Latest Russian Missile Strike
Happened this morning throughout Ukraine. In Kyiv, at least 2 residential buildings in Kyiv were hit, at least one in the Pechersk District (Ukrainian word for “cave”), which is an upscale neighborhood located in the center of Kyiv.
Boris Johnson Wall Street Journal Op-Ed – “In the Ukraine War, Victory is the Only Option”
If anyone cannot open the link due to a paywall, I’ll be happy to send you the Pdf. Boris Johnson has his faults, but his clear-eyed view about the West needing to ensure Ukraine’s victory isn’t one of them.
The Ukrainian Government now has an instruction that all references to Russia and Putin in official government documents, be made using lower case, small ‘r” and small “p,” respectively. No more references to “Mr. Putin.”
President Zelenskyy, in his speech to the G-20 meetings in Bali, referred to the organization as the “G-19.”
The Raccoon
A raccoon has been stolen by retreating Russian troops from a zoo in Kherson. There has been the Kharkiv Cat, the Kherson Cat, and now the Raccoon. The Raccoon is now a major focus on Ukrainian social media. Here are some examples, from Twitter. I especially recommend this one, a video showing the Raccoon and several Russian “Orcs” (a derogatory term used by Ukrainians when referring to Russians), where the Raccoon calls their leader, “Scrotum Head.” The person who posted it is @Igor_from_Kyiv.
Raccoons are not common in Ukraine. Those in American who consider raccoons as a pest, for tipping over garbage cans, etc., must now consider raccoons as sacred animals.
News From the Battlefield
Apparently, Ukrainian forces have crossed the Dnieper River in 2 places, including the Kinburn Peninsula and the town of Olishki, opposite Kherson City. “Reporting From Ukraine” goes into detail about how Ukraine might develop its presence on this strategic position at the Mouth of the Dnieper River. He also mentions that Ukrainians are discovering many dead Russians floating in the Dnieper, upstream from Kherson. It may be that the Russian retreat from the Right Bank wasn’t as well organized as the Russian Defense Ministry said it was.
Reporting from Ukraine also said that Ukrainian troops are also punching through the “Wagner Line,” located in Luhansk Oblast and made up largely of anti-tank “dragon’s teeth.” From the embedded video it appears that the Russians failed to anchor the dragon’s teeth, so that they have easy for Ukraine to remove. Reporting From Ukraine theorized that this might’ve been intentional, on the part of the Russian contractors who were paid to construct the Wagner Line, allowing the contractors the opportunity to be paid multiple times.
The Latest Denys reports that the Russians may have pulled their defense lines back from the Left Bank of the Dnieper River, making it more difficult for Russia to use artillery to hit Kherson City. Denys also pointed out that Kherson City, and the Right Bank, is on higher ground than the Left Bank, making use of Russian artillery to hit Kherson even more difficult.
Denys also mentioned that Russia has ordered the withdrawal of civilians from the cities of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk, both taken by Russia in late June and early July, at great cost. If this is true, Ukraine may be able to do either or both of the following:
· Break through to the portion of Luhansk Oblast that was taken in 2014.
· Threaten the rear of the Wagner Group mercenaries who have been trying to take Bakhmut for the past several weeks.
The following is a prediction on my part, and I’m only, as Churchill liked to say, a “Former Naval Person” who can read a map:
· A possible Ukrainian airborne assault against an airfield west of Melitopol that Russia used to launch air missions against Ukrainian forces, but now appears to have largely abandoned after Ukraine has been continually hitting the airfield with long-range artillery. This would give Ukraine a foothold deep inside Russian-held territory east of Kherson, allowing Ukraine to provide improved support to partisans that have been operating to great effect in this area since the start of the war.
· An offensive south toward Melitopol, a pincer movement that would split Russian-held territory in half, eliminating the so-called “land bridge” to Crimea, and cut off Russians located around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
· Increase pressure on the Wagner Goup mercenaries operating in Donetsk Oblast.
I could well be wrong in all these predictions, but if we’ve learned anything in the last 8+ month of this war it is to never underestimate the resourcefulness of the Ukrainian armed forces and their leadership, down to the squad level.
