Dave Chappelle on The War in Ukraine
America’s premier standup comedian was a recent guest on “Saturday Night Live.” Chappelle had something to say in his monologue, about the Russia’s most recent invasion of Ukraine, especially during the first 24 – 38 hours of the war where, rather than immediately surrendering to Russian troops, Frederick Kagan recently described Ukrainians killing Russians with shotguns or anything else they could find.
Comedy can be a way of expressing very serious subjects in a way to both make people laugh and getting an important point across. In this case what Chappelle was alluding to was not just the courage and resourcefulness of Ukrainians, both civilian and military, but the ignorance of the Biden Administration, and most of Ukraine’s Western Allies, of Ukraine’s willingness not only to fight, but to fight effectively over the past 270 days since the lates Russian invasion of Ukraine began. That’s 265 days more than what was given to Ukraine by most “experts” in the Biden Administration and in other Western countries, and by most of the pundits in the media. Present company excepted.
Odesa is the cradle of standup comedy. Much of America’s standup comedy tradition derives from Odesa, going back to the waves of immigration from Eastern Europe and the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. April Fool’s Day originated in Odesa, and there is a standup comedy contest held annually there. After the war is over, and Ukraine has defeated Russia, I hope Dave Chappelle might be invited to make an appearance in Odesa, perhaps even originate one of his programs from there.
News From the Battlefield
While there seems to be a lull in the South, there are rumors of Ukrainian troops crossing the Dnieper River in several places. It is possible that the Southern Command has re-employed a news blackout on continued operations in the south. The maps that appear in the Latest Denys come with a 1-day lag, to prevent the latest news from being used by Russia. The same may be true with “Reporting From Ukraine.”
As both Denys and “Reporting From Ukraine” describe, fighting in front of Donesk, in front of Bakhmut, and to the north along the border of Kharkiv and Luhansk Oblasts continues. Denys reports seeing video footage of hundreds of dead Russians lying in a field in front of Bakhmut. The Russian casualties include a large number of Chechens who are trying take a village north of Bakhmut.
I have never understood the Russian strategy of launching frontal attacks in front of Donetsk. They are attacking 3 rings of Ukrainian defensive works that Ukraine has built up since Russia’s invasion of this area in the Spring of 2014. As Denys describes, Russia has incurred hundreds of casualties to take a very small amount of territory.
