The Inventory
This is a list of Russian military equipment that has been destroyed or captured since the start of the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine, beginning last February 24th –
“This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers, and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991.”
News From the Battlefield
From looking at “Reporting from Ukraine” and the Latest Denys together, I draw the following conclusions:
· Kharkiv & Luhansk Oblasts - Ukraine is continuing to put pressure on Russian defenders, leading to the eventual liberation of that portion of Luhansk Oblast controlled by Ukraine prior to last February 24th.
· Southern Donetsk Oblast – Ukrainians may be preparing for a thrust south, toward Berdyansk and Melitopol, especially if Russia has transferred troops from this area to Kherson. This action would produce major payoffs for Ukraine, including splitting the land bridge between Kherson, Crimea, and Rostov-on-Don, linking up with partisan groups who have been operating in and around Melitopol since the start of the latest Russian invasion.
· Kherson - Both Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine” believe that there are now approximately 30,000 Russian troops on the Left Bank of the Dnieper River near Kherson City, as part of a Russian strategy to trap advancing Ukrainians moving toward the supposedly abandoned Kherson City. Last August, Russia had an estimated 25,000 troops on the Left Bank. As was the case in August, these troops are still at risk of being trapped, with their backs at the Dnieper River. The additional troops must come from somewhere, likely a combination of new, relatively inexperienced conscripts and experienced troops probably from southern Donetsk Oblast. They likely don’t come from the front around Donetsk City, because Russian troops there are part of the Wagner Group, and are thus not under the command of the regular Russian Army.
