News From the Battlefield
Both The Latest Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine” focus on Ukrainian action in Kherson Oblast, east of the Dnieper River, and the possible Ukrainian offensive directed at Melitopol.
“Reporting From Ukraine” shows how Ukraine can now use its long-range artillery to hit Russian installations throughout the remainder of Kherson Oblast still controlled by the Russians, all the way to the entrance of the Crimean Peninsula. Now that the Kerch Bridge is out of commission, this includes the east-west rail line that Russia now relies on to supply its troops in this area. He also mentions that Ukrainians are continuing to probe for weak points in the Russian defense lines east of the Dnieper, likely preparatory to a major crossing. Ukraine is also trying to secure control of the Kinburn Peninsula that constitutes the southern border of the Dnieper Delta.
If past is prologue, as they were in Kherson west of the Dnieper, Ukraine will be patient with the decision to employ ground troops on the opposite bank. Instead, they will continue to use artillery to hit Russian installations east of the Dnieper, and coordinate with partisan groups in and around Melitopol. An exception might be an effort to suppress Russian artillery strikes on Kherson City.

Excellent article from today’s Washington Post on the escalating effects of Western sanctions on Russia’s economy.
09:11 Forbes: During the month of the war in Russia, the cost of compensation for the dead and wounded tripled, to $3.5 billion.
· If in the summer the amount of compensation paid to the dead and wounded was estimated at almost $ 1 billion monthly, then in the last month of the war it exceeds $3.5 billion.
· Several years ago, there were Russian NGOs that were doing forensic work at sites of WW-II battles. They published a report on their findings, estimating that Soviet combat deaths of serving Soviet soldiers were around 13 million, rather than the 8 million that was reported. The Russian Government shut them all down – they didn’t want to be deluged by millions of additional requests for compensation that would potentially cost Russia billions of Dollars. Look for the same thing happening because of the “special operation.”

· "The mobilized reservists most likely suffered very heavy losses after they were instructed to dig a gigantic system of trenches under shelling in the Svatove area. In the Donetsk region, many reservists died during attacks "in the forehead" on well-prepared Ukrainian defensive lines in the Bakhmut area," the review notes.
