Timothy Snyder, “Colonization, Extermination, Ethnic Cleansing”
This is Prof. Snyder’s latest lecture in his course, “The Making of Modern Ukraine.” It covers events leading up to WW-II, or the “Great Patriotic War,” and into the war itself. In his lecture, Snyder made 2 interesting points:
· If Great Britain hadn’t entered the war in September 1939, on behalf of Poland, the conduct of WW-II might’ve been very different. There might well not have been a Western Front, and the United States might’ve confined its attention to Japan.
· Adolf Hitler thought about Ukraine as an “endless source of food,” and he believed that Ukraine would be easy to subjugate.
· “White Russian[1]” emigrees to the West are telling Hitler that Communism and Bolshevism is a “Jewish plot.” Prior to 1919, Hitler believed that Jews were responsible for Capitalism.
· Hitler had planned to invade the Soviet Union with Poland; the war for Hitler was all about the War in the East.
· Had the Poles chosen not to fight, it is unclear how France and Great Britain would’ve entered the war.
· As of the end of 1941, over 3 million Soviet prisoners were deliberately starved to death, far more than Jews killed in Ukraine during the same period, many of them by a bullet in the back of the neck.
· Nazi Germany was effectively defeated in December 1941, when they failed to subjugate the Soviet Union within 6 to 12 weeks, but it took another 3 ½ years for the Nazis to surrender. Food for thought when talking about the current war.
To complement Snyder’s lectures about this period, students in Prof. Snyder’s course are reading Snyder’s book, “Bloodlands, Europe Between Hitler and Stalin.” The Bloodlands include Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine; the period covered by the book is between 1931 and 1945. The book is hard going, especially the early chapters covering the famine in Ukraine and Stalin’s “Great Terror.” One needs a strong stomach.
News From the Battlefield
Today, my Kyiv colleague reports that today Monday Nov. 7th, was the first Monday in over a month that Kyiv wasn’t subjected to significant bombardment. Another friend says that they are getting around 2 hours/day of electricity at their apartment in Kyiv.
The Latest Denys reports, at around 4:30 into the video, that Ukraine is getting an air-launched cruise missile from Poland, called the “Stormshadow.” It has a range of up to 560km, flying at 100 ft. above ground with a 450kg warhead, allowing Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russia.
Both the Latest Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine,” cover the defense lines Russia is building on the Left Bank of the Dnieper River, opposite Kherson City. These could allow Russian artillery to hit Ukrainian troops approaching Kherson City.
I suspect that Russian defenders on the West Bank will be subjected to increased pressure from partisan units that have operated in this area since the start of the war. Russians may also be vulnerable to a possible Ukrainian offensive going south from Zaporizhya which, conceivably, would allow Ukraine to attack Russian defense lines in Kherson from the rear. “Reporting From Ukraine” has been reporting on fighting in this area for the past few days and, interestingly, Russia is now beginning to build defense lines around Mariupol.
