Timothy Snyder, “The Making of Modern Ukraine”/ Lecture No. 20, “Maidan & Self-Understanding”
This lecture was delivered by Prof. Marci Shore of the Yale History Department. As someone who was in Kyiv during the entire time of Euromaidan, who has written blogs about events in Ukraine for the past 9 years, and who has interviewed many of the key participants during Euromaidan, I was hoping to hear from Prof. Shore how the events during Euromaidan formed the basis for almost everything that has taken place in Ukraine since February 22nd, 2014, the date that former President Yanukovich fled Ukraine, most significantly the organization and performance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In this regard, what Euromaidan informs us about events in Ukraine today, I found Prof. Shore’s lecture disappointing, in terms of key events that were left out, and other events where she mentioned only in passing. Without a full understanding of the events that took place during Euromaidan, in my opinion it is difficult for students in Prof. Snyder’s course to thoroughly understand the events that are taking place in Ukraine today.
With all due respect to Prof. Shore, Timothy Snyder might’ve decided to ask someone like Mychailo Wynnyckyj, a recognized expert on events during Euromaidan, and who has written extensively on the subject, to deliver Lecture No. 20.
Important points and events that were left out:
· Organization – Euromaidan had no real leaders, in the classic sense of the term. According to someone I spoke with, in the early stages of Euromaidan there was a meeting of several key people. The person I spoke with said that, considering the risk of arrest, she advised the attendees not to meet again in one place. How Euromaidan was organized, as a leaderless protest, has since been a template for the protests the Hong Kong security laws in 2020, and the current protests in Iran.
· Leadership – The protestors never recognized as protest leaders the 4 Ukrainian politicians, Yatsenyuk, Vitaliy Klitschko, Turchyniv & Tyahnybok, those who negotiated the end of Euromaidan that Prof. Shore referred to. What Prof. Shore didn’t mention in her lecture was that they arrived on Independence Square, at the same time 50,000 protestors were mourning those who had been murdered by snipers the day before. When the 4 politicians presented the deal they had agreed to with Yanukovich one protestor, Volodomyr Parasyuk, got up on stage and said that if Yanukovich isn’t gone by 10AM the next morning that the Protestors will resume fighting. Yanukovich was gone by 4AM. Prof. Shore didn’t mention Parasyuk’s act.
· Support organizations – Prof. Shore didn’t mention any of the support organizations that were established during Euromaidan. One of the most significant was “Auto-Maidan,” where protestors were using their private cars to transport wounded protestors to makeshift hospitals that Prof. Shore mentioned were set up so that protestors didn’t have to go to State hospitals, where they’d be subject to arrest. One of the members of Auto-Maidan told me about a time he decided to get his car washed, to avoid suspicion. When the owner of the car wash saw blood on the back seat, from transporting a wounded protestor, he declined payment.
· Open University – Prof. Shore mentioned the Open University of the Maidan, but only in passing. What Prof. Shore didn’t mention was that Open University continues today, providing a wide variety of courses and instruction, including supporting efforts by civil society.
· Protests were Initially A-Political – The protestors did not want any Ukrainian politician to use Euromaidan as a political platform.
· Building of the Barriers and Organization of the Volunteer Battalions – How the barriers that protected Independence Square were built and sited, and the organization of volunteer battalions that fought back Yanukovich’s Interior Ministry Police, the “Berkut,” were never mentioned in Prof. Shore’s lecture. The volunteer battalions eventually formed the basis for the rejuvenated Ukrainian Army.
· How Euromaidan Changed People’s Lives – Prof. Shore would have been well-served had she provided at least one example of how events during Euromaidan changed lives. One example is Anna Kovalenko. Before Euromaidan, Kovalenko was an art critic. During one of the planning meetings for the barriers, Kovalenko showed up with a book with pictures of barriers built by the Romans. They told her to stop wasting their time. 2 days later they called her back, and they asked her to bring her book about building barriers. After helping with the design of the barriers Kovalenko became the Head of a women’s volunteer battalion, a Fellow at the Wilson Center in Washington studying civilian control of the military, advisor to the Defense Minister and the Defense Committee of the Parliament, Member of Parliament, and Governor of Chernihiv Oblast.
· January 16, 2014 – This is the date that Parliament enacted the “Anti-Assembly Laws,” making gatherings of more than a small number of people a criminal offense, and the banning of hard hats and helmets (among many other restrictions). In response, people came with mixing bowls on their heads. The Laws were passed in Parliament with a show of hands, thus protecting MPs from having to go on the record. In the days before Jan. 16th, the protests were petering out; the Anti-Assembly Laws gave the protests new life.
When I gave a birthday party in Kyiv in 2016, I invited many of the people I has spoken with who played significant roles during Euromaidan. Most of them had never met each other.
What may have saved the Protestors from likely defeat during the night of Feb. 18 & 19, 2014, was the wind blowing smoke from the burning tires that were used in the barricades into the faces of the Berkut.
News From the Battlefield
Neither The Latest Denys nor “Reporting From Ukraine” show much significant activity. However, there could well be a news blackout.
As my collaborator points out, “We are entering an information lull which is engendering a lot of military speculation. The armchair generals are providing invaluable insights regarding whether there will be another Russian rout or whether the fronts have stabilized and its time to talk. Expositions of future events are heard from the Olympic heights of elected leaders to plebian depths of bloggers.”
“Given there is no shortage of opinion for those who want to know what is happening or will happen in the fog of war, the situation is no better or worse than faced by the Greeks when they confronted the Persian invasion. Outnumbered, lacking weapons, facing wrack and destruction the Greeks consulted the Delphic oracle hoping to understand what they should do. The oracle instructed the Greeks to pray to the winds. "They will be mighty allies of Greece."
“So, it was the Greeks, outnumbered 10 to 1, who defeated the Persians with courage and cunning with the help of the winds at Salamis.”
“Ukraine will win with cunning and courage if it keeps praying to its mighty windy allies.”
