learning points for all from this. And not just the tactical ones.
I am puzzled by what Hamas thought they were accomplishing with this--certainly not the elimination of the state of Israel. And they had to realize the costs this would incur for them. So, I can only think that they (their sponsors) were playing to the second-order effects, and that's a sophisticated game that requires a lot of self-sacrifice by Hamas. Strategically, the potential combinations and permutations in those effects are very worrisome.”
The Last –
“An intelligence failure on a massive scale, rivaling that of the October 1973 War. Like you, I am utterly baffled that Mossad and Shin Bet didn't have an inkling of such a multi-faceted, complex operation. As for US intelligence, based upon my own personal experience with the Obama regime, they did not regard Hezbollah (or Hamas, for that matter) as a CT threat, and that filtered down to the IC. Indeed, in November 2010, they directed us to stand down on an effort with DEA, focused on thwarting Hezbollah efforts to move people and materiel across our border, teamed up with drug cartels. I suspect that the same outlook pervades the Biden administration.”
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” covers Ukrainian response to a Russian offensive in Donetsk Oblast.
From watching the videos prepared by “Reporting From Ukraine,” over the last few weeks, including this one, I have noticed that Russian attacks, that “Reporting From Ukraine” states are intended to take territory, really aren’t much more than reconnaissance in force, consisting of a small number of tanks and APCs. Ukraine usually either wipes them out or causes enough damage to force the Russians to withdraw. Even if the Russians were successful, it is hard to imagine that the number of tanks, APCs and infantry described in this video is sufficient to take and hold territory.
Same thing in the South. When Ukraine moves forward, the Russians counterattack with the objective of making it more difficult for Ukraine to consolidate their gains. Russian counterattacks slow down Ukraine’s progress, but Ukraine is still moving forward. The most significant result of the Russian counterattacks has been large losses in equipment and Russian casualties.
