Identifying & Prosecuting the Quislings
At our meeting last Tuesday Maryan Zablotsky, MP, said that Ukraine is beginning the process of identifying and prosecuting those who were going to be part of the puppet government that Russia was planning to establish to govern Ukraine, after Russia took Kyiv in 5 days. Russia did announce that the puppet government would be headed by former President Viktor Yanukovich, who almost certainly knew of Russia’s plans to invade and occupy Crimea while he was still President of Ukraine. The targets of Ukraine’s investigations will be those who agreed to serve in the puppet government.
Timothy Snyder on “Amanpour & Company”
Amanpour’s most recent show, “Amanpour & Company,” included 2 segments: An interview with Timothy Snyder; the Producer of the recent episode of PBS “Frontline,” entitled “Putin’s War at Home.” The first part of Snyder’s interview focused mostly on the likely outcomes of the U.S. Midterm Elections, and the second part on the recent developments in Ukraine. The portion concerning the Frontline Episode included an interview with one of the dissidents who were interviewed for the episode. Both segments are well-worth watching.
Snyder recently posted a blog on Substack. The blog is entitled “Thinking About,” and it was posted a day after he appeared on “Amanpour & Company.” It is a long blog. I will copy 2 paragraphs here:
“Russia's main achievement in this war has been the kidnapping of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian women and children and dispersing them throughout the Russian Federation, with the express purpose of creating more Russians in the future. In this genocidal act, culture is reduced to biology, the violent physical control of wombs and babies. But what does it mean to be Russian, and why is it desirable? No one seems to know: except, again, in the negative sense: that there are too many non-whites in the Russian Federation. By no coincidence, it is Russia's indigenous people who are sent to fight and die in Ukraine.”
Two of the dissidents portrayed in “Putin’s War at Home,” reporters from Irkutsk in Siberia, attended the funeral of 4 Buryats who fought in the Russian Army and died in Ukraine. There is a clip in the “Frontline” piece that Amanpour replayed. The dead Buryat soldiers are Buddhists, yet they died for Russia in a war that was defined by Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate, as a “Holy War for the Russian World.”
Putin was only mentioned once by name in Snyder’s blog. It was here – “Russian culture was far more widespread and popular in Ukraine before the first invasion in 2014 and the current full-scale war of destruction. As a result of the war, Ukrainians have changed their linguistic habits, and prominent writers have ceased to write in Russian and begun to write in Ukrainian. Nothing has done as much to destroy what Putin calls "the Russian world" as his war. The Russian world is now in retreat, and as it retreats it steals and burns.”
There are many good and brave Russians who are resisting current events inside Russia, but the fact remains that it wasn’t Putin who murdered and raped innocent Ukrainians in Irpin, Bucha and many other places in Ukraine too numerous to mention, nor was it Putin who looted museums and the contents of Ukrainian houses. It was Russians. I’m not sure if Snyder, in his blog, consciously minimized the use of Putin’s name, but it echoes the sentiments of virtually all Ukrainians, but it doesn’t stop Western experts who should know better, who refer to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “Putin’s invasion,” and other deviations from the theme.
News From the Battlefield
According to the Latest Danys, the Russian Army is withdrawing from the Left Bank of the Dnieper, after leaving Kherson City located on the Right Bank. It is unclear where Russia might establish its defense lines, but the road to Crimea, coming from Kherson City, is now within range of Ukrainian artillery.
Denys now believes that the next Ukrainian offensive will be south toward Melitopol. There is too much upside for Ukraine not to consider this option, but it may come in ways that are surprising – to the Russians. Pundits who talk about the need to slow down for the Winter haven’t been to Southern Ukraine during the Winter. I was there, in mid-December. This area is relatively free of snow. There is a reason that part of Kherson Oblast is referred by Ukrainians as a “desert.” Weather-wise, there is much less to stop a Ukrainian advance than would be the case in East and Northeast Ukraine, including Luhansk, Kharkiv and Donetsk.
“Reporting From Ukraine” also predicts an offensive south, but with a caveat. He thinks that the initial objective is the Kinburn Peninsula, a spit of land shaped like a phallus, that constitutes the south bank of the Mouth of the Dnieper. Assuming that Russians are withdrawing from the Left Bank of the Dnieper River, Ukrainian control of the Kinburn Peninsula would give Ukraine complete control of nearly the entire course of the river except, critically, the area around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Times Radio – Interview with Nataliya Gumenyuk. Nataliya is a well-known Ukrainian journalist. She is a graduate of the Draper Hills Summer Program at Stanford. Nataliya’s interview includes footage showing Ukrainian soldiers repairing a captured Russian tank. There are tractor stations throughout Ukraine, where there are highly trained technicians capable of repairing sophisticated combine harvesters produced by Deere, Klaas, Agco and others. They are among the many unsung heroes in this war.
Maj. Gen. Chip Chapman, in his interview, describes Russian withdrawal from Kherson as “the break in the strategy bridge between political intent and military power.” The “political intent” is Russia’s goal of incorporating the Russian-speaking portions of Ukraine. The “military power” was stopped by a small group of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians, in a town in Mykolaiv Oblast on the Southern Bug River, where Russia’s advance toward Odesa was stopped.
Individual Initiative
There will be many books written about this war. One of them should be about the outsize roles played by individuals and small groups of Ukrainians, both military and civilian, in stopping Russian advances. Some examples:
· Mayor of Irpin. He and his comrades likely stopped a Russian advance into Kyiv, into a neighborhood where we live when we’re in Kyiv.
· Any number of examples that, collectively, contributed to Ukraine’s victory in the Battle of Kyiv.
· Mechanics, mentioned earlier, technicians now repairing the electrical grid, and first responders.
· Electrical and computer technicians who modified commercial drones to conduct reconnaissance and attacks.
Individual initiative is what is lacking in the Russian Army or, it appears, in Russian Society. The above example reminds me of the initiative taken by a small group of non-commissioned officers on June 6, 1944, who were responsible for getting the U.S. Army off of Omaha Beach and turned around what might well have been a disaster.
I tried to write a similar book, about the individual initiative that ended in Yanukovich fleeing Kyiv at the end of Euromaidan. I did a lot of interviews with individuals and small groups, including this one with the Lv’iv Entrepreneurs Group (that’s me on the right) that was instrumental in providing material, financial and personnel support for the protests on Independence Square, and I was inspired by everything I learned. Sadly, I couldn’t find an agent so, for it’s worth, I’ll pass along my idea.
