Oksana Baiul, Ukraine’s 1994 Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medalist
As I mentioned in an earlier email, Ukraine entered my conscience when I watched the Gold Medal performance by Oksana Baiul at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. It was only 2 ½ years after Ukraine declared its Independence.
The competition was supposed to be a grudge match between the Amercians Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, after Harding’s boyfriend “kneecapped” Nancy Kerrigan during the U.S. Championships. Instead, the young Ukrainian from Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro) stole the show. Kerrigan finished 2nd, and Tonya Harding was nowhere to be found.
Thanks to YouTube, I found Oksana Baiul’s Gold Medal performance, as covered by U.S. television, and the medal ceremony. I remember reading that Olympic officials were having trouble locating a recording of the Ukrainian National Anthem. Baiul’s victory was as unexpected in some quarters as the performance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the latest Russian invasion.
In 1995, Ukraine issued a postage stamp honoring Oksana Baiul. She is the first Ukrainian Olympic Gold Medalist in any sport.
News From the Battlefield
“Reporting From Ukraine” describes Ukrainian artillery strikes against Russian bases around Melitopol and near Crimea, and one near the Left Bank of the Dnieper that apparently killed several hundred Russian soldiers. There is also an account of a mutiny at one of the bases inside Russia where newly mobilized conscripts are being trained.
The Latest Denys also covers strikes against Russian positions near Melitopol, and the mutiny. He also describes the kidnapping of a raccoon from the Kherson Zoo. From what I have seen on social media, the Kherson raccoon will soon be the subject of a Ukrainian postage stamp.
There is a great deal of concern about continuing Russian attacks in Donbas, and the possibility of a renewed Russian offensive toward Kyiv, from Belarus. The war is not over.
